This podcast focuses on surviving life after a suicide loss, an experience that can be devastating and leave you feeling lost as you try to pick up the pieces of your shattered heart. The host, Melissa Bottorff-Arey, lost her 21-year-old son, Alex, to suicide on August 7, 2016, and brings (& often shares) her insights from her personal journey.
In each episode, Melissa engages in honest and challenging conversations with other survivors of loss, healers, and mental health experts. She also produces shorter solo episodes where she reflects on her own thoughts and experiences thus far. The podcast covers a wide range of relevant topics and addresses difficult questions. Melissa explores all aspects of grief, including trauma, hope, healing, self-care, legacy, and stigma. She believes that we learn to live alongside our grief rather than get ing over it. Actual change comes through authentic, meaningful connections and mindful choices.
For supporters or educators, these conversations provide valuable insights and shine a light on suicide and grief genuinely and unapologetically. Listeners who are grieving a suicide loss can find comfort in the community and hope for a better tomorrow. Melissa aims to help others, like herself, transition from merely surviving to discovering a life filled with meaning and, potentially, even happiness amid the leftover pieces around you.
[Please NOTE: This podcast is for only relational, informational, and entertainment purposes. It candidly and openly discusses sensitive and sometimes activating topics. There will be no in-depth or graphic descriptions of the method, but merely the possible mention of suicide, murder, rape, and the like. Be guided and care for yourself accordingly. Also, Melissa is not a doctor or licensed therapist, and nothing on this podcast should be taken in place of, or as, medical/mental health advice or recommendations.]

What If It's All in Our Minds; The Path to Less Suffering
The Leftover Pieces; Suicide Loss Conversations
09/26/21 • 20 min
Today I dive DEEP into the rabbit hole and discuss perception vs reality and if they are one in the same. I talk about where I am in this grief journey and the evolution of my thoughts on what we have the power over with regard to grief - in my opinion. I think that the real destruction lies in allowing ourselves to go on auto-pilot - you know when we are not intentional about how we are grieving or what choices we are making.

Suicide Can Happen in Any Family; A Mother's Humble Realization
The Leftover Pieces; Suicide Loss Conversations
03/28/22 • 72 min
Can it really happen to ANY family?? Unfortunately, many of us have discovered that answer. My guest in this episode knows this all too well herself.
Today I have a conversation with Janice "JJ" Joiner. JJ, aka "the catcher of babies" (certified nurse midwife) spent her career as a women’s healthcare provider, and is also a wife, mom, and “Honey” to her grandbabies! She says she now takes life "lone day at a time" since the loss of her beautiful son, Eric to mental illness that led to his suicide. JJ now hopes to work to help support others in this tragic space by normalizing the seeking of mental wellness just like we seek health for physical health. She shares her story openly with this goal at the forefront.
"...Born in Charleston WV, she grew up traveling throughout Europe. When JJ was only 11 she read "Cherry Ames- Student Nurse" and wanted to be a nurse from that point on! She started as a Labor & Delivery and after 14 years moved on to Nursing and Midwifery. She feels like she spent much of her career participating in and promoting the healthcare of women - her dream profession and along the way she and her (college sweetheart) husband built their own dream family - Katie, Eric, and JaneyGrace. By all accounts, her kids were easy-going and successful in everything they endeavored to do....yet, despite daily prayers for their happiness and safety in this big world, there came a day that she realized despite a life of serving people, delivering babies, volunteering and donating to charities...I was no better than anyone else in this world and my luck ran out and sadly it ran out on my boy..." - paraphrased straight from JJ

