The Leaders Path

The Leaders Path

Tony Woodall

Hi Goal Getters. I am going to be changing the name and focus of the Goal Getting Podcast. I started the Goal Getting Podcast 10 years ago. I created content until 2017. A lot changed in my life since then. One of the biggest was walking across Spain on the Camino de Santiago in 2022. I thought it would be just an adventure to celebrate past successes and tell my mind and body that I could overcome the new physical challenges that had been presented to me. After I walked the Camino Frances in 2022, I had posed a couple of questions to the Camino. One of those was answered in the next six months. I was laid off from my job of 13 years and a very unexpected company crash, the 2nd largest bank failure in history. I went back and walked another Camino, the Portuguese, from Porto to Santiago de Compostela. While walking my second Camino and then 3rd in the same trip, I realized I wanted to start The Leaders Path, to guide people to find or reclaim their passion for a purposeful life. The Leaders Path includes goal setting and achievement, so that will be a part of the journey. There will be several areas I will be focusing on in our journey. The Leaders Guide to Goal Achievement will be one of the areas. I gained more insight on goal setting and achievement with OKRs, Objectives and Key Results and other insights learned from walking across two countries. I am now living my latest goal of being a digital nomad, slow traveling and working around the world. I will also be sharing The Leaders Path to Mental Fitness The Leaders Path to a Magical Morning The Leaders Path to Resilience and other topics to help you find and live your life of passion and purpose. If you are a subscriber, I hope you will continue being so as I create new content. This will be a work in progress as change my purpose here. You can find the old Goal Getting Podcast episodes on the YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@Goalgettingpodcast I will also have video content and show notes for new content on The Leaders Path YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@TheLeadersPathChannel

I like visualizing a lot, so the night before a competition and right before, I will visualize myself. I'll close my eyes, turn away from everybody, and just see myself doing exactly what I want to accomplish." -- Kacy Catanzaro

Kacy Catanzaro nicknamed The #MightyKacy, is the first woman to qualify for the finals of the American Ninja Warrior. I am a big fan of American Ninja Warrior. I love watching these athletes compete to be the first American to become a Ninja Warrior Champion. This is a tough competition and it takes special skills.

Athletes like #MightyKacy have to set goals and work hard to get to the level they are and compete in these events. This isn't just track and field, it isn't just lifting weights, it isn't just being muscular. You have to be fit! You have to be flexible, physically and mentally.

You have to use visualization to see yourself not only slapping that button on that last obstacle, but completing each and every obstacle perfectly. You have to see yourself doing EXACTLY what you want to accomplish, just like the #MightyKacy does. You can check Kacy Catanzaro out at her website www.kacycatanzaro.com/#kacycatanzaro On Twitter as @KacyCatanzaro and following #MightyKacy [bctt tweet=" I like visualizing a lot, so the night before a competition and right before, I will visualize myself. I'll close my eyes, turn away from everybody, and just see myself doing exactly what I want to accomplish. -- Kacy Catanzaro"] You can use the same skills that #MightKacy uses to visualize yourself doing EXACTLY what you want to accomplish.

Harvey Mackay

Click Below To Listen to Today's Show

You've probably heard of Harvey Mackay. Harvey Mackay is the author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller -

Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive: Outsell, Outmanage, Outmotivate, and Outnegotiate Your Competition among other titles.

Today's quote of the day is from Harvey Mackay

I believe that visualization is one of the most powerful means of achieving personal goals. -- Harvey Mackay

Harvey Mackay know about success and about achieving goals. As his quote states, he is a firm believer in using visualization. I, like Harvey, believe it is the most powerful means of achieving personal goals.

When I put "Visualize It" as one of the the 9 Steps To Successful Goal Achievement, my ebook, it is because it is essential to successful goal achievement. The Goal Getting, Don't Just Set'em, Get'em program teaches visualization techniques to help you set into your subconscious mind, the exact thing you are trying to achieve when you set your goals.

