In today's episode I am chatting with Dr. David McMillan, a clinical researcher from the Miami a Project to cure paralysis. His area of focus is fitness and nutrition and metabolic science for those with a spinal cord injury.
With thanksgiving right around the corner we talk about avoiding major weight gain around the holidays.
Ramp it up!
In 2010 David was serendipitously involved in a community research project involving exercise and people with SCI. This experience set David on a trajectory, and he is now a clinical researcher using metabolic science to learn about SCI and identify low-tech / low-cost strategies for targeting obesity in people with SCI. His doctoral dissertation sought to understand if SCI changes the way that the body transports and stores the fat from a meal. Outside the laboratory David is an avid purveyor of adaptive outdoor recreation, including being a seasoned adaptive scuba dive buddy. His love of inclusivity and nature has also led him to advocacy pertaining to the disproportionate effect that climate change has on people with disability.

On this episode of The Ramp. It. Up! Podcast we are celebrating September, SCI Awareness Month, by speaking with Alfredo Iglesias, President and Co-founder of iAm Able Fitness.
Ramp. It. Up!
Meet the founders

Alfredo Iglesias – Alfredo has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. He developed product prototypes for Lutron Electronics. With over ten years of experience in the computer industry, he developed many skills from technical to business. But life took him in another direction sustaining a spinal cord injury. After realizing the need for help his friends and peers faced, he created iAm ABLE Fitness. With this mission he has been focused on improving the quality of life for his peers in the paralysis community.

Michelle Iglesias – Michelle has a Bachelor of Health Services Administration. She has over twelve years of experience administrating health offices. During her experience she managed private practices for general practitioners, women’s health, and geriatrics. She developed an understanding of the health care system. She is also a full-time caregiver to her husband with a spinal cord injury. Together they founded iAM ABLE Fitness to help others through the challenges of spinal cord injury. Her understanding, empathy, and experience helped her to successfully drive this mission.

In 2008, our founder Alfredo Iglesias was injured on his honeymoon after a swim gone wrong. He sustained a paralyzing injury dramatically changing his life. The transition was difficult, but throughout that time he learned of needs and challenges faced by the community. With this firsthand knowledge, he set out to build a socially driven organization to meet this population’s need.

Since establishing in 2012, iAM ABLE has provided mentorship and training to over 120 participants through more than 10,000 hours of direct service. Our programming has directly resulted in both positive mental and physical effects in the participant’s lives including regaining independence, furthering their education, returning to work, and boosting daily health. The founders of iAM ABLE understand the need for mentoring and activity-based therapy.

Dr. Katie Gant received her BS and MS degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Tulane University. She received her PhD from The University of Miami in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Gant’s research experiences span from basic science, to translational experiments, and now clinical trials.

Her interest in spinal cord injury started in the neuromuscular physiology laboratory at The Miami Project, where her studies focused on understanding the properties of paralyzed muscles. This led her to explore techniques for driving paralyzed muscles via natural control signals from the brain. Her dissertation research developed a system that monitored event related desynchronization in the motor cortex of people with cervical-level spinal cord injuries via electroencephalographic recordings. Real-time decoding led to stimulation of upper-extremity muscles to enable hand movements. This work contributed to the development of a closed-loop brain-machine interface utilizing subdural electrodes.

As Director of Education and Outreach at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, Dr. Gant serves as the Scientific Liason for our research center, promoting interactions between the spinal cord injury community, researchers, and clinicians. She is responsible for informing the public, community partners, and patient groups about spinal cord injury research and resources. Her team oversees the research participant database and intake process for The Miami Project, with aids in the recruitment for our clinical research programs.

Many great Americans of African descent have helped build this nation into the superpower and others today continue to contribute to its greatness. Among their number, there have been many who never let physical or mental challenges debilitate them. Health care, the arts, media and civil advocacy are just some of the areas of their contributions.
Today I am speaking with long time media personality and fellow quad, Paul Amadeus Lane. Tune in to hear his story of success despite experiencing discrimination due to his race and his injury.
