...."If a tree falls in a forest and nobody puts it on LinkedIn, did it really happen?"

Josh Wilson 00:00:00 What do you think in the world of investor relations? What is the most critical piece for a public company? Once they're once they're public? What do you think is so important, especially maybe pushing through the LinkedIn audience?
Seth Farbman 00:00:13 You know, I think they have to be authentic. I think as a public company, investors like to know that that CEO is out there hustling, working for their money, not just sitting behind the desk. And so take them on the journey with you. you know, you had mentioned that we met at the Geneva conference. There were so many times where somebody will a CEO will attend the conference, they'll sponsor a conference, they'll have an exhibit, they'll go and they'll come back. And. And I always joke about the analogy like, if a tree falls in a forest and nobody puts it on LinkedIn, did it really happen? So, like, why aren't these guys taking advantage of that, like promote the fact that you're going to be attending, that you're going to be speaking, invite people to connect with you, you know, do a post about how it went or showing you up there as an authority because you want to you want to use all that storytelling power to present yourself as a thought leader and really whatever category you're in.
Seth Farbman 00:01:09 So I think that from a PR standpoint, many people go public, put out a press release, they sit back and think that, hey, you know, it's going to take care of itself. But we live in a very, you know, noisy world where in order to cut through that, there's no one switch. You know, you've got to do road shows, you've got to do, social media, you've got to do conference circuits, you've got to do, you know, a little bit of everything to really to really get get your name out there.

Choosing the Right Investor Relations Path: Hiring vs. Developing In-House

In the realm of investor relations (IR), companies often grapple with a critical decision: whether to hire an external IR agency or to develop an in-house team. Determining the right path depends on several factors, most notably cost and the company's development stage. Let’s explore how businesses can find the right balance.

Assessing Company Needs and Resources

According to industry experts, the stage of a company plays a significant role in this decision. Start-ups or early-stage companies, which often have limited internal resources, might find it more beneficial to engage an external IR agency. By doing so, they gain access to a full spectrum of resources and expertise that an in-house team may not yet possess.

Understanding the Cost Dynamics

Cost is a pivotal element in deciding between an in-house team and an agency. If a company aims to have an expert IR resource internally, they should expect to invest significantly—typically around $350,000 or more per year for a proficient and experienced professional. This cost can be prohibitive for many, thus prompting the consideration of external agencies.

The Value of External Expertise

Hiring an IR agency comes with the advantage of gaining seasoned professionals who bring extensive experience and comprehensive support. Agencies often offer a multifaceted approach, complete with additional features and innovations that a single internal hire may not provide. This “hired gun” option can be especially valuable when looking to enhance the company’s visibility and credibility in investor circles.

Striking the Right Balance

Ultimately, the choice between hiring an agency and developing in-house capabilities hinges on aligning business objectives with available resources. Companies should weigh the costs against potential gains in expertise, breadth of service, and overall impact on investor relations strategies.

By carefully evaluating these factors, businesses can make a thoughtful decision that supports their growth and strengthens their connections with investors.

The Investor Relations Podcast - The Role of Executives in Corporate Social Media
play

Seth Farbman I think it's more of a lack of just focus on it, and it could be something as silly as, you know, you and I meet at a conference. First thing I'm going to do is Google your name. I don't even have the patience very often to go to the website about us, who we are. I've already, like, gotten bored. I'm just going to Google your name and the first thing that comes up is your LinkedIn profile. And, you know, it's it's comical when the CEO of of a large company has as his profile him and his dog. I mean, again, no offense to the pet lovers or if it's a group photo, right? Him and his buddies, him and four guys.
I don't know which is him and which is his friend. Like, small things like that make a big difference. I'm still to this day shocked at how many publicly traded companies have spent millions. Right. To get to that point. Ring the Nasdaq bell. Break out the champagne. But yet, on their LinkedIn profile, they don't say, hey, we're a public company, we're on Nasdaq. Here's our ticker symbol. It's just a lot of lost opportunity that I think a lot of companies can can focus on. And if they don't have the time to do it themselves and hire a team. But, but those are the things that we see a lot.