Do you use mediation or other visualization techniques? The subconscious mind is a powerful tool that we have for our use. Sometimes it can be negatively programmed with limiting beliefs and we have to change those to positive goal-oriented, success-conscious beliefs.

Visualization helps us do that.

Thinking about the process of achieving the goals we have set and imaging us doing them perfectly, executing them in our mind with unrelenting precision, will help us set the mind to believing that we can do it that way and that we can achieve the goals.

Would you like to learn some visualization techniques and meditations? I have done many visualizations myself, and most successful sports figures use these type of techniques to see themselves doing and winning the events the enter.

You can, too.

As we continue this series on Visualization, I will work on creating a Visualization Audio program that you will be able to download and use to start working on visualizing your goals. If you have a specific type of goal you are working on and would like to have the audio tailored to that specific type of goal, (for example, "Weight Loss", "Exercising", "Career Advancement"), let me know in the Comments Section.

Once I get the visualization audio files completed and ready for download, I will post on the Podcast Upgrades page and you can enter your email and we will sent it to you.

Wayne Gretzky

I skate to where the puck is going, not to where it has been. -- Wayne Gretzky

Walter Gretzky, Wayne's dad trained and instilled in him the mantra "Skate to where the puck is going, now where it's been.", while he was growing up.

Wayne Gretzky, nicknamed "The Great One", did what his father taught him. And, he has been the only hockey player that has been able to actually do that effectively.

The Great One's record is unmatched and he is one of the all-time best hockey players, EVER!

The Great One | Official Website

I believe that he was able to skate to where the puck was going because of visualization. I believe that in practices growing up, Wayne, worked on the advice his father gave him. Now, I am speculating here, but if you know Wayne, you can ask him to come on Goal Getting Podcast and explain it for us.

But with visualization, you want to imagine the puck where it will be going. This takes imagination AND a lot of work. Why work? I believe that he watched the way the pucks moved on ice, over and over again. Constantly watching how they moved when he hit them and when others hit them.

[bctt tweet="I skate to where the puck is going, not to where it has been. -- Wayne Gretzky"]

Know how the pucks work, you can then start using visualization to imagine the puck moving across the ice and see where it will end up. Knowing the possible trajectory of the puck and skating to where it will be and seeing yourself being there and what you do after you get there, prepares you for the times when it is there and then you can comfortably respond and do what you need to do.

You can do this because you have seen yourself doing it over and over again in your mind.

See yourself where you are going. See yourself being where you need to be. See yourself doing what you need to do when you are there. See yourself SCORE YOUR GOAL!

Richard Branson

Ideas are responsible for the progression and prosperity of humans – without them we would still be living in prehistoric times. No idea is too small, and all sorts of ideas have potential to change the world as we know it for the better. ~~ Richard Branson

This is our last in Richard Branson's Top 10 Quotes on Ideas. I don't think it's one of his top 10, but instead his quote describing the concept of ideas for his quote series. To me, however, I believe this is in itself a great quote.

It's a valid statement as well. Without people having ideas and more importantly, acting on those ideas, humans would still be in the stone age. As we discussed yesterday in Earl Nightengale's quote, "Everything begins with an idea."

There is no idea too small. The smallest thing can have a big impact. Ignaz Semmelweis in 1847 after research to determine why the mortality rate after surgery was so high, found that surgeons weren't washing their hands after each surgery. He started encouraging doctors to wash after each surgery. That small thing resulted in the mortality rate dropping from over 18% to just over 2% the next year.

As Richard Branson goes on to say,

". . . and all sorts of ideas have potential to change the world as we know it for the better."

Do you have an idea? "What If" your idea lead to an amazing change. What If your idea changed the world for the better. "What If " your idea just made your or your families life better.

Today is the day to start working on your idea. Don't keep it bottled up in your head or in that notebook on your desk. Don't leave it in that Word Document on your laptop.

