Always a great time with Coach Dave over at Providence Barbell club. In this podcast we talk disc golf, music and of course, we take a a deep dive into the sport of Olympic Weightlifting, training and recovery. Dave is a coach & weightlifter at PBC, BA & MA English, teacher, with a USAW L2 cert.
Bio:
David Ethier grew up a multisport athlete, eventually settling into wrestling for his collegiate career. He later coached at the high school level while earning his postgrad degree. He began weightlifting in 2010 under coach Sauro Gardenal at the Bethnal Green Weightlifting Club in London, England. After three years, David moved to Providence, RI, and began coaching as well as competing. He has been the head coach of the Providence Barbell Club since 2016. He is a transplant from Tennessee and has been in love with The Ocean State since his first day here.
Recent National level comps
- Masters Nationals 2022- 2nd place
- Masters World’s- 2021- 2nd place
- 3x Masters Nationals Champion (best overall 35-39 male, 2021), 2x Masters Nationals Runner Up
- Masters World Championships: Bronze in 2018, 2019, Silver in 2021, Pan-American Silver 2021
- AO Finals each year since 2016, top 10 finishes, Sr. Nationals qualified ‘18-’21 but only went in 2019.
Records
- Masters nationals 2021- gold snatch, gold C+J, gold Total, and set American record in C+J & total
- Broken Masters snatch record 3x, C+J record 4x, and Total record 4x
- Best C+J: 176 (387.2)- March 21st 2021 (Masters nationals)
- Best comp snatch: 141 (310.2)- March 7th 2021 (AO 1)
- Any big lifts recently?
- Returning from hiatus; lots of beltless squats 141, 176, 182 (400 lbs)

Bio: Sensei Brett started martial arts at the age of 17, and has obtained Black Belts in Judo, Karate, and his Brown Belt in Jiujitsu. His knowledge of martial arts has provided him with many different learning aspects of techniques and teaching styles. He now focuses on coaching both youth and adult students. Brett holds a National Coach Certification from USA Judo, and has a Master’s Degree in Global Management from Saybrook University.
