Laura helps us look at the spiritual essence of our years after 50 when we have the time and space to be still for a while, rather than always do. I (Tessa) was so delighted to do this interview. Laura is a Certified Life Coach, and is a transition and leadership strategist. Laura has an MBA from NYU and is a widely published writer having been published in such publications as The Huffington Post and Medium.
I watched and witnessed Laura’s journey for many years, observing her grow in her wisdom. I wanted to call this episode “growing our wisdom muscle.” And I am so excited for you to hear the incredible knowledge and wisdom from this very special lady.
A few thoughts from Laura
The fastest thing way to get want you want is to let go of what you don’t.
We are always at the starting line: there actually is no finish line.
I have downsized homes more than once. I have gotten rid of 80% of the stuff that I’ve every known, which was incredibly liberating.
I want to shift the conversation on how we view the different stages of aging.
There have been many of life’s milestones in my life that all seemed to happen early in my life. Marriage, kids, divorce and a second long-term relationship – all well before I was 50 years old.
My “wisdom” come from my ability to understand my various life transitions.
Remember Her?
I specialize in extraordinary communication, inspiring courage, resilience and the vision for what’s possible, and designing plans for empowered and intentional action.
Simple, simpler, simplest is my mantra; together we will turn complexity into opportunity.
I will never leave you asking “What am I supposed to do next?”
I believe in your higher purpose and unlimited potential, no obstacle will stop you from achieving your goals.

Laura’s Blog: New & Next
There are two words that I believe hold women back more than any others; “sure” and “fine”.
In fact, I find these words cringeworthy.
They are cop outs, cover ups and almost always, total bullshit. They are what women often say when they are not comfortable speaking their truth; when they are afraid to say what they really want.
The problem with using these words, is that they prevent you from doing and becoming what you truly desire and ultimately lead you to mediocrity in your life and career. A few years back, I broke up with mediocrity, I had had enough.

I Want That and More (with Jahaira and Marvin Episode 11)
I Want That and More with Jahaira and Marvin
(The Open Nesters Episode 11)
If You Only Have a Minute For Us Push Play to Listen to a Summary.
https://theopennesters.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Episode-11-one-minute-summary.mp3In this Episode 11 we meet Jahaira and Marvin who are swingers who really never stopped swinging, even when they became polyamorous. These are our good friends from way back when we were exploring all sides of our own relationships and sexuality. They have a full-fledged “quad open relationship.” And we hear about Jahaira’s “I want that” moment.
Jahaira came from a very formal background. Her parents were never allowed to be alone together. In fact Jahaira was born nine months to the day of her parents’ marriage. She comes from a Latino household, and had so many questions at a young age. For a moment she thought that she was gay... yet was also attracted to boys.
Marvin’s parents were from the Caribbean and had a strong work and life ethic. Sturdy, traditional, conservative are good words to describe his parenting and background. Together these two “did everything in the right way.” Yet they made the transition to “more their relationship”... namely non-monogamy.
After Becoming a Couple
Jaharia has always been such a curious person... which led her to one-night-stands. She knew she was taking risks and Marvin began to ask lots of questions. And Jahaira was always 100% honest, acknowledging that she was “pushing things.” Once in New York they had a lot of fun socially, in clubs, with others interested in swinging. And there, Jahaira found out that she enjoyed sex with women too. Lots of fun. Yet they shared with us that fact that swinging was really not that satisfying to them.
I WANT THAT!And it was at a party when Jahaira and Marvin met a woman who was accompanied by her husband... and boyfriend. Jahaira was impressed. To say the least. And she knew that this kind of relationship was what she wanted. Really wanted!!!
Marvin’s Wisdom: “Jealousy is a selfish emotion.”
Marvin was able to understand and deal with jealousy. Yet that was challenged when Jahaira fell for another man. He became the “home person” while Jahaira had her “fantasy person.” And this caused them to have to learn how to bring the right love and energy to the home... beyond the fantasies.
I Want That... and the Open Nest
Jahaira’s other partner lived hours away, which made it somehow easier. There was a tremendous amount of communication, but in-person time was really limited. And then Jahaira found a second outside partner who was closer. And this prompted Marvin to seek to find this kind of bliss for himself. And things got complicated for the adult kids. And it all had to come out into the open. This led to the family meeting... challenging to be sure... but full of openness and love... and complete honesty.Resources for You

As we become “age-full” we can be present, and curious, and open-minded and explore again – like we did when we were children. So says our guest, Ashton Applewhite. I (Tessa) am a big fan of Ashton’s thinking on the concept of “agelessness.” To me this idea strips us of our years... and we are left with ourselves.
Ashton discusses the concept that was recently announced in the Northeast USA... called “Ageless New York.” In fact Ashton has a full chapter in her book about agelessness. She say that “agelessness tends to minimize the differences which contribute to our lives in all sorts of ways.” Ashton believes we should embrace and celebrate these differences, as they make us special.
Generations
Ashton has a lot to say about the idea of a “generation.” She says there is more diversity in a group of people that we would think of as homogeneous than there is between what we would call disparate groups. The idea of a generation pits us against each other.
Intergenerational Conflict: Ashton says there is no evidence of intergenerational conflict. No evidence that “old people don’t care about young people, and young people want to throw old people to the wolves.” Most us inhabit the middle ground. In fact the World Health Organization just launched a global program to combat ageism.
Ashton on Ageism
Ageism is stereotyping and discrimination on the basis of a person’s age. We experience it any time someone assumes that we’re “too old” for something—a task, a haircut, a relationship—instead of finding out who we are and what we’re capable of. Or “too young;” ageism cuts both ways, although in a youth-obsessed society olders bear the brunt of it. Click the pic here to visit Ashton’s page on ageism.

Ashton’s Book: This Chair Rocks
People are happiest at the beginnings and the ends of their lives. Only 2.5% of Americans over 65 live in nursing homes. Older people enjoy better mental health than the young or middle-aged. Dementia rates are falling, fast. So how come so many of us unthinkingly assume that depression, diapers, and dementia lie ahead? That the 20th century’s astonishing leap in life expectancy is a disaster-in-the making? Underlying all the hand-wringing is ageism: discrimination that sidelines and silences older people. So I’ve written a book. I blog about it. I led the team that developed Old School, a clearinghouse of anti-ageism resources. I am the voice of Yo, Is This Ageist? (Go ahead, ask me.) I’ve written a consciousness-raising booklet. And I speak widely. All tools to help catalyze a movement to make discrimination on the basis of age as unacceptable as any other kind.