Welcome to Season 2 of Goal Getting Podcast! This is Tony and I want to thank you for visiting Goal Getting Podcast. Today marks the One Year Anniversary of the launch of Goal Getting Podcast.

People may say we're crazy for trying to achieve our dreams. Has anyone told you that? People may call you names, say you are weird for trying to do what you want to do, right.

Today's quote from Rob Siltanen reminded me of these people. But, the best part of it reminded me of people like you and me.

Bruce Lee

I have a system of ridding my mind of negative thoughts. “I visualize myself writing them down on a piece of paper. Then I imagine myself crumpling up the paper, lighting it on fire, and burning it to a crisp'. -- Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee was one of my favorite heroes when I was young. Unfortunately, he died too young. But he left a lasting legacy for all martial artists and people that want to get the goals they set in general. There are many quotes attributed to Bruce Lee. This is one of my favorites.

Bruce Lee used visualization to help him clear his mind of limiting thoughts. The vision of seeing himself writing down his negative thoughts on paper and then crumbling them up is a very positive vision. But Bruce didn't stop there.

Bruce then took that crumpled up, wrinkled piece of paper and lit it on fire. That was a second way to get rid of the negative thoughts. But Bruce, in this exercise like most things he did, he took it further and watched it BURN TO A CRISP! That thought makes it so much more emphatic that you destroyed the negative, limiting beliefs.

How do you handle your negative thoughts? Do you visualize burning them, or cutting them out of your life? How do you get rid of those negative thoughts?

Let me know in the show notes at Goal Getting Podcast / qod48 - go to the comments section and tell my how you get rid of your negative thoughts. What are your most limiting thoughts you face?

[bctt tweet="The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking. ~ Albert Einstein"]

Thoughts become things

We are who we are because of what we think. The only way to change who or what we are is to change our thinking. One of my favorite websites is TUT.com and their motto is

Thoughts become things - choose the good ones.

This is very true. We are what we think. We are what we say we are. Negative self-talk is negative programming into our subconscious mind. When we are think about things, we should always be thinking positive, success-oriented thoughts. You have a choice over your thoughts. You control who you are by the thoughts you think. Choose the good ones. Go check out TUT.com and register for them to send you positive good thoughts to your inbox.

Today we will talk about starting our #WorkOnWellness journey. As we #WorkOnWellness, we are going to change our minds thoughts about what we want. We are going to talk about our goals for wellness

If you have your copy of the Goal Setting Worksheets I mentioned in our previous episode, follow along. If you need them, go to GoalGettingPodcast.com/action and pick them up. Pause the show now and go get them and when you come back we will get started.

OK, you have your worksheets. Let's look at the top of the page. As you see, we have three sections. These are the 3 Keys to Goal Setting Success.

This Goal Achievement Success System tool is designed to help you define The What, The How and The Why for each major goal you will set.

Today we are going to focus on The What - What do you want to achieve?

Did you set New Year's Resolutions? How's that working out for you? At the end of February, most people have already started to forget or quit their New Year's Resolutions. Why?

They didn't set them as goals. They just said they resolved to change or do something. As we get into the 3 Keys to Goal Setting Success, you will start to understand why they don't work.

Defining The What - what you want to achieve requires the following steps from the 9 Steps to Successful Goal Achievement.

  1. Write It Down
  2. Be Realistic
  3. Set A Deadline
Write It Down

Napoleon Hill explained in his book, Think & Grow Rich, that the most successful people of his time had Clearly Defined Written Goals. Most people don't write their goals down.

Most New Year's Resolutions are not written down. Most New Year's Resolutions are not clearly defined. What was your New Year's Resolution? Was it To Lose Weight? Was it To Live A Healthier Lifestyle? Was it to get a new job?

When we write our goals down, when we define The What, we want to use clearly defined speech. We want to be specific about what we want. I like to say "Specific is Terriffic". You will see that on the upper right corner of the worksheets. Specific is the S in SMART goals.

