In episode 203 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with firefighter Dean Corney. Dean is also the co-founder of Walk & Talk 999, which is a men's walking group in the in the UK for any man in the emergency services to walk and talk about their mental health, if they want to, and be met with empathy, trust and understanding. The group was setup in 2018 by four women and two men, including Dean, who realised there weren’t any support groups for firefighters specifically to talk about their mental health. On 21st September 2021, the group did their first ever walk round a local park near their station and 11 brave men turned up. Since then, the group has grown exponentially, with 13 walking groups now setup across the UK. Because of its success, Dean operates the group full-time such is the level of expansion that’s taken place. The groups have now expanded to include any man from an emergency services background who can attend and they have had letters of praise from HRH Prince William, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and had support from celebrities like Dr Alex George and Joe Wickes. In this episode we discuss his journey into firefighting, the stress and strain that the job puts on men like him as well as the purpose it gives him when he has to save lives and the camaraderie amongst his fellow firefighters. We also discuss how, contrary to popular belief how the lionisation of firefighters from well-meaning friends, family or members of the public can actually put more pressure on men like him when it comes to disclosing when they are struggling with their mental health. For Dean’s mental health, 11 years ago he struggled with depression which developed into an eating disorder and he lost a huge amount of weight in a short period of time. We discuss the stigma he faced in the job and outside the job which prevented him from addressing it, seeking support and recovering, the progress he has made since then and the role he holds in helping other men like him. In episode 199 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with academic Dr Andrew George Thomas. Andrew is currently Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Swansea University, researching in the area of Evolutionary Psychology. Andrew did his BSc in Psychology at Cardiff university but moved to Swansea university for his PhD where he studied with Professor Steve Stewart-Williams. In order to fund his PHD, Andrew worked part-time and then full-time in the private sector before he managed to get his foot in the door in academia and has stayed there for the last seven years. Andrew is also the founder of blog ‘Darwin does dating’ where he writes about dating, relationships and the sexual marketplace through an evolutionary psychology lens. We came across Andrew through one of his tweets which said: “Don't make the mistake of assuming men have a similar experience to women in terms of receiving compliments, affection, touch. Compliment a man who isn't in the top 5% of desirability and chances are you'll have been the first person to do so for months...” In this episode we discuss all of the mental health angles around that tweet, his academic journey, social class, mating strategies, becoming a counsellor and the concept of ‘dysphoric singlehood’. Andrew was also involved in conducting the largest ever study of incels and we discuss what he and his team uncovered. For Andrew’s mental health, we discuss the mental health impact that a previous relationship break-up had on him which ended through his ex-partner being unfaithful as well as two separate but serious bouts of depression and anxiety which took place in around 2012 and 2016 respectively. We discuss those experiences, how he managed them and overcame them AND how he used them to train as a mental health counsellor and his attitude towards therapy and medication. 06/28/24 • 86 min

In episode 248 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Nick Gazzard. Nick is the CEO of the Hollie Gazzard Trust (HGT). The Trust was set up by him after the murder of his daughter Hollie, by an ex-boyfriend when she was just 20 years old. After that moment, Nick set up the Trust to try and stop what happened to Hollie from happening to anyone else ever again. The Trust helps reduce domestic abuse through creating and delivering programmes on domestic abuse and promoting healthy relationships. It delivers these programmes to schools, colleges, universities, police forces and other community groups. The ultimate aim of the Trust is to positively change the lives of young people through partnerships in communities, as well as working alongside other charities and professional agencies. In this episode we discuss Nick’s life as a professional footballer before an ACL injury ended his dreams of becoming one, fatherhood and his volunteering work for the Gloucestershire FA for 17 years. We then discuss Hollie’s life, her character, his favourite memories of her and the events which led up to her murder and death. We discuss the grief he and his family went through after Hollie's death and why he decided to use that huge trauma for the loss of his child and channel it into the Trust in her name which still exists today. We then discuss how men can spot the signs that someone they know may be either a perpetrator of domestic abuse or a victim, how we can intervene and take action and avoid being a bystander for abuse. We finish by discussing a stroke Nick went through in 2020 and how it forced him to create a better work-life balance for himself and take better care of his mental health. In the thirty-second episode of the Just Checking In Podcast we spoke to Headteacher of ThornHill Community Academy School in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, Matthew Burton. Matthew came into a bit of fame through a little show called ‘Educating Yorkshire’, which was broadcast on Channel 4 in September 2013, after which he became affectionately known as 'Mr Burton' to the wider public. The show focused on the day-to-day life of ThornHill Community Academy School in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire where he was an English Teacher, when the show was filmed. Stories focused on children and staff alike, from Year 9s struggling to manage school life to stressed-out Year 11s concentrating on their GCSE exams, teenage relationships, fights, bullying and one truly inspirational young lad called Musharaf. In this pod we talked about the show, how Matt, his colleagues and the students dealt with fame as well as Musharaf and the life-changing story which catapulted them both into the national spotlight. We also discussed his teaching journey to date, Matt's experiences of imposter syndrome and fatherhood, including his wife's miscarriage which occurred shortly before the filming of Educating Yorkshire took place. Also on the menu was COVID-19 and how it has affected his students lives, particularly GCSE and A-Level students, Matt's newly published book 'Go Big: The Secondary School Survival Guide' as well as his new podcast, 'Until Further Notice'. In episode 132 of The Just Checking In Podcast, we checked in with male detransitioner TullipR. Tullip is based in the UK and contacted us after our JCIP with Limpidă to share his story. Tullip started life as a very gender non-conforming child but struggled with being small and effeminate. He said he had a lot of internalised homophobia after coming to the realisation he was gay. Tullip suffered from intense and debilitating panic attacks from a very early age and was hospitalised with one when he was just 4 years old. Tullip admits he externalised the battle he was having onto other kids and was a bully in his primary school years. However, when he got to secondary school and he failed to develop in size and height like the rest of his peers, in a rough peer group, his effeminate nature and being small led him to being bullied and horrifically abused himself. When he was 10 years old, he was also spending a huge amount of time on his computer and began to go on internet chatrooms and was groomed by older men who sexually abused him online. By the time he was 13 years old he became an agoraphobe and he stopped going outside regularly for the best part of 15 years. Combining this with gender dysphoria, Tullip began to struggle immensely with his mental health. Tullip has a high diagnosed OCD and is still in the process of getting a diagnosis for autism. By the time he's in his early 20s, he is on trans chatrooms and asked other users if he was trans because of the symptoms he was experiencing. They affirmed him and he came out as trans and began the process to present as female. He became convinced that he needed gender reassignment surgery. However, this went horribly wrong. Despite the doubts he had about the surgery, he thought that if he didn’t do this, he would die. The surgery had huge complications and he has now been left without gonads and may be on HRT for the rest of his life. His urethra was constricted and shortened through three separate surgeries and he must live with the complications of this forever. We discuss all of this and more in our conversation with Tullip. 02/14/24 • 95 min

In episode 228 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with George Mycock. George is the Founder of MyoMinds and a mental health advocate for awareness of Muscle Dysmorphia (MD). MyoMinds mission is to demystify mental health for exercisers and athletes and to create an understanding future for the exercising community. Through research, public talks and their podcast, they work with universities, schools and other public institutions to change the conversation around Muscle Dysmorphia. In this episode we discuss George’s experience of Muscle Dysmorphia, which some listeners may know by the term ‘bigorexia’. Muscle Dysmorphia is a form of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), which is defined by: “Being preoccupied by worries that one's body is “too small” or “not muscular enough” despite having a normal build, or in many cases, an objectively extremely “buff” physique.” It can cause the person to create obsessive rituals, behaviours and a mindset that can cause serious psychological distress. In its most extreme form, it can also put that person in extreme danger physically and mentally. George began experiencing MD after he suffered a spinal injury when he was 13 whilst he was playing rugby, a sport he loved and which he had built his identity around. He was told never to play rugby again and was signed off school for a year. After he returned, he suffered an identity crisis and began exercising and bodybuilding heavily in order to rebuild his identity. Unfortunately, through this, he developed MD (which hasn’t been officially diagnosed) and eventually got to the point where he became suicidal and was only saved because by a coincidental miracle. One of his best friends happened to visit his house and she supported him, listened to him and encouraged him to seek professional support. He did that, worked through the issues the MD had given him and has now changed his life, founded MyoMinds and has done some brilliant advocacy work. This includes participating in a LadBible roundtable on Eating Disorders, which included friend of the pod Danny Bowman, Miles Nazaire’s Channel 4 documentary on muscle dysmorphia and many other pieces of work. In this episode we discuss his mental health journey, from avid rugby player, to obsessive bodybuilder and now mental health advocate, how he built his self-esteem pyramid through therapy, what ‘vulnerable narcissism’ is and how we can spot the signs that someone may be experiencing muscle dysmorphia.
