The SHAIR Recovery Podcast - SP 280: Meredith Atwood - The Year of No Nonsense
play

07/14/20 • 78 min

With no higher power or 12-step work, Meredith Atwood white-knuckled sobriety. After substance abuse, suicide attempts, and binge eating issues, she had realization that she would be dead within a year, and made the decision to stop drinking cold turkey. Growing up in a religious cult, Meredith couldn’t subscribe to the thought of surrendering. After compensating for her behavior with triathlons and Ironman competitions, she came to the point where she had to sit with herself and begin to truly heal.

As a former attorney, Meredith Atwood is a podcaster, speaker, and author of The Year of No Nonsense, and Host of “The Same 24 Hours” podcast. She’s been featured in The Boston Globe, The New York Post, the Seattle Times, and recovery advocate and contributing writer for Psychology Today.

Holding onto the belief that we all have our own personal brands of “no nonsense,” in this inspiring conversation, Meredith takes us through the exploration of getting out of the way of our own personal happiness.

“Many of us don’t know how to process uncomfortable feelings and we want to run. Sitting with yourself is terrifying and the hardest thing I've had to do. I’m alive, I made it another day, and it’s really one day at a time.”

Keith Campbell joins us on the SHAIR Podcast today. Keith has a thriving Facebook Group called Sober and Serious with over 3,700 active members. This is a group for people who are Serious about their recovery and striving to be a better people every day! Omar: Let's talk a little bit about what your daily routine looks like and include your recovery routine. Keith: I usually wake in the morning and I do a little meditation and prayer, and then take a shower, get ready, go to work. Usually when I get home from work, then I head off to a meeting usually if I have time. After that, usually some fellowship with the people in the meeting, and life is good. Try to help people. I got some guys that I sponsor, and when they're willing, I'll meet up with them and take then through the book too. Omar: Now, you say pray and meditate in the mornings, so how do you maintain your spiritual condition your conscious contact with a higher power on a regular basis, either daily basis or weekly basis? Keith: I do a lot of praying mostly for other people, but the Serenity Prayer I use. I go to church. I thank God a lot of the times for everything in my day-to-day routine and everything he's gotten me through, and I just continue to try to grow in my faith. Those 2 things I try to do, is grow in my faith and grow as a person in my recovery. Omar: How much clean time do you have and when is your anniversary date? Keith: I've been clean since March 5th of 2015, so I have over 16 Omar: Tell us, Keith, how old you were the first time you drank or used drugs or more importantly how did they make you feel? Keith: I was pretty young, 12 or 14, when I first drank. I don't know, made me feel, I guess, happy. Omar: What was keeping you from getting clean or staying clean when you first got introduced to recovery? Keith: When I first got introduced to recovery I just wasn't following the suggestions in the program. I thought I could do it on my own. That's what kept me from staying clean before. I didn't go to meetings except for when, to get my sheet signed for court, but when I started going to these meetings for myself, that's when it all changed. I was there with an open mind to grow and learn, do whatever it takes, and if that means following these people's suggestions, then that's what I was going to do. That's helped me tremendously.

Yovana “Rawvana” Mendoza joins us today on The SHAIR Podcast. You will recognize her more easily as the YouTube and Instagram sensation, Rawvana. With over 400,000 Instagram followers and over 150,000 YouTube fans, Rawvana has taken the raw food lifestyle to the next level. A little about Rawvana “After years of feeling toxic, anxious, depressed, and without passion, I found raw foods in January of 2013. I decided I needed a "detox" so I went to a place specialized in detoxifying the body. I was there for two weeks, eating raw foods, juicing, and learning about this new way of eating, I was amazed! After two weeks of being there, I felt like a new person, with energy, enthusiasm, clarity, emotional stability, and heightened consciousness. It was there where I kneeled before God, asked Him for forgiveness and strength, so I would never go back to my previous lifestyle. With the strength of my family, friends, and faith, I’ve never looked back and to this day I no longer drink, smoke, eat any processed or cooked foods, and completely stay away from any animal products. Since then, I have made it my objective to spread the message of health using all avenues possible using my bilingual influence, Spanish and English. I have taken various courses on raw foods, such as the Science of Raw Food Nutrition with Drs. Rick and Karin Dina at Living Light Institute. In summer of 2014, I graduated as a Certified Health Coach from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I am also undergoing the Certified Lifestyle Coaching program with the author of The 80/10/10 Diet, Dr. Douglas Graham. I am currently active in most social media outlets, local news television, and regional television in Mexico. I hope you will find my website and social media content resourceful on your road to health, happiness, and vitality.” With Love, Yovana “Rawvana” Mendoza www.rawvana.com

