In this podcast episode, Dr. Valerie, a behavior analyst, discusses the principles of behavior analysis and its applications in understanding and changing behavior. She emphasizes the importance of identifying the contextual variables that influence learning and behavior patterns. Dr. Valerie explains that behaviors, even those considered unhelpful, serve a purpose and are part of an individual's behavioral ecology.

She shares insights from her experience in marital research, highlighting how understanding the function of responses can lead to more effective communication and problem-solving.

Dr. Valerie addresses common challenges in behavior change, particularly in health and weight loss. She distinguishes between two types of motivation: avoidance (doing something to escape or avoid negative outcomes) and pursuit (doing something to achieve positive outcomes). She argues that the latter, which involves positive reinforcement and accessing intrinsic values, is more sustainable. Dr. Valerie suggests that reconnecting with activities enjoyed in childhood or finding new value in necessary tasks can help maintain motivation.

The discussion also touches on practical strategies for fostering motivation, such as behavioral momentum—starting with easy tasks to build motivation for more challenging ones. Dr. Valerie underscores the importance of mental health and pursuing intrinsic values for long-term behavior change.

Who is Dr. Valerie Evans?

Valerie A. Evans, Ph.D. is a licensed and board-certified behavior analyst. She owns a continuing education business that reviews current research and best practices for behavior analysis programs. Dr. Evans has aspired to feel better about her body since the onset of puberty and has experience with just about every diet program. Two years ago, Valerie turned to diet apps to feel like herself again following surgery. However, instead of reconnecting with her body she felt more disconnected than ever—completely consumed with the diet app numbers game. It was then that she said “no weigh” to the counting, tracking, budgeting, and overall life-consuming task of restriction diets.

Dr. Evans responded by creating her own app, a diet program alternative called No Weigh. No Weigh shows users how to leverage behavior analysis devices to make simple adjustments to the contexts of their daily lives to maintain motivation and lose weight naturally.

In this interview, I enjoy a great conversation with Christina Dent who shares how becoming a foster parent transformed her type of thinking process when it comes to criminalizing drugs.

We discuss how addressing drugs and drug use as a complex health issue could dramatically reduce crime, overdose deaths, and the destabilization of families.

I truly enjoyed this eye-opening conversation and I know you will too.

Tune in for more...

Who is Christina Dent?

Christina Dent is a politically conservative Christian who supported criminalizing drugs until she became a foster parent and saw the negative effects up close. She researched why drug-related harm isn’t decreasing and became convinced it’s because the criminal justice system is the wrong tool for addressing drugs.

In 2017, she began hosting book discussions in her home state of Mississippi using Johann Hari’s book “Chasing The Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs.” Those discussions grew to hundreds of people which led to End It For Good becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2019. Christina invites people to explore how addressing drugs and drug use as a complex health issue could dramatically reduce crime, overdose deaths, and the destabilization of families.

Christina leads End It For Good from the same passion that led her to foster care – helping children, families, and communities thrive. She isn’t advocating drug use. She’s advocating approaches to drugs that prioritize life and the opportunity to thrive.

The Mindful Experiment Podcast - EP#485 - Finding the Exit Velocity to Aging with Guest: Marek Piotrowski
play

11/21/23 • 32 min

Welcome back to another episode here on The Mindful Experiment.

This week, we had the pleasure of interviewing Marek Piotrowski. Marek is on a venture to discover the secrets to longevity as he is traveling around the world with his 17 year old son. They have set a quest for one year (at the time of the recording they are 3 months in) to discover how far back can we turn back the clock on aging and can we find the exit velocity to aging to where each year, we get younger, rather than older.

If you are reading that last sentence and saying, “Wait a minute, that is impossible,” then you MUST listen to this episode.

We dove into the three spears of longevity. If you been a longtime listener to the podcast, you will know 2 out of the 3 spheres for sure.

We talk a bit about how things are going for him and his son being with each other 24/7 and Marek shares the good, the bad and the ugly about the experience.

And lastly, we talk about his upcoming documentary of why he is traveling around the world to meet with the top scientists when it comes to longevity and share his Q/As that he has with each of them on his quest to find the exit velocity to aging.

Make sure to subscribe to the podcast, share the episode on your socials and share a review wherever you are listening to podcasts.

Until next time, make it a great day!

Dr. Vic
