Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

Towards the tail end of 2020, we saw a tweet calling out sexist quotes from both Gary Gygax, one of the co-founders of D&D, and Johnathan Tweet, the lead designer of D&D's 3.5 edition. We screamed at each other for a few hours before asking ourselves questions like: "Wait... *why* did they say these things?" and "Did this have any affect on the games?" We realized not many people were having these kinds of conversations online, so we figured, why not start one ourselves?

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

We hope our listeners get a better understanding of not only the history of D&D as a whole but also the real-world problems that shaped many of the game's problematic elements. D&D is a fascinating case study in social mores, the influence of life on art, and the inherent problems facing society from the 1970s until present day. As we say many times in our show: The sexism, racism, and other problematic elements in D&D aren't just D&D problems. They're real-world problems.

Which episode should someone start with?

What are you interested in learning more about?! The harlot table? Dragon Magazine? The nature god patriarchy? Pick a topic that sounds interesting to you and start from there. If you're still a bit lost, an audience favorite is our two-part deep dive on the drow matriarchy.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

Shardae's favorite episode is definitely Dungeons & Distaff Gamers. It's all about one of the most notoriously sexist Dragon Magazine articles of all time. Did you know it was written a few years after the original Roe v. Wade decision?! WHAT THE HECK?!?! Lyssa's favorite episode is Women Are Monsters. Researching feminine-presenting monsters opened our eyes to how women's personalities and bodies are represented in folklore. Once your see the Monstrous Feminine, you can't unsee it.

Which episode are you most proud of?

We're both very proud of Which Witch is Witch, which was our first ever character-specific deep dive. We traced the origins of Iggwilv all the way from OD&D all the way to 5th edition. Plus, it features the greatest love story in the Forgotten Realms. 😉

What is your vision for your show?

We hope our show can serve as an educational experience for not only our audience but also ourselves. A lot of people are guilty of perpetuating harmful stereotypes at one point in their lives -- but there is always time to grow and do better. By learning from the mistakes of the past and figuring out where they all stem from, we can work towards a better and brighter future in the TTRPG space.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

We absolutely adore the Three Black Halflings! Liv, Jasper, and Jeremy are some of the loveliest people in the TTRPG space and their insight is always on point.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

We stole it from the infamous AD&D harlot table! We wanted to take something sexist and reclaim it for our own empowerment 💗
