Who am I?

Food connects us all. It always has. From the times when we gathered around the fire in a cave, to medieval feasts, to today's family holiday gatherings. Food is universal. Joyful. And natural, wild food ingredients, are what nurture us completely. Being grounded to the world around us and the way that nature sustains us has never been more obvious to me now that I am focused on collecting wild food ingredients. Being able to become a part of the natural rhythm of life, to create dishes that bring joy to others, all of these feelings of connectedness are what drive me to produce the Food Afield Podcast, and cook for my friends. My name is John Schneider. I fly fish, hunt, and forage for wild food. I also cook over open fires. I share my wild food adventures on my podcast and Instagram channel. From the time I can remember, I have wanted to cook things over an open fire. As a youngster, my Mother gave me the freedom to spend time outdoors roaming the pine-covered hills and boreal wetlands around our farm. I've always hunted for food. The whole point of being outside was to try to catch or find something to cook and eat. There have been miserable failures along the way I can tell you. Today, with my show, and my involvement in the web series From the Wild, I am surrounded by friends who are expert chefs, biologists, fishers, foragers, and hunters. The foods we collect and prepare is amazing and I am continually learning how to be better. Wild food ingredients and how to collect them is the motto of the show and the passion in my life.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

The Food Afield Podcast is all about sharing our adventures in the backcountry. Wild food ingredients and how to collect them. The episodes are mostly recorded in the field, as events unfold. The show is documentary in nature. Literally. We try to inspire and help people achieve their own wild food adventures. We share the knowledge we've gained from decades of active pursuit of wild game and fish, and then we try to teach folks how to prepare those ingredients into wonderful dishes they can share with friends and family. Connecting to nature, becoming an active participant, and learning to value these wild spaces, to protect them, are the goals of the Food Afield Podcast.