Be Realistic

Big Hairy Audacious Goals are important. Your goals should be set outside of your comfort zone. You want to dream big! You want to stretch yourself. You want to make it hard to achieve the goals.

But, you don't want to set unrealistic goals. Realistic is usually a time constraint or an ability constraint. If you set a goal to graduate from college in 1 year, that is probably unrealistic, for most people. Graduating from college is an achievable goal. Graduating in one year without having started any courses is not likely.

Your goals have to be achievable. Be Realistic is the A in SMART Goals as well as the obvious R. To me Realistic and Attainable are essentially the same thing. If they aren't attainable then it's usually unrealistic to assume you can achieve them. If the time frame you set to achieve them isn't a realistic time frame, than they would be unattainable. This is why we have only Be Realistic as one of the 9 Steps.

Set A Deadline

A dream without a deadline is only a wish! This is the T in SMART goals. T is typically set as Time-bound. You must have a defined time you are going to achieve your goal by. Creating a deadline puts a sense of urgency. It puts a finite end to what you are trying to accomplish. Without a deadline, there is no hurry to achieve. You will get to when you get to it. That's not a goal, that's a wish.

Let's Get Started Writing

Take out your Goal Setting Worksheet and a pen. Yes, I said a pen. You didn't think you were going to type it in did you?

We want to hand write our goals on the worksheet. We want to hand write them in cursive, in longhand....

Allyson Felix

I am a big believer in visualization. I run through my races mentally so that I feel even more prepared.

-- Allyson Felix "Who is Allyson Felix?", you might ask. One of the fastest women on the planet is the answer. Allyson competed in the 2012 London Olympics and is working on her return in Rio. I have not doubt she will make it. I watched her run in 2012 and was amazed at her form, her grace and her speed! I'm willing to bet she is already visualizing herself crossing the finish line with a new personal best. When you visualize yourself doing something, you want to make it your best every time. Allyson says in her quote that she runs through her races mentally so that she can feel prepared. When you do this, it allows the mind to be able to learn what to expect in every situation. Many athletes visualize all of the possibilities, including the things that can go wrong. They then are able to visualize how they will handle it and what they will do to continue to achieve the goal. This mental preparedness will make it easier for you to respond if it happens and you will be able to react quickly and confidently. You want to get the prize! You want to do your best time. You want to see your biggest paycheck. Whatever your goal is, you want to SEE You Doing It. You Can Do It!

Winston Churchill

Today's quote is part of Sir Richard Branson's Top 10 Quotes on Ideas. This quote is from another great Englishman, Sir Winston Churchill.

No idea is so outlandish that it should not be considered with a searching but at the same time a steady eye. – Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill was a great orator, leader and statesman. He was the right person for his time. And in his time, he had to have an attitude like this. With the troubles that Great Britain was suffering throughout World War II, it called for open mindedness on all ideas.

Churchill heard many ideas to help with the war effort. I can imagine that all of England was doing everything it could to help. Everyone would want to have the best idea to end the war, or save Britain, or defeat the enemy.

Do you think your ideas are outlandish? Have you stopped thinking about an idea because someone told you it was outlandish?

Well, according to Winston Churchill, all ideas, no matter how outlandish they seem, should be looked at and considered, but with some measurement.

Just because they seem outlandish doesn't mean they won't work.

Many great inventions, or products, or causes were laughed at and ridiculed as being outlandish. Many people that persisted and had the sense to review them, to check them out to look them over with a steady eye are now heroes, wealthy or great.

All because they didn't discount the idea simply because it was outlandish.

Your idea may be outlandish! It may seem far-fetched. It may sound crazy, at first! But, it may also be the next big thing.

Take your outlandish idea and make it into what you think it could be!

Thank you for listening to Goal Getting Quote of the Day! I appreciate you coming back and listening.
