In this massive episode, I sit down with Jessica O'Beirne of the GymCastic podcast to cover a huge range of topics. We went back and forth on questions we had for each other for an hour and a half. We talk about everything from my personal change of trying to get rid of my ego during coaching, the problems with early recruiting in gymnastics, proper hip flexibility methods to prevent labral/hamstring injuries, why Jessica started her podcast, proper landing techniques, workload science in gymnastics, proper landing form, how to create culture change in gymnastics, how to save mens gymnastics, and much more. So much good stuff in this one!
We appreciate you listening!

I want to use the podcast as a way to give people involved in gymnastics a positive example to follow, with people who are doing a great job and attacking these grey areas and harder conversations.
This week I am grateful and honoured to be joined by former NNCA athlete and now Ascend Gymnastics Coach Cale Robinson.
We discuss the IMPORTANCE of basics.
And HOW you get parents and gymnasts to buy into your beliefs.
Beyond a handstand the one skill you YOU NEED TO DO perfectly.
WHY knowing how to handle adversity will aid your path for perfection.
HOW to teach the athlete to fall in love with the sport and be SUCCESSFUL on their own.
ALSO...
A must hear talk on FEAR.

Knee Injuries in Gymnastics - A Complete Guide
The SHIFT Show
02/15/22 • 137 min
In gymnasts, the knee joint has the highest rate of "severe" injuries. Unfortunately, this refers to injuries tending to cause the most tissue damage and pain when they occur. Alongside this, knee injuries also tend to create the most missed time from training and competition. Lastly, as long-term studies have suggested, there is a concerning trend for athletes who suffer injuries like ACL tears having long-term issues related to knee injuries they experienced when younger.
Due to these concerning concepts in research studies, and the unfortunate reality that 1000s of gymnasts still struggle with knee injuries each competitive season, we must take more dedicated actions to help. In an ongoing effort to provide high-quality, science-based education to the gymnastics community, I have started this "mega-blog" series.
My hope is that by laying out the current science as we know it, and describing it in a way that is accessible to everyone in the gymnastics community, we can all work together to make a positive impact on reducing the rates of knee injuries in gymnastics.

Today on the podcast I’m very excited to share another thought-provoking and important conversation about cultural change, morals, and ethics of coaching with Tom Elder. With 13 years of experience coaching, he also has an extensive education in Philosophy with his research focused on child autonomy in abuse in youth sports, which is obviously a very important topic that we're dealing with right now in gymnastics. Once again he had my brain turning talking about gymnastics culture, the things that we have grown to accept in our sport, philosophies, coaching techniques. We explored the negative impact these can have on athletes if we allow some of these things to continue.
This might be a tough episode to listen to if you're someone who's going through this yourself, or has a history with someone who maybe has, unfortunately, experienced harmful behaviors.
“I hope that if I could achieve one thing from this podcast, I can get one person who's struggling with this, to feel like and realize they're not alone. And they have the whole backing of the community. We're all supporting them. But there's going to be some tough roads for people to go down if the sports really going to get better. And we need brave and courageous people who are willing to lead the way and are willing to take that for themselves so that the community itself gets a little bit stronger.” Tom Elder

Gymnastics Ankle Injuries - A Complete Guide
The SHIFT Show
01/25/22 • 118 min
Ankle and foot injuries are one of the most common problems gymnasts face. Depending on the study you read, up to 50% of all lower-body injuries in gymnastics occur at the ankle and foot. When you look at the sport, it makes sense. It is full of high impact forces, high repetitions, young athletes going through puberty, and has many cultural issues that might make it challenging to keep the ankle and foot joints healthy.
In an effort to help provide high-quality information to the gymnastics community, I wanted to create this podcast and "mega-blog" for people to use as a reference. I provide all of my thoughts on common ankle and foot injuries and how to manage the stages of different injuries. I also share how to safely progress back to gymnastics after an injury, and how to reduce the risk of ankle and foot injuries in our sport. I have spent hundreds of hours reviewing the literature on this topic in an effort to make this blog very high quality.

