The Leader's Toolkit

The Sherpa Metaphor

There are a lot of examples of good leadership: teacher to student, coach to athlete, parent to child, etc. At GiANT, we searched the world over for a metaphor that would accurately describe the healthiest, most impactful type of leader in order to aspire team leaders to become intentional - the type of leader who is not only self-aware and performing at the highest levels, but also who intentionally passes on their expertise to those they lead so they too can become the highest performers.
The exercise from Episode 1 is called The 100X Leader Assessment. If you're serious about becoming a great leader, be honest and open about where you are as a leader, and get ready to start a leadership journey to become an intentional leader worth following.

001 Performing v. Leading Performers

The Leader's Toolkit Podcast

Whatever your profession or trade, you have a skillset or expertise. If you're a carpenter, an accountant, a teacher, a graphic designer, a CFO, etc you have a level of performance within your job. If you could put a number to grade yourself as to how well you are performing in your job, what would you score yourself? 1 (not good at all) to 10 (expert at your job).
Let's say, for example, that you say you are a "7" as a performer within your job/skillset. Now, you've been tasked with leading a team. If you could put a number to grade yourself as to how well you are a leader to your team, what would be your score? 1 (not good at all) to 10 (expert at your job).
Let's say, for example, that you say you are a "5" as a leader. So in this example, you are a 7/5. These are two separate skill sets. Just because someone excels at their profession or trade does not necessarily mean they are excelling at leading their team.
Now, do an exercise where you create circles on a sheet of paper representing every team within your organization. You are probably one of many team leaders. If you evaluate each team leader, you can ultimately get an overall "Performing" v. "Leading" score for the entire organization. (Depending on how large your organization is, you may not know every team leader).
The point of this exercise is to determine how you and the other team leaders within your organization are taking seriously the job of leading teams. See a visual graphic of the Performing v. Leading Exercise.
This podcast is for anyone who leads any kind of a team and wants to increase their leadership skillset. Listen episode by episode to gain insights, wisdom, tips, tricks and tools for becoming a leader worth following.

003 A Look in the Mirror

Show Notes - Episode 3
What if there was a mirror you could look at every morning before you started your work day --- a leader mirror? This mirror would allow you to see what your employees or those on your team see. What would would that mirror tell you?
In this episode we ask the question, "What's it like to be on the other side of me?" In other words, what's the experience for those you lead? How do they see you? How do they experience your leadership? And what if you look in this mirror when it comes to those you lead at home or in your community? What would your son or daughter say?
In this episode we explore these three questions:
1. Am I reactive or proactive?
2. Am I intentional or accidental?
3. Am Inconsistent or am I consistent?
We can't lead well until we take a good, hard look at ourselves.
