This can lead to doubts in your ability to trust yourself, and a long road of ignoring your own pain signals, or a feeling of failing once you decide to make a different plan for your baby.

Vicki was a NICU Nurse helping people learn to breastfeed for 5 years before she had her own breastfeeding experience. She thought with all of her knowledge of breastfeeding and milk supply that it would go easily for her. Her heart broke when that was not the case and she struggled with low milk supply. She was doing everything right, feeding on demand, pumping to increase supply, and her milk only decreased over time. She felt defeated. It was so hard for her to return to work, but to her surprise, she found healing in helping others feed their babies. It was two years after her youngest was done breastfeeding that she learned the underlying cause of her low milk supply.

Amy was a NICU nurse before she was a parent, and she still didn’t know what she didn’t know when it came to breastfeeding. She has five human milk feeding experiences to share, all VERY DIFFERENT. From the perfect first experience to low supply to the second, most likely due to a stressful work environment and a misunderstanding about the difference between pumping supply and at-the-body supply, to exclusive pumping for surrogate twins and then having two more babies both with painful latches as a result of tongue tie.

On this episode you will hear themes related to:

  • Being dismissed by lactation consultants
  • The impact a work environment can have on supply
  • Learning more as you go
  • Self-compassion
  • Importance of proper flange sizing for good pumping milk supply

Criselda is a first generation Mexican American, one of five daughters born to her mother who moved to the United States from Mexico. Because she worked in the service industry as a waiter in a high end restaurants and knew how grueling that work could be on pregnant moms and families in general, it took her many years to decide to have kids.

Once she delivered her two boys she faced separate challenges with each of them that made breastfeeding and pumping difficult.

Desi is a mom of two children ages 12 and 8. She Gave birth at two different hospitals due to changing access to care after deciding to stay home with her first baby and losing her employer provided insurance. Breastfeeding went relatively smoothly the first time around. She hired a doula, found her care to be fantastic at her hospital birth, and her baby took to nursing easily. It took her by surprise when breastfeeding was much harder and much more painful the second time around. Luckily, the doula she had hired for her first birth was able to recommend a lactation consultant who was able to provide the support she needed. Desi breastfed both of her children well into toddlerhood.

Desi is a dog trainer located in Central, Ma. She does FANTASTIC work. I should know--she trained my dog! If you need help with your dog for training or boarding in Ma or virtually, you can find her here: https://www.dogdaysdogtraining.com/ Follow her on IG @dogdaysofDesi

Lo's sister Amy is on the podcast, and it was a delight to have one hour to chat with her about breastfeeding! She has 6 children, three of whom she birthed and breastfed. She had a really tough first experience, that was made even more challenging because she took custody of her three older children when her first biological baby was 4 weeks old and she wasn't even in the swing of things with breastfeeding. Getting her first to latch was very challenging and if it wasn't for lifelong athlete mentality, she would not have made it through. Her second and third were not *as* challenging, but she did have an accidental homebirth on the exact same day that Lo had her homebirth!

Olivia's baby Lennon was born a couple of weeks early weighing just 5 pounds. She felt very supported at the hospital, and left feeling confident about breastfeeding. That was, until she went to a prescheduled follow appointment with the lactation consultant on day 6 and discovered her baby had dropped half a pound since birth. They made a plan to exclusively pump both to monitor Lennon's intake and to manage her own anxiety, with the expectation that she would go back to feeding at the breast. Listen in to hear how Olivia managed the stress of changing plans and unmet expectations.

In this episode you will hear Olivia discuss:

  • having a low birth weight baby
  • being anxious about baby weight gain
  • low milk supply
  • triple feeding
  • deciding to exlusive pumping
  • attempts to increase milk suppy
  • the decision to swith to formula fully

Gretchen is a busy working mom of three who was determined to breastfeed not only because she knew it was best for her kids, but also, as she put it, because she wanted the ease to be able to "move around with my breasts and a diaper in my back pocket. And a change of clothes in the other and call it a day."

Gretchen also knew she ONLY wanted to breastfeed her kids for about a year, once teeth were in the picture she wasn't interested in continuing. This conversation is chock full of practical advice, but will also make you giggle. My good friend Gretchen is a delight, and I know you will walking away loving my friend as much as I do.

If you want to get to know Gretchen better and feel she can help your family to improve at-home learning (i.e. reduce homework battles, understand what the teachers are asking your kids to do while IMPROVING your connection with your kids) check out her amazing organization Co-Teach and get to work with her (or another great Co-Teacher) personally.

Laura really didn’t know what to expect when she had her first baby. She had one friend who was willing to share breastfeeding details with her, but other than that did not know many other people who were very open about their breastfeeding journeys. She was adopted and so giving birth and breastfeeding brought a host of new new feelings she didn’t expect before becoming a mother. Breastfeeding did not come easily for Laura. As a busy mom or three children, you can hear her busy life in the background throughout the episode! The background noise gives us a tiny glimpse into Laura’s every day life. Many of us can relate.

Laura discusses:

  • severe pain
  • tongue ties
  • the stress of needing to supplement when that was not part of the plan.
  • twin feeding
  • choosing to formula feed for her own health

Kerry had very little breastfeeding exposure before having her first baby. She was pressured into a C-section where her baby was immediately put into an isolette. She was given very little support initially and she was given incorrect information. On her final day she was able to get breastfeeding support from an IBCLC which made all the difference. Kerry was breastfeeding when her oldest was a year old, when she discovered she was pregnant with her second. She continued to breastfeed throughout the pregnancy, despite being told misinformation about breastfeeding through pregnancy by her OBGYN.

She felt confident in her decision because she had read Adventures in Tandem Nursing: Breasteeding During Pregnancy and Beyond and educated herself about breastfeeding during pregnancy. Her second baby was also delivered by c-section, but this time she asked to hold the baby immediately and made it clear what she needed from the hospital staff to support breastfeeding.

She tandem nursed both kids until they were 4 1/2 and 6 1/2 and threw a weaning party when they stopped breastfeeding. Ten years later, she had a third child who was born at home vaginally.

Kerry discusses such topics as:

  • postpartum depression
  • pumping for work
  • tandem breastfeeding
  • weaning a toddler