Toward Hope After Suicide Loss; The What, Why and How
The Leftover Pieces; Suicide Loss Conversations
11/22/21 • 21 min
Today I go "down the rabbit hole" to discuss HOPE. Suicide loss survivors struggle heavily with allowing hope back into their lives. I know that I choose to sit in hopelessness too long. So why is hope so important? Why do we need and how we get it -- and I even give you a tool to help facilitate taking the steps toward it!
I could not find a link that I loved to show you where to place your hands - it is because I didn't just take it from the internet, I learned this in my trauma-based healing training.
BUT HERE IS an ARTICLE that shows the pressure point and the second part comes really close to the technique I teach you. It also has some additional great information.
Hope to Hope Conference Day 2 - I speak at the 2:57 mark and am the final speaker of the conference BUT be sure to listen to Kim share an additional life experience that will inspire and impact! This was such great experience to be a part of this event - I am honored and humbled.
Be sure to watch Day 1 as well - it was equally amazing.

Being "That' (Whispered About) Person; Discussion & Tools
The Leftover Pieces; Suicide Loss Conversations
08/01/21 • 21 min
Today, I go "Down the Rabbit Hole" to talk about a topic that is NOT new to me -- in some form I have been living with this since losing Alex nearly 5 years ago. Unless you have not left your house yet, I am certain that you too have experienced some form of this isolating feeling that comes when you start to interact with people and they bring up children ... or mental health ... or look at you with that look and say "how ARE you?" Or "I just don't think I could do this, you are so strong".... OR (Fill in the blank) ... you even start to anticipate it before it happens. You feel like you are the one to avoid in the room ... ETC!!! Right??? How to cope!!??
As child (suicide) loss survivors we find that going out into public, or social circles, now creates more stress, where it once relieved stress to go out, see friends, be social. Not now, right? Even in leaving said event - we now carry the fact that once we have exited the space, the people left undoubtedly often talk about us in hushed tones -- "she's the one who lost her son to suicide" or "do you think she's 'coping' or ' doing ok' or ... ???
We TRY to not let it bother us, but it DOES, It is emotionally exhausting, and very isolating. So, how do we not let it hurt our healing or set us backward. How do we cope IN THE MOMENT?
I discuss this and also offer a tool (or two) that you may want to try that I believe will help. It can (& does) get better with time, but it takes work. AND somethings will just never be the same - and accepting that is just part of it too.
THANK YOU for listening, it means more than I can say. Sending so much love & peace to you all!
HERE is a good article from a website called Complex Trauma Resources that explains top-down, bottom-up & even side-door approaches to trauma healing. I think you will see why I gravitate toward the latter two.
This journey is SO HARD my friends, but you can do it, we can do it- together!

What Am I Watching (aka "Binging"); My Thoughts & Recommendations
The Leftover Pieces; Suicide Loss Conversations
01/31/21 • 22 min
Today, I go "Down the Rabbit Hole" to discuss things I have watched, binged or still want to watch with regards to suicide, loss & grief in general. These are everything from movies to series to documentaries; and can be watched on various platforms. THIS IS NOT A DEFINITIVE LIST of what I have watched NOR all of the subject matter ... just some that I chose to share today. Some of these titles are about suicide loss, but most just about loss and grief and how the characters deal with it in such different ways -- just like we do. I admit my taste runs to dark comedy or very real (head on tackling) subject matter so my list will be heavy that direction. I would love to know what you have watched that has distracted you or kept you company or held your heart as you grieve.
As with everything you hear on my podcasts, please take that which serves you & leave the rest. I hope you will find something of value & I am so sorry that you need to be here, but so honored you are here. Talk soon!
As I say at the end of the episode, there some really great conversations with some dynamic people coming in the next few months. Please reach out to me if you know of someone that I should talk to or if you yourself would like to have a conversation around the suicide loss and grief space. Instagram is probably still the best way to contact me or directly through email.
Here is the list of the films, series or other that I talked about AND as I said, I have listed next to each where I think (hope) you can find it to watch today ... but you, like me, may be relegated to "Google" a title and find out where it is currently since this seems to change often! The first 4 deal with suicide loss specifically
- "A Million Little Thing s" (ABC series, currently Amazon Prime has past episodes)
- "13 Reasons Why " AND "Beyond the Reasons"
- "Audrie & Daisy" (Netflix)
- "Suicide; The Ripple Effect" look on Facebook at the page of the same name
- "Pieces of a Woman" Martin Scorsese film on Netflix
- "Surviving Death" 6 part docuseries on death on Netflix
- "Lila & Eve" movie on Netflix
- "Dead to Me" - Netflix series
- "Six feet Under" - HULU ( an old HBO series)
- "Afterlife" - movie on Netflix
- "Virgin River" - series on Netflix
- "Memory of Water" - movie
- "Rabbit Hole" - movie
- "I Know This Much is True" -movie

