I consider it my job to remove the stigma of healthful animal foods, to highlight the importance and vitality of meat in the human diet. But that doesn’t mean it’s a free for all. There are upper limits on meat intake, just as there are upper limits on everything.

Elle Russ chats with Tyler Cartwright - 15 years ago, Tyler was nearly dead. He weighed a quarter of a ton, he was falling asleep while driving, while talking, and while working. He was eating 12,000 Calories per day chasing blood glucose spikes and crashes just to stay awake. His A1c was in excess of 13, and he was nearer to death each day. A series of events over time and his own desire to improve brought him face-to-face with the gravity of this situation and he began to fight for his well-being for the first time in nearly two decades. He shed 300 pounds of excess body weight and has maintained the loss for over three years. His A1c, BG, and all markers of metabolic health have returned.

Tyler now coaches and teaches others how to do so, both through his cofounding of Ketogains with Luis Villaseñor, and through his recently published book, Kintsukuroi: Rebuilding Hope & Embracing Change. His work and his coaching have helped thousands of people to succeed and inspired countless others to pursue their goals. He is an international public speaker, loves a great conversation, and enjoys reading on various topics (with a library well over 2500 books). His wife, Jamie, and their daughter live at home outside of Nashville, TN with their dog Dixie.

Host Brad Kearns discusses what could be the fitness breakthrough of the century: Micro-workouts! These are brief bursts of explosive effort that you can sprinkle into your daily routine. Examples include a set of deep squats right there at your work desk, a single set of pull-ups as you pass under the closet door, a sprint up two flights of stairs in the office building, pulling Stretch Cordz or TRX bands for a couple of quick sets, and so on. The benefits of micro-workouts are numerous. First, they are accessible to anyone no matter how busy your daily routine is. Second, the cumulative fitness benefits over time are phenomenal - you launch your formal workouts from a much high platform. Third, these workouts are brief enough that you don't risk the common problem of overly stressful workout patterns that lead to breakdown, burnout, illness, and injury. Perhaps most beneficial is how these little forays help break up prolonged periods of stillness that are so common in modern life and have now been identified as a huge health hazard. A minute or two of effort gets the blood and oxygen circulating throughout the body to enhance fat burning and cognitive function when you return to your screen. Perhaps the best way to get started with micro-workouts is to design a brief sequence of movements to execute first thing in the morning? Watch Brad's YouTube video, "Dynamic Stretching Routine To Start Your Day" for some ideas. Create a sequence that's simple and brief enough that you can commit to it every single day and mold it into a habit.

Host Brad Kearns welcomes former pro soccer player turned extreme endurance athlete turned mental training coach Luke Tyburski to talk about his remarkable journey in pursuit of the limits of human endurance performance and the profound ups and downs and life-altering lessons Luke has experienced along the way.

After playing soccer at a high level in Australia and the USA, Luke plunged headlong into ultraendurance, with his first-ever running race the epic Marathon des Sables--a legendary six-day slog through the sandy Sahara Desert covering 155 miles over six days. Luke also ran 40 miles from Mt Everest base camp into Nepal despite an intestinal ailment that prevented him from eating or drinking anything for four days prior. He created his own 12-day "Ultimate Triathlon"," swimming the Gibraltar Strait (Spain to Morocco) and pedaling and running along the Mediterranean for 2,000 kilometers total. Check out the Amazon Prime documentary "The Ultimate Triathlon." Alas, these extreme efforts (and the grueling PR and logistics efforts behind the scenes) destroyed Luke's physical health and exacerbated his clinical depression. This forced him to reckon with his purpose and recalibrate on a journey of healing. Today Luke is a mental training coach for aspiring peak performances. He coaches and lectures about how to push through perceived barriers with the force of mind, while at the same time maintaining a commitment to leading a healthy, balanced life. His autobiography is called Chasing Extreme.

The Primal Kitchen Podcast - Where Do Legumes Belong in the Primal Eating Plan?
play

09/22/16 • 10 min

I never cared much for legumes growing up. Growing up, beans were the “magical (or musical) fruit that made you toot.” They existed in a quantum state: beans were your ally in schoolyard rear-facing attacks and your downfall during encounters with that pretty girl from history class. But the issues I had were mostly superficial. I’ve never come out strongly against legumes. My focus has always been on grain avoidance.
