The Metal Cell Podcast

Richard Duhig

Irelands Premier Metal Music Podcast. The Metal Cell Podcast sets out to promote the Irish Metal Scene by talking to the bands, promoters, artists and fans of this musical genre. I hope to interview as many generations as possible involved in the Irish Metal community from those who create the music, design the artwork, promote the gigs or simply fans of the music itself. It's one of the most exciting times ever to be a Metal fan in Ireland with so many home grown and international metal bands touring our cities and releasing incredible music. This Podcast has become a solid link in communicating our voices throughout the world wide Metal community. The bonds forged in the Metal Scene are strong, loyal and lasting. Friendships created that traverse oceans and continents linking us to Europe, the America's, The Far East and even into the Eastern Block. Thank you all for listening and for your support, Richie. #supportyourlocalmetalscene

It was a pleasure to visit Hardcore/Metal act Worn Out up in their rehearsal space to celebrate the launch of their jaw-droppingly aggressive debut E.P 'WASTE'. Having witnessed the whole E.P played with brutal fury live in Belfast a few months back, it was a great to get the inside story on the the four tracks that make up this blistering debut. The first single release that cranked up the anticipation levels was 'Miles Away' mainly due to Conor Dockery's excellently twisted dark video. The lads fill us in on that and we talk about the production, recording and mixing of Aidan Cunningham. Getting James Sheridan was an inspired choice with the fantastic artwork that mirrors the abrasive onslaught of the E.P. After waiting for nearly two and a half years, WORN OUT have finally delivered a debut E.P that simply smashes the listener in the face and it's a glorious knockout blow. It's my favourite E.P of the year, so go out if you haven't already and buy the vinyl, the merch and celebrate another amazing band to look forward to in 2022. A special thanks goes out to Paul Flynn of Paul Flynn Productions who did a brilliant job of filming and editing this episode.

The Metal Cell was delighted to start off 2020 with the first of a series of new acts to look out for in the Irish Metal Scene. Spirit Merchant's Colin Bolger (Vox/Guitars), Leon (Bass/Effects) and Ollie (Drums) all have a wealth of experience between them in their respective bands Zhora, Coroza and Medicant. It was great to sit down with the lads and explore the fundamental building blocks of Spirit Merchant. Having seen their debut last year, I was intrigued to hear how they've progressed as a three piece and they were quick to tell me that they had no shortage of new songs. It didn't surprise me to hear they were experimenting with various tones to bring a earthier soundscape to enrich the listeners experience and the conversation flowed around such topics as their band name, lyrics and festivals. The next few months will be important for Spirit Merchant with an upcoming appearance in Metal 2 The Masses and the release of a debut E.P. Colin, Ollie and Leon are seriously talented musicans and it was great to chat about the Metal Scene from their perspective. I have no doubt that they are ready to take a giant step into making 2020 a year to remember for those who witness them live and hope that whatever they release will live long in the memory of Irish Metal music.

The Metal Cell Compilation Green Hell Pt.1 (featuring my favourite belter's of 2019) is my way of ending 2019 with a solid dose of Irish heft. This year has been an incredible year for the Irish Metal Scene. The quality of the releases from all our bands has truly brought it to another level in musicianship and professionalism. The amount of bands vying for our attention is incredible, artists created some of their best work ever for album designs and t-shirt's, different genres within the scene sparked lots of interest and encouraged bands to embrace diversity. From the length and breadth of the country, bands have been showing up to play gigs, thankfully promoter's there in our main cities to facilitate this here, the U.K and Europe. I also want to acknowledge Limerick's, Zealot Cult who hit the USA to play a series of gigs as well. While I'm on about Limerick, Bad Reputation and DME Promotions combined to hire out King Johns Castle to host Amon Amarth and Behemoth, one of many highlights of the year for me, along with Rotting Christ hitting Cork for the terrific Monolith Festival, the success of the Siege of Limerick and the Invictus 20 year bash. One can only hope someone will document it in a book next year, I'd like to think the Podcast's certainly captured alot of the vibe of 2019 and I'm so happy to be able to promote the scene here and through Pure Rock Radio in Canada. In picking my compilation, I wanted to include as many bands as I could and to promote the diversity that exists in our scene. I wasn't always into Sludge, Post Metal, Doom, Black metal etc but I have kept a complete open mind going into gigs to watch these bands and have benefited enormously because of it. So having a time frame does tend to confine my selection and it makes it so difficult to leave out some bands therefore apologies if some releases didn't make the cut. Finally I'm so happy to be in the position to release this compilation to the many countries that I have listeners in, thank you all who have loved the show and for your continued support here in Ireland and further afield; shout outs to my listeners who downloaded the shows in Russia, Brazil, Australia, Israel, India, South Africa and many more who love Metal!!!

It was an honour to sit down with the great Sakis of Rotting Christ and talk about Heretics, art, inspiration and the importance of connecting with metal fans through his music. Even though it was a short conversation, I was able to take away from it a man of unshakable faith in the music he creates for his fans, knowing that the joy that he generates for us metalheads playing Rotting Christ's music brings him absolute happiness.