Today on the podcast, is a lecture that I gave to all of the College Gymnastics Coaches last year when our research paper on Achilles studies, Achilles tears, and NCAA gymnastics was being published.
I wasn't able to share this as a podcast because we had not yet published our paper, but now that it's out, and many people have read it and have talked about it, I can share this lecture.
Obviously, there is a huge issue with Achilles tears in NCAA gymnastics and this is a problem that has been going on for the last four to five seasons.
Before COVID in 2018, there were about 20 Achilles tears in the first couple of months of the season, which was absolutely devastating to watch.
This lecture gives an outline of my ideas, shares conversations with world experts on Achilles' tendons, and summarizes and presents the research in a way for people to think about them.
As well as provide some options for what we can do, both before and during College Gymnastics to possibly start reducing the risk of tears happening.
I DISCUSS; The elephant in the room.
What are the possible risk factors?
Why you can't rupture a tendon if you don't have pathology.
NCAA Achilles Paper finding.
What can be done Pre and during NCAA to help reduce Achilles injuries.
And...
Confusing questions answered.

Our Competitive Gymnasts Share Their Experience with Culture Change and New Coaching Styles
The SHIFT Show
07/13/21 • 98 min
This week on the podcast is a very special episode with crowd favorite Eva our gym director but also three of our former gymnasts who trained whilst we went through a massive cultural change at our gym. On the podcast I've talked a lot about the changes we made in our gym, me realizing my ego, having honest conversations with the athletes, how we handled some of the harder issues like motivation, burnout. But I thought it would be a really cool idea to actually talk with some of our former gymnasts live on the podcast and get their experience and interpretation of what happened, and what they noticed from a gymnast's point of view. I know a lot of people are struggling with trying to improve their culture, but still, maintain progress and have high performance. It can be done and I hope you can take away something from our experience.
We DISCUSS; how to have better one on one conversations and not be afraid to talk about real issues.
WHY change has to start at the top.
REALISING whether you’re a coach or gymnast, every moment you're in the gym, there are kids looking up to you.
The DIFFERENT ways to modify practices and still make them beneficial for gymnasts.
If you want a better culture MAKE SURE you're seeing the humans behind the gymnast.
ALSO...
DOING the harder thing when it's the right thing to do.

Today in the podcast, I am excited to have senior British artistic gymnast Ellie Downie.
Ellie from Notts Gymnastics Club has won multiple international medals and titles and is the All-around 2017 European gymnastics champion, the first British gymnast to win a major all-around title.
I love talking to athletes about their experiences in gymnastics, trying to learn from them, and pulling out some value for parents, coaches, or gymnasts that are still active in the sport.
There's so much that we can learn from people like Ellie, who have had a long, successful career, and also I think it's important to not only highlight what got them to where they are but also, what would they do differently?
What would they like to see, change in the sport right now?
Ellie gives a lot of practical advice about what she has done, I really enjoyed this conversation and can't thank her enough.
We discuss:
Ellie Downie’s key to recovery.
Advice to coaches who are trying to achieve longevity in their athletes.
Ellie’s thought on giving gymnasts take a break from competitions or training during puberty.
Injuries, anxiety, and stress; what Ellie has learned to cope with these.
Why Ellie doesn’t use Twitter anymore.
The important role of Ellie’s mom in her life and gymnastics career.
And...
How Ellie’s training has involved over the years and the use of weight training.
We appreciate you listening!

Today is episode 150 of The Shift Show! A big thank you to all the listeners for your continued support. Who better to have on our 150 episode than my good friend, Nick Ruddock a high-performance consultant who has worked with over 22 nations around the world from club level all the way up to the Olympic level. In the gymnastics community right now there is a lot of people who are frustrated with the technical aspect of gymnastics and they feel as though the athletes they work with aren't making progress, that things aren't really working. Nick has been grateful enough to come on and share what he has learned from his experience working with high-performing clubs. Which he has broken down into 8 essential tips that any level coach across the world can use to get better technical performance of your gymnasts, making sure that you’re getting the most out of each practice and making progress.
We DISCUSS; How to increase the intensity of training and the work ethic of the athletes and coaches.
The importance of not rushing to fulfill gymnasts' long-term potential.
Why you should prioritize the simple things.
Those that learn the most, do the most in gymnastics.
Nick’s brand new must-have Gymnastics App!
Nick has just launched a ridiculously amazing, new Gymnastics Growth App with everything you could possibly need in one place, including an exercise library with floor drills, bar drills, and line drills.
