01/10/23 • 49 min

The SHIFT Show

PreHab is a super important, but super confusing, topic for many people in gymnastics.
With so much information out there online, it can be really hard to know what exercises to do, how many of them to do, and when to do them.
In this episode, Dave Tilley breaks down

  • What PreHab is, and what it isn't
  • "Must know' concepts for gymnastics coaches, parents, and athletes when doing PreHab
  • How flexibility, strength, balance, and gymnastics specific exercises can help
  • How to approach PreHab for different joints like the ankle, knee, hip, lower back, shoulder, and elbow/wrist

Brett Nelligan of Maryland Gymnastics Discusses High Performing Cultures, Team Dynamics, and the 2022 Season

Today on the podcast we are continuing with our exciting NCAA interviews with Brett Nelligan from the University of Maryland Gymnastics.

Brett is about to enter his fourteenth season as head coach of the Terrapins, he is the fourth head coach of the Maryland gymnastics team taking over the role from his father, Bob Nelligan.

The Maryland coaching team of Brett, Aaron, and JJ are doing a fantastic job with some record-breaking seasons in the last few years and are on an awesome upward trajectory.

After spending some time with Brett and the team at Maryland, I wanted to have him on the podcast to pick his brain on what is important to him to make progress from a performance objective scoring point of view, but also from a health, happiness, and longevity point of view.

It's challenging to have multiple kinds of success and upward momentum year after year, so to see someone who can do that really well, and is a great human I had to have him on to share his knowledge.

We discuss:

What is the recipe for success for a successful season?

How to build a College structure at club.

Advice for those who don’t have access to a strength coach.

Do your athlete have the freedom to make mistakes and feel supported no matter what?

Fear is a motivator, but only short term.

Culture is the 5th event.

Brett's secrets tips for improving bars.

And...

The number thing the most successful elite and college programs are doing to be the best of the best.

We appreciate you listening!

A Discussion on Training Hours in Young Gymnasts, Lifting Weights, and Culture Change Progress

This week's podcast I was asked to go on Brett Scott's podcast who owns and runs Barbell Therapy and Performance which specializes in rehabbing and coaching athletes to perform at their highest abilities.

They offer physical therapy and recovery services, personal training, and performance coaching for barbel athletes and gymnasts.

We have a great conversation about positive changes that have happened in gymnastics, but also things that coaches, gymnasts, and medical providers are still struggling with.

Such as how many hours should young gymnasts train, gymnasts lifting weights, injuries, and in particular back injuries.

We discuss:

How much training is too much training?

Should gymnasts, especially in the pubescent/adolescent stage be training gymnastics year-round? Or should they be focusing on being a multi-sport athlete?

What is overtraining?

Where do you start with someone who’s not hit puberty, not got their menstrual cycle, and has a stress fracture/ type of pain or injury?

How many calories do gymnasts burn?

How many times a week should someone be doing a legitimate strength and conditioning type program for gymnastics? And what should that include?

And...

Should every gymnast be stretching?

We appreciate you listening!
