Burden of the New Role

The path to project management for many is acquired as you rise through the ranks and gain experience on projects as an individual contributor. As you become a project manager, you have to learn to accept the “burden of the new role”. You learn new terminology, along with accepting the role of a leader. It is important to lead including being willing to provide solutions to management and often making tough decisions. As you accept the burden of the new role, you will increase your skills as a leader.

Leadership Requires Courage

Often you have to make difficult decisions, and some might not necessarily be accepted by all. At times, leadership requires you to provide direction to your team which might not be popular. A true leader learns that they need to be willing to make those tough decisions or be strong with their team when necessary. Be courageous as a leader.

Honesty, Dependability and Trust

It is important that you build trust with both your team and those to which you report. As you are honest and dependable in your deliveries, you will build trust with those with which you associate with.

Leadership and Project Management

What is it that makes a project manager a leader? First a leader needs to be a good manager, meaning that he needs to be able to properly manage those things he has responsibility for such as budget, people and other resources. Leadership requires you to have a good vision of the goal and the ability to develop the strategies to fulfil that vision.

SPM 022 | 7 Ways a Good Project Team is like a Good Marriage

On February 5, 2015, my wife and I celebrated 30 years of marriage. First of all I want to say to my wife Monica, thank you for 30 great years. I love you and look forward to spending forever with you!

As I reflect on my marriage with my beautiful bride, it occurs to me that like a marriage, a project team requires work and ongoing care. During this episode, I share seven ways a good project team is like a good marriage.

Listen to the Podcast During the podcast

  1. Unified Goals
  2. To keep a marriage strong, both husband and wife must have goals that are congruent. This doesn’t mean that they will always agree with each other, rather they will shape their individual goals into unified goals. Their goals must be aligned.

Likewise project teams must be united in their goals. If properly initiated, a project will have a Project Charter or similar document which will include the vision of the project and goals which align with that vision. When the project team understands the projects vision and goals, they can rally around those goals and be unified in their delivery of the project. The importance of a unified vision and goals are highlighted by this statement.

If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea. ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery
  3. Good Communications
  4. In a good marriage communication is king & queen. Our family consists of eight children and two parents. When we fail to communicate with each other, things become chaotic and the Phillipy kingdom does not run well. It doesn’t take long before the subjects (children) begin to rule the kingdom. It is critical for spouses to really listen to each other to understand what is being communicated.

It is just as critical for a project team to learn to communicate well with each other and to the stakeholders of their project. When collaboration between team members occurs, the project runs better and deliverables are met. Project Managers should work to establish a project environment which fosters open communication and a high level of collaboration. The following quote comes to mind.

When the trust account is high, communication is easy, instant, and effective. ~ Stephen R. Covey
  5. Patience & Understanding
  6. Even in good marriages there are bound to be disagreements and conflicts. Because misunderstandings between two people are imminent, both husband and wife need to be patient with each other and work toward better understanding each other.

Project teams will also experience conflict. Each team member should always be aware of the other members of the team and sincerely work to understand their point of view. The following quote is a little flippant, however very appropriate.

...treat people with understanding when you can, and fake it when you can’t until you do understand. ~ Kim Harrison
Patience is also an important quality a team member should strive for. We are all at different levels of skill, experience, and abilities. Be patient with each other as the team works to deliver the project. This quality especially needs to kick in when things don’t quite go right. This quote highlights the fact that patience is a virtue. The secret code of success is patience, a virtue that cannot be replaced. It takes time to build great dreams. ~ Bernard Kelvin Clive ...and I might add...it takes time to build “great teams”.
  7. Teamwork
  8. I am convinced that there isn’t a more important team on earth than the team of husband and wife. A good marriage requires strong teamwork between spouses. As a couple learns to work together, they will grow together.

Similarly, project teams need to be able to work together to meet the deliverables of the project. Great teams have learned that the team is greater than the summation of the individual parts. Each person on the team should understand their roles and responsibilities and work to support the team to the best of their ability and help others in need. This statement highlights the importance of teamwork.

The ability of a group of people to do remarkable things hinges on how well those people pull together as a team. ~ Simon Sinek
  9. Leverage Each Other’s Strengths
  10. Over the past 30 years I have learned that my wife has some great strengths that help counterbalance my weaknesses. For instance, there is nothing like a mothers intuition. In a good marriage the couple will identify their strengths and weaknesses and successfully leverage each other’s strengths and buoy up each other’s weaknesses.

Great teams learn to work together to bring out the strengths of each other. Each project member has their own set of unique skills. As those skills become apparent, the team will either consciously or unconsciously begin leveraging each other’s str...

SPM 024 | Meet Aspiring Project Manager Jared Coffin

This is the first in what is anticipated will be a long running series where the Sensible Project Manager mentors an aspiring project manager. Today you will meet Jared Coffin, who we will get to know during the coming months as he shares his journey into project management.

During the Podcast

Meeting Jared Coffin

Today Jared is a web developer who has a degree in Aeronautic Management Technology from Arizona State University. With experience as a developer, pilot and fight trainer, he has decided that he wants to become a project manager. During the episode I explore Jared’s goals and uncover his level of knowledge about project management.

Becoming a Project Manager

In 2013 PMI published a report Industry Growth Forecast, which projects that 15.7 million project management roles will be added worldwide between 2010 & 2020. Additionally, salaries for project managers will increase in the same time period. Clearly there is a great demand for more project managers. If you are not a project manager today, I encourage you to consider this as a great career choice.

Being a Mentor

For those of you who are experienced project managers I encourage you to find an aspiring project manager and offer to mentor them as they enter the project management field. Many of you had mentors to help guide you as you became a project manager. Now is the time for you to step up and give back to the disciple.

The Aspiring Project Manager Series

The goal of this mentoring series is threefold:

  • Help Jared Coffin become a project manager and guide him through his first role as a PM.
  • Provide guidance for aspiring project managers as they break into the project management discipline.
  • Encourage seasoned project managers to establish a mentorship relationship with an aspiring project manager by providing a framework for that mentorship.

I don’t know how long this series will last, but I expect it to be several months or even a year or more, and I am committed to fulfilling these three goals during the series.
