Helpful Through Family Ties: GU272 Descendants Association
The Joy of Membership Podcast
08/18/20 • 16 min
One of my personal goals as I created this podcast format was to bring forward stories of value being created by mission-driven organizations covering a diverse array of topic areas, membership sizes and types, geographic location, and length of service. As part of this podcast, you’ll hear from organizations that have been working toward their mission for decades, but you’ll also hear from some that are very new.
That’s the situation today. The GU272 Descendants Association is very new as a formal association, but their mission and the impact of their work? .... Well, that spans generations.
Join me for this conversation with Rochell Sanders Prater, the association’s Vice President of Membership.

And she's approachable and results-oriented, which makes it easy to shake loose of the old and start fresh on the new.
Helpful with Sacred Cows: Dr. Stephan Meyer
The Joy of Membership Podcast
09/24/20 • 19 min
Have you ever heard the phrase “sacred cow”? In a business context, a sacred cow refers to an idea, custom, or belief that an organization resists questioning or criticizing. Sometimes holding onto such ideas without questioning them can hold an organization back from being able to create change that is necessary to survival.
Today’s guest is Dr. Stephan Meyer who received his PhD last November for his research into sacred cows and organizations, but he’s actually been working on change-related projects in his career for more than 25 years. In a world now where every organization is trying to find a new path forward, it seemed like the perfect time for this conversation with Stephan. I hope you enjoy listening in.

Helpful through Certification: Register of Professional Archaeologists
The Joy of Membership Podcast
10/29/20 • 20 min
Dr. Deb Rotman has been an active teacher, scholar, and practitioner of archaeology for more than 25 years and has a broad knowledge of both academic archaeology and CRM. When she joined the faculty of the University of Notre Dame in 2006, Deb wanted to understand how a university with a French name became the Fighting Irish. Answering this question became the focus of her research on Irish immigration in both the US and Ireland. In 2015-2016, Deb was a Fulbright US Scholar to the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in Castlebar, County Mayo, where she lectured and researched the lifeways and cultural practices of rural Irish-Catholics before they emigrated to the US. Recently, Deb became the Executive Director of the Register of Professional Archaeologists where she facilitates the certification and professional development of practicing archaeologists in the US and internationally.

Helpful with Digital Marketing (Part 1): Feathr
The Joy of Membership Podcast

Abhay Khurana is a marketing professional, podcast host, and father of five. As the Chief Marketing Officer of Feathr – a marketing technology company that specializes in working with associations – he leads the content, creative, partnerships, and demand generation functions of Feathr's business.
I started seeing Feathr pop up more over the past year in the discussion forums for the American Society of Association Executives, then one day an email popped into my inbox that sparked this collaboration.
This week’s conversation will be with Abhay, but then next week, you’ll hear the story of one of Feathr’s customers, the California Pharmacists Association and what they’ve been able to do to enhance their outreach with this digital marketing platform.
I hope you enjoy this quick introduction to Abhay and the work that he’s doing to help associations at Feathr.

Helpful with Digital Marketing (Part 2): California Pharmacists Association
The Joy of Membership Podcast
02/18/21 • 15 min
Sheila Johnston spends her day managing the membership, communication, and day-to-day administration of the California Pharmacists Association. She attributes the success that she’s experienced in her 19-year career working in the industry to the extra effort that she places on understanding the people her organization serves, so that what she produces in marketing can replicate their voices.
In this podcast episode, Sheila will share how she’s leveraged the digital marketing platform Feathr as a way to connect with current and prospective members. Of course, if you missed last week’s conversation with Abhay Khurana, the Chief Marketing Officer of Feathr, you’ll want to go back and give that a listen.

Helpful with Expanding to National: Brian Fried
The Joy of Membership Podcast
03/25/21 • 25 min
Do you ever watch an episode of Shark Tank and wonder how the heck someone who seems just like a regular person came up with some random idea for a product, and then was able to figure out how to do all the things that are necessary to get the thing designed, to navigate patents, to find manufacturers, etc? I definitely do! If that person was lucky, they know someone like this week’s guest. Brian Fried is a serial inventor who has brought many of his inventions to the mass retail market. “As seen on TV”? Brian’s been there. Home Shopping Channels? Yep, been there, too. Catalogs and online websites? You betcha.
But that’s not today’s story. Today’s conversation is about the work that Brian has been doing to take local inventor groups and turn them into a national model. I want you to notice how attuned he has been to 2 things: 1) understanding exactly what his members need from the Club; and 2) leveraging strategic partnerships to create win-win situations. These two things can make a huge difference in whether your member experience will attract members quickly, get them to engage enthusiastically, and keep them coming back for more.

Helpful for Nurses: Foot & Nail Institute
The Joy of Membership Podcast
05/06/21 • 19 min
This week’s guest will always hold a very special place in my heart not only because she’s just a true gem of a human being, but also because her organization, The Foot and Nail Institute, was the very first organization to go live on the JourneyCARE platform. As a nurse, Heather has always had an affection for helping others. She combined her passion for nursing to help the aging population with her 1st company Everyday Divinity by delivering routine foot care services to seniors. Now she is building a community of nurses who help seniors in the same way - by starting and growing their own foot care businesses. Using JourneyCARE, Heather has been able to automate many of the processes that she needs to successfully run her membership and warmly engage those she aims to attract.Connect with Heather:

My guest this week is Bruce Bro, President of the National Foundation for Danish America. There are approximately 1.5 Million Americans who claim at least partial Danish heritage and call themselves “Danish Americans”.
NFDA is a nonprofit organization, formed in 2019 to help Danish American organizations network, coordinate, share and collaborate all in an effort to preserve and promote the Danish culture and heritage in America.
As the Foundation’s President, Bruce recently asked “how can we be helpful?” and he came up with a rather unusual answer. That’s what he’s here today to talk about.
