Episode 159 - Wanting and Willingness

In this episode, I discuss the difference between wanting and willingness. I share personal experiences where I have learned to say no to things I don't want to do, in order to better understand my own desires.

However, I also emphasize the importance of being willing to do things even when we don't want to, through sacrifice. This willingness allows us to have ownership over our experiences.

I relate this concept to serving a mission, encouraging missionaries and returned missionaries to reflect on their own wants and needs, while also being willing to overcome challenges through sacrifice.

The LDS Mission Podcast - 163. Rewrite Your Script

163. Rewrite Your Script

Episode 163 - Rewrite Your Script In this episode, I share the powerful concept of rewriting your personal narrative to empower yourself.

I open by recounting a dramatic story from my past - a situation involving fraud, lawsuits, and financial turmoil that could have easily been the plot of a movie. This experience taught me that everyone has a unique story, and the way we tell that story can greatly impact our healing and growth.

I then share examples from my own life, including navigating my son's autism diagnosis and my daughter's major surgery, where I was able to reframe my perspective from victim to hero.

I want to encourage listeners to do the same - to identify difficult experiences from their past, whether on their mission or elsewhere, and consciously rewrite the script. Rather than seeing ourselves as weak or incapable, we can honor our courage, perseverance, and strength in overcoming challenges.

This can be a profound healing process that allows us to move forward and create the life we want. I close by discussing the importance of integrating our past experiences, rather than trying to simply "move past" them, as they have shaped who we are today.

In this powerful episode, I sit down with Braylen Bleak to discuss her experience of being sent home from her mission due to disobedience. This is a topic that is often not openly discussed, but Braylon's vulnerability and honesty provide invaluable insights.

Braylen shares her initial expectations of being the "perfect missionary" and the struggles she faced with perfectionism early on. She then courageously recounts the difficult decision to confess her mistakes to her mission president, the emotional pain of the repentance process, and the incredible support she received from her parents.

Through it all, Braylen's faith in the Atonement and her determination to remain strong in the gospel shine through. Braylen's story is a testament to the healing power of the Savior and the importance of facing our challenges head-on.

Her advice to others in similar situations - to trust in the Lord's plan and have the courage to walk the difficult path of repentance - is both inspiring and hopeful. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to better understand the complexities of the mission experience.

Braylen Bleak is from Laramie, Wyoming and a recently returned missionary. She is in school studying special education and elementary education, and runs her own photography business. The lyrics she shares on this episode are from the song Flowers - by Samantha Ebert

The LDS Mission Podcast - 131. Your Own Dickens Christmas Carol
play

12/22/23 • 32 min

In this episode, we explore the concept of the three versions of ourselves - past, present, and future. The inspiration for today's episode came from watching the movie "Spirited" after Thanksgiving. This movie has a modern take on Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol. The movie follows a similar storyline, where Ryan Reynold's character is visited by ghosts who try to redeem and change their ways.

To honor and appreciate our past selves. Be grateful for your past selves and acknowledge that you wouldn't be who you are without them.

We then move onto our present selves and future selves.

Overall, this episode explores the importance of honoring and appreciating each version of ourselves - past, present, and future - and I want encourage listeners to practice gratitude for their past selves and find joy in the present and hope for the future.

The LDS Mission Podcast - 170. Let's Talk About Shame

170. Let's Talk About Shame

The LDS Mission Podcast

Hey everyone, here on podcast episode 170, I'm excited to dive into the topic of shame in this episode. Shame is a complex emotion that many of us struggle with, especially during the unique experiences of serving a mission.

In this episode, I explore the differences between shame and guilt, highlighting how they can be intertwined yet distinct. I share insights from Brene Brown's research, outlining the four elements of shame resilience: recognizing shame, practicing critical awareness, reaching out to others, and speaking openly about shame.

By understanding shame as a natural human emotion, rather than something to be feared or avoided, we can learn to process it in a healthy way. I encourage listeners to approach shame with self-compassion, recognizing that we all experience it and that it doesn't make us inherently flawed or broken.

Throughout the episode, I emphasize the importance of normalizing the discussion around shame and other emotions. By sharing our experiences and supporting one another, we can reduce the isolation and shame that often accompanies these feelings. Whether you're preparing for a mission, currently serving, or a returned missionary, I hope these insights empower you to navigate the emotional landscape of the mission experience with greater understanding and resilience.

The LDS Mission Podcast - 174. When You're Asked to Teach

The LDS Mission Podcast

In episode 174 - When You're Asked to Teach, I share some important insights about creating a safe, loving environment when you are asked to teach, whether that's in a church setting, on a mission, or in any other context.

I emphasize the importance of moving away from a "quiz" mentality and instead fostering open conversations where everyone feels welcome to share their thoughts and experiences. I highlight the Savior's example of teaching each person according to their unique needs, and how we can emulate that by truly understanding where people are coming from before trying to teach them.

The goal should be to create an atmosphere of unconditional love and acceptance, where the Spirit can freely flow. I encourage listeners to evaluate their own teaching approaches and consider whether they are cultivating this kind of safe, uplifting environment. By doing so, we can help everyone feel inspired, supported, and able to contribute meaningfully to the conversation, just as the Savior did. The key is moving away from a focus on "right" and "wrong" answers, and instead opening up the dialogue for all to participate.

The LDS Mission Podcast

05/17/24 • 25 min

In this episode of the LDS Mission Podcast, I discuss the secret to "how" when it comes to navigating life's challenges and transitions. Whether it's preparing for a mission, college, or parenthood, most of us don't have a clear manual to follow.

However, we can overcome uncertainty by learning to manage our emotions, trust ourselves, and view life as a great experiment rather than a test. I encourage listeners to take the next small step towards their goals without needing to know the full path ahead of time.

Ultimately, we each discover the "how" through actively participating in life's experiments rather than waiting for clear instructions.

For anyone preparing for a mission or college, navigating post-mission life, or simply wanting to better handle life's uncertainties, I hope this podcast provides a fresh perspective on facing challenges through experimentation and self-compassion rather than expectations or tests.

My goal is to help listeners feel empowered to keep moving forward even when they feel unsure of the path ahead.

Hey everyone, it's Jennie Dildine here with another episode of the LDS Mission Podcast. On today's episode, I wanted to share some leadership tips that I've learned from my own experiences serving in various callings and leadership positions over the years.

I talk about the importance of recognizing that there are both "visionaries" and "implementers" on any team or project, and how each person brings a unique set of skills, talents, and perspectives. I also discuss some of the challenges that visionary leaders can face in forgetting the day-to-day realities of implementing a vision.

I provide over 10 specific tips for how visionaries can help implementers feel supported, valued and successful in their roles. Whether you're preparing to serve a mission, currently serving, or have already returned, I hope you'll find value in thinking about how to apply principles of empowering leadership.