The SHAIR Recovery Podcast - SP 288: Don Cummins - The Prison Within and Breaking Free
play

11/03/20 • 77 min

In 2011, Don Cummins was homeless, desperate to get high, and had already served 20 years in prison for bank robberies. Not only suffering from mental health issues, addiction, and incarceration, the court had also declared him insane. Willing to do anything to escape from reality, he went to any lengths to not feel discomfort from the trauma he experienced and abuse he suffered.

From the age of 10 Don started to get high, and by the age of 13 was committed to a program, never to live at home again. The rest of his teenage years were spent in youth homes, juvenile detention centers, and at the age of 16, Don was sentenced to prison as an adult.

As the years went on, the drugs only got harder, and the prison sentenced only got longer. Reaching a bottom, Don faced the choice to attempt suicide or reach out for help. Facing an awakening while sitting in his prison cell at the age of 23, he realized the pattern of his denial state and the inability to see the truth. Years later at the age of 39, Don decided to begin working through resentment, anger, fear, and reached out for help and began putting in the work.

From being isolated and alone, Don began experiencing deep friendships and connections. From not knowing how to be loved, he ended up meeting the love of his life, and from being jobless, he went back to school and became a software developer that integrates with banks.

With an incredible self-transformation, Don’s story is a testament to overcoming adversity, overcoming obstacles, and finding freedom. Today, Don Cummins is an author and speaker whose passion is to spread the message that regardless of anyone’s background or life situation, absolutely anyone can overcome their obstacles and have the life they dream of.

Don lives in Florida with his wife Brianna and his two boys Levi and Finley. While he’s not hanging out with his family or working on a project, he’s riding his bike and playing guitar.

After fleeing from an abusive marriage, Rebecca Davison found herself using alcohol as a way to cope with her PTSD. She explains, “if I had a bad day, I would have an extra drink, I was very much a gray area drinker, but I didn’t like being drunk, it made me scared and anxious.”

Because of her support system and healthy childhood, Rebecca rationalized her drinking. She hadn’t hit that “rock bottom.” She hadn’t reached the depths of what she perceived an alcoholic “should.” It wasn’t until she had a psychotic episode with a boyfriend where she finally came to the understanding that drinking and PTSD was dictating her life.

Through studying and research, Rebecca came to find Yoga Nidra and Essential Oils as her saving grace. In the practice of Yoga Nidra, it helps soothe the vagus nerve, which is essentially our flight or freeze response that may have been altered or skewed due to the trauma we’ve experienced. Additionally reducing emotional reactivity and increasing self-regulation, the benefits of Yoga Nidra and essential oils are deeply healing on a cellular and emotional level.

Once Rebecca came to understand the healing benefits of these properties, the more she separated herself from her PTSD, where she began helping others heal from their own trauma.

“Taking care of yourself and choosing to thrive is a revolutionary act despite all of the oppression and suffering in the world.”

Rebecca Davidson is an artist and yoga and meditation practitioner and teacher with over 20 years of experience as a student and eight as a teacher. She specializes in yoga nidra, restorative, tantra, and other spiritually-based practices such as mantra, pranayama, and meditation.

Rebecca is also a doTERRA Wellness Advocate, an intuitive tarot and oracle reader, and is currently pursuing her MFA in Painting at the Savannah College of Art & Design. When she is not practicing, teaching, making art, or helping others transform/heal, Rebecca is probably drinking black coffee and listening to music or a podcast. She is a tree-hugging, crystal-collecting, essential oil wearing, animal loving, sober vegan.