Grief Tools; What are Mine?
The Leftover Pieces; Suicide Loss Conversations
12/20/20 • 13 min
In this mini "Down the Rabbit Hole " Episode I discuss the many tools that I have placed in my "grief toolkit" and others that I am exploring. This is NOT to be taken as definitive OR construed as medical advice. I offer ONLY my own perspective & thoughts based on my life, beliefs & experiences, but that's all it is ... this ladies opinion. And I really only scratch the surface & will talk on this subject more in the future as well as have deeper conversations on some of the "tools" I use & rely on!
As with everything you hear on my podcasts, please take that which serves you & leave the rest. I hope you will find something of value & I am so sorry that you need to be here, but so honored you are here. Talk soon!
Here are a few - ONLY a few - places to explore your curiosity in the subjects I addressed today. This is NOT a definitive guide NOR is it official advice - just me sharing some resources:
WebMD article on Essential Oils - an interesting read
DoTerra Oils; How to use them - this is the brand I use
Evolve Transpersonal Crystal Healing - straight from the land down under
MindBodyGrief Emily Dziedzic, founder and operator of Mind Body Grief. is a Grief Coach who works with women who are ready to reclaim their life after loss. As a Certified Master Practitioner and Coach of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Time Line Therapy ®, and Hypnotherapy, I provide women with the tools needed to regain footing in their life following a significant loss.
Beginners Guide to Chakra's - one of so many places to start AND it links you to Yoga Journal so a 2-for-1 here :)
Prevention Magazine article of anxiety/chakras/meditation
Sound Healing Benefits article in Well & Good
The best "Crystal Live" on Instagram (in my opinion) for real connection AND crystals
OPRAH article on Cleansing Aura & Chakras - I mean if Oprah says .... lol, it is an interesting article though
There are so many more I could put here (like podcasts I recommendations or audio books I have enjoyed) but will save for another day! :)

Joey Somebody; Sibling Loss, Vulnerability and the Male Ego
The Leftover Pieces; Suicide Loss Conversations
03/07/21 • 81 min
Today I am sharing a very important conversation. I recently spoke with Joey Dumont, a self-professed 'recovering egoist' who took a year off to write a book about his life, his loss & 'recovery' that turned into three and has now sent him down a new path of (comedic) enlightenment with a heart for helping others. Joey lost his younger brother to suicide in April 2007 and spent the next year basically hiding, or perhaps running, from the grief, the PTSD and more. Sibling loss is complicated and as we know, loss by suicide even more so. It truly was a joy to talk with him. I hope you will take something from it as well!
ALL THINGS Joey Dumont can be found here... his book ("Joey Somebody"), his podcast ("Laugh Your Cry Out") and his coaching! I encourage you to check him out! I cannot wait to listen to his podcast and read his book. Again HERE is the LINK go check him out!