The Metal Cell was delighted to have hosted Pat Clancy and Tony 'Toby' Boyle, two absolute legends of the Cork and Irish Metal Scene. They have gone to countless gigs, collected a huge array of priceless memorabilia with Pat in possession of over 9,000 vinyl records, original tapes and demos of all genres in metal and shared their passion for metal to thousands across the world. It really is a great example of how two guys from Ireland connected with and communicated with fellow metallers in an age where facebook wasn't available, downloads didn't exist and hard copies mattered. Enjoy the conversation and please share it if you like it. Shout outs to Metal Radio Ireland, King Woes Court Podcast and Tommy from the Soundcellar.

The Metal Cell Podcast - Episode 98: Conor "Dock" Dockery of The Scratch/Red Enemy.
play

11/19/20 • 85 min

Conor "Dock" Dockery could be described as a vital cog in the music scene, be it writing tunes with his band The Scratch, people referencing his previous work with Red Enemy or his work behind the lens, filming artists from a multitude of music genres. Myself and Evan get a great insight on "Dock" as he fills us in on the rollercoaster of a career he experienced in the music scene, since he embarked on it during his teens. It's also to "Docks" credit that he answered the hard questions about Red Enemy and if you're a fan of the band this episode is not to be missed! Please convert your friends to the show, share it and subscribe to it on YouTube. Respect and thanks Richie.

Rodger Boyle is a seriously talented artist that has released some incredible releases under various monikers. Not only that he also owns and runs a internationally recognised underground record label called Cursed Monk Records from Galway in Ireland. Rodger has underground metal acts from all over the world and has some terrific Irish acts like TOOMS, Nomadic Rituals, Fraught and the newly signed Molarbear. He has plenty of his own solo projects to represent his own output like Ruairi O'Baoighill, Noosed and Dr.Bastard. Myself and Danielle had a great chat with him to cover all aspects of his passion for metal and had a good craic as well. Thanks for watching and please subscribe, share or like the show. Thanks Richie.

The Metal Cell Forums. Join myself, Danielle, Evan and Joe as we talk about the Irish Metal Scene, review bands and discuss topics related to our favourite music....METAL! This weeks show is a fairly busy one. We have a discussion about an exciting project that is slowly coming to fruition called Aiséirí - All Ireland Metal Project. Aiséirí means resurrection in Irish and it involves artists all over this great island contributing/collaborating to record one album with 15 - 20 tracks. All profits go to the charity of choice. The main topic of the night is One Hit Wonders of Metal...those bands that briefly lit up the charts, MTV playlists, Headbangers Ball, Kerrang and Metal Hammer. We review five new releases by BRUIT, Blurred Reality, Cynic Cult, For Ruin and Strangers With Guns. Hope you enjoy and please subscribe to the show if you haven't done already. Thanks Richie.

We jump back in time with Clive Bolger (drummer of Tasc), Brian Bowell (bassist of Worn Out), Dave Cleere (bassist of Bailer) and Dave Longan (guitarist of Aponym) to discuss the Waterford Metal Scene that sprung up in the 80's right up to a few years ago. When I heard that Def Leppard played to a packed pub in Tramore before they flew off to Donnington, it certainly made me sit up. The Waterford music scene has a rich history of music/concerts but I always thought it was more dance orientated or favoured trad based bands. Clive Bolger grew up in the eighties and played drums with many bands along with getting support slots to Def Leppard and Mama's Boys. He was also a promoter in the city until he finally left for Madrid. Another musician and promoter was Dave Cleere who both played in The Great Ocean Divide and set up Murphfest. Brian also played in Dave's band, was involved with setting up gigs and was very active in the scene. Dave Longan, who grew up in Dungarvan gave us some interesting insights into the student culture and the role that the Central Arts played in hosting Metal gigs. We also discuss pirate Metal shows on the local radio, different festivals and try to figure out how the scene slowly finally fizzled out. It was great to sit in on this with the lads and if you enjoyed it please hit that subscribe button. Thanks Richie.

I was delighted to finally open up the Metal Cell studios to welcome Chris Harte of Bailer. When Chris sent me on 'Disposable Youth' a few days previous, I was nervous enough approaching it. The four singles sounded immense but how would they interact with the rest of the songs and how would it play as a whole album from the start to finish. The results were jaw dropping! Bailer have made the debut album we all hoped they would. They have given the Hardcore/Metal scene the shot in the arm it needed, a voice to a generation who have suffered from mental health issues, abandonment and sheer frustration at living in a void created by a failure of successive governments. The album grabs the listener by the throat and forces you to face what Bailer wants you to see....a brutal reality filled with hostility, where you are battered with seismic riffs and pummelled into submission by a band that are on top of their game. Chris navigates us through the making of 'Disposable Youth' their debut album, we explore the topics of the album and you get to hear clips of all the songs. A special thanks goes out to Paul Flynn of Paul Flynn Productions who did a fantastic job of filming and editing the episode which is available on The Metal Cell YouTube channel. Shout outs also to JGVisuals and Paul Flynn for the additional content.
