The Photographer Mindset - A Learning Experience from a Client Shoot
play

06/17/22 • 53 min

After ten days away in Spain I'm back with Aaron to catch up, talk about a bit of my trip and see what Aaron has been up to.
Aaron breaks down his most recent experience shooting for a travelling van company and his recap of the event is filled with useful information and lessons that we want listeners to use when working on commercial gigs. It's always better to learn from other people's mistakes than your own.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @johnnardacci with this beautiful "flowy" waterfall shot in Mass, USA! Getting the greens right in a photo is tricky and John nailed it. If you're listening on Spotify you're able to see his image. Because we have the Instagram launched, you can now also view all TPM features on our profile under the "TPMartwork" highlight icon. Be sure to check out more of John's work and keep submitting to the hashtag for your chance to have your image featured and talked about on a future episode!

The Photographer Mindset - How to Find New & Exciting Things to Shoot Locally
play

06/10/22 • 44 min

In this episode we tackle a question and topic from a listener of the show regarding how get excited and motivated to get out and shoot subjects in your local that may not be as thrilling as places like Yellowstone or Iceland. We dive into the importance of creating a photograph rather than simply using a gorgeous scene as a crutch. Lastly, we talk about the amount of genres of photography available to try and experiment with in places where location doesn't hinder your ability to capture content.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @likelytowander with her awesome shot of a red Summer Tanager chowing on a dragonfly! This is a photo where her patience allowed her to catch the animal performing an interesting act. The animal's behaviour makes the photo, not the subject itself. If you're listening on Spotify you're able to see her image. Be sure to check out more of her work and keep submitting to the hashtag for your chance to have your image featured and talked about on a future episode!

Lyndon Norman (@lyndonswildphotos) is a wildlife and nature photographer from Alberta, Canada. She has a genuine passion for ethical wildlife and nature photography, and prioritizes unique perspectives and the safety of animals.
Social media, we all know, is a mess. Anxiety, harmful comparison, grinding until we burnout, feeling like we need to feed the machine. Sometimes we may find ourselves wondering why we started our photography journey in the first place. Thankfully in this episode with Lyndon, we talk about practicing photography simply in the pursuit of happiness rather than achievement. We also describe ways to fulfill our need to create art without worrying about content metrics, insights, and performance constantly.
Expect to learn how to get back to your "why" for photography, how to realize that "more" isn't always better than "enough", why you shouldn't be glued to your social media insights, and how to ensure you're making photos that you love and not what just feeds the algorithm.

In this episode we review our time spent away in Zion National Park for the first ever TPM retreat. We go into detail about what we did, what everyone who attended taught us, and what some of the biggest takeaways were.
It's clear based on the response from people who attended and from those who commented on posts seen online, that this will definitely have to be a reoccurring event that Aaron and I organize. We plan to setup retreats in many locations globally and will definitely announce them without any hint. So be on top of episodes! Whether it's with the TPM group, another squad, or something you organize yourself, we encourage everyone to seek out that like minded connection and build a team of people who you click with. It's life changing.
We wanted to once again thank those who attended! You are wonderful humans with so much to offer each in your own unique ways. We couldn't be prouder of the group that came together and made an unforgettable experience. You truly embody the photographer mindset:

The Photographer Mindset - The Age of Transparency with @canoe_carrier
play

04/16/21 • 61 min

This episode features a discussion with Colin Bruce, (@canoe_carrier) a wildlife photographer from the Algonquin Park area of Ontario, Canada. Colin is extremely self aware and has a set of principles, ideas, and morals as a photographer and individual that I really respect and feel more people should emulate.
In this episode we chat about how important transparency is in photography, especially wildlife photography. What's going on behind the lens, or how you acquired a photograph is very important to be honest about for viewers who are naive and who may become wrongly inspired. We talk about where to draw the line with editing in wildlife and nature photography and to make sure our edits are not doing our subject a disservice. Lastly, Colin and I put to bed once and for all the myth that better gear will make you a better photographer. Shooting on a setup that cost him $650, Colin is walking proof you can get great results without breaking the bank.

Important news! You listeners are so great and Aaron and I want to create ways to get you more involved in the show. We've introduced #tpmartwork ! We want you kind folks to start hashtagging your IG posts with #tpmartwork for a chance to have your photo credited and featured as the cover art for an episode. This isn't a one-time thing... we plan on doing it for each new episode! If we like the shot and find it fitting we'll talk about it on the show and shout you out! Get on that people...
In this episode we talk about burnout, which we've done before, except this time we go more in depth about how to key into a level of self awareness that lets you know what remedies to take before hitting the wall. We go over some cues or indicators that provide us hints that we're overwhelmed or burnt out and need to step away. Lastly, we touch on the difference and similarities between a creative burnout and simply being overwhelmed with other important parts of life. Often something's gotta give. There's only so much energy you can expend!