“A podium and a prison is each a place, one high and the other low, but in either place your freedom of choice can be maintained if you so wish.” —EPICTETUS, DISCOURSES, 2.6.25
"The Stoics all held vastly different stations in life. Some were rich, some were born at the bottom of Rome’s rigid hierarchy. Some had it easy, and others had it unimaginably hard. This is true for us as well—we all come to philosophy from different backgrounds, and even within our own lives we experience bouts of good fortune and bad fortune. But in all circumstances—adversity or advantage—we really have just one thing we need to do: focus on what is in our control as opposed to what is not. Right now we might be laid low with struggles, whereas just a few years ago we might have lived high on the hog, and in just a few days we might be doing so well that success is actually a burden. One thing will stay constant: our freedom of choice—both in the big picture and small picture. Ultimately, this is clarity. Whoever we are, wherever we are—what matters is our choices. What are they? How will we evaluate them? How will we make the most of them? Those are the questions life asks us, regardless of our station. How will you answer?" - all above quoted words from the credited to the authors**
I hope you are considering journaling along with us in January

“I am your teacher and you are learning in my school. My aim is to bring you to completion, unhindered, free from compulsive behavior, unrestrained, without shame, free, flourishing, and happy, looking to God in things great and small—your aim is to learn and diligently practice all these things. Why then don’t you complete the work, if you have the right aim and I have both the right aim and right preparation? What is missing? . . . The work is quite feasible, and is the only thing in our power. . . . Let go of the past. We must only begin. Believe me and you will see.” —EPICTETUS, DISCOURSES, 2.19.29–34
"Do you remember, in school or early in your life, being afraid to try something because you feared you might fail at it? Most teenagers choose to fool around rather than exert themselves. Halfhearted, lazy effort gives them a ready-made excuse: “It doesn’t matter. I wasn’t even trying.” As we get older, failure is not so inconsequential anymore. What’s at stake is not some arbitrary grade or intramural sports trophy, but the quality of your life and your ability to deal with the world around you. Don’t let that intimidate you, though. You have the best teachers in the world: the wisest philosophers who ever lived. And not only are you capable, the professor is asking for something very simple: just begin the work. The rest follows." - all above quoted words from the credited to the authors**

A Chat with A.S. King; Coming Face-to-Face with Those Who Judged
The Leftover Pieces; Suicide Loss Conversations
07/17/24 • 97 min
Today I am releasing a conversation that I had recently with Amy King - Grace's mom. Amy also happens to be an incredible writer and award-winning YA author (psst... see down below) But the role she cherishes most in life, is being a mom to her two kiddos... she now bothers, like many of us, from both sides of 'the veil'. Gracie died by suicide in 2018.
Amy's "other" episode _ Season 4 Ep. 3 "Suicide is Normal AND Tragic"
And today, just a few things we chat about are:
- First, she talks about her loss survivor group & how it has influenced her
- Coming face-to-face with a mom who had previously) judged her family - and how hearing her say it out loud - impacted her.
- The myths and realities of 'prevention' & stigma & shame...
- Meaningful conversations everywhere - incl. LGBTQA+ spaces...
- Living in a community where she is still 'targeted' and yet, her resolve is stronger than ever!
- Judgement, safe spaces, Gracie's House, soup and more ...
Speaking our truth, judgement, creating safe spaces & having meaningful dialogue with teens (& others in our community) are key takeaways here. Take good care good you, my friend!
"A.S. King has been called “One of the best Y.A. writers working today” by the New York Times Book Review. King is the author of highly-acclaimed novels including 2021's SW/TCH, 2020 Michael L. Printz Honor Book Please Ignore Vera Dietz among others. She also writes Middle Grade fiction as Amy Sarig King, including Attack of the Black Rectangles. She has edited an anthology of weird stories, The Collectors, which won the Michael L. Printz award in 2024, and will release a new YA novel, Pick the Lock, in fall 2024. In 2022, King received the Margaret A. Edwards Award for her significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature. In 2023, she accepted the ALAN Award from The Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of NCTE for her "artistry, courage, and outstanding contributions to the field of adolescent literature." She is a former faculty member of the Writing for Children and Young Adults MFA program at Vermont College of Fine Arts and spends many months of the year traveling the country speaking to high school and university students, educators, and humans who care about the mental health of young people.