The Investor Relations Podcast - Strategic Approach to IR for Small Cap Companies
play

04/23/25 • 1 min

A Thoughtful Strategy for Investor Relations in Small Cap Companies
Navigating investor relations (IR) for small cap companies requires more than just immediate outreach. It demands a strategic approach that prioritizes long-term relationships with shareholders. This is how a calculated strategy can transform the perception and success of these companies.
### Deep Dive into the Company and Industry
Effective IR begins with a comprehensive understanding of the company. Instead of rushing into external engagement, an IR agency should first converse with executives and department heads to grasp the inner workings, products, services, and culture. A nuanced understanding of the competitive landscape and industry dynamics is equally critical. This knowledge ensures authentic representation and strategic positioning of the company.
### Customizing Engagement Materials
Following this foundational insight, the focus shifts to crafting tailored materials—developing a strategic slide deck, drafting precise press releases, and revising the company’s boilerplate. These elements, created in collaboration with the company’s marketing and executive teams, must reflect both the company's objectives and market realities.
### Strategic Market Positioning
Positioning within the industry landscape involves understanding market perceptions regarding the company’s strengths and areas for growth. Through informal market inquiries and feedback, an IR agency can advise on strategic shifts to enhance the company’s market image and investor appeal.
In summary, a deliberate approach to IR—grounded in thorough company comprehension and strategic material creation—can foster sustainable shareholder connections and pave the way for lasting success in the competitive market of small cap companies.

The Investor Relations Podcast - Guidelines for Selecting an IR Partner

Guidelines for Selecting an IR Partner

The Investor Relations Podcast

The Key to Finding a Trusted IR Partner for Your Small Cap Company

Navigating the investor relations (IR) landscape can be a daunting task for small to mid-cap companies. Selecting the right IR agency involves understanding your company's specific needs and ensuring the agency can meet these requirements both now and in future scenarios. Josh Wilson and Jordan Darrow provide valuable insights into selecting the ideal IR partner.

Understanding Expectations for an IR Agency

When you're at the helm of a small to mid-cap company, it's crucial to set clear expectations for what you need from an IR agency. Josh Wilson emphasizes starting with trust. Choose someone who is highly recommended, not just by a single source but by multiple respected voices within the industry. This approach helps establish a baseline of reliable service, as it's more effective to gauge the agency's reputation by consulting several parties rather than relying on a sole reference.

Identifying Common Denominators

Jordan Darrow offers practical advice to streamline your selection process, highlighting the importance of identifying common denominators across recommendations. Engage with multiple professionals to discover which agency is frequently endorsed by credible sources. A collective recommendation can often point you in the right direction.

Assessing Broad Spectrum Skills

Once you have shortlisted potential IR partners, delve deeper into their expertise. A comprehensive understanding of the investment community is crucial. Darrow stresses the necessity of an agency possessing a wide range of capabilities. Ensure they are equipped to handle not only networking and investment community outreach but also internal corporate governance and the articulation of your investment thesis with appropriate valuation skills.

Continuity and Growth

One of the key considerations in selecting an IR agency is their ability to grow with your company. Switching agencies can be disruptive; therefore, choosing a partner that can satisfy both current and future requirements is essential. Darrow suggests verifying their competency in areas beyond immediate needs to avoid potential gaps in knowledge or skills that could hinder your company's growth.

Conclusion

For small to mid-cap companies, selecting the right IR agency is a decision that requires careful thought and consultation. By following the guidance of professionals like Josh Wilson and Jordan Darrow, companies can find an IR partner that not only fits their current criteria but also adapts to future demands. Ultimately, the right partner will be a trusted ally in navigating the complexities of investor relations.

The Investor Relations Podcast - Personal vs. Corporate LinkedIn Profiles: Which Should You Prioritize
play

03/13/25 • 1 min

Josh 00:00:00 In LinkedIn. There's the the personal profile which everybody has. And then there's sometimes there's a corporate profile or someone just types it in and it doesn't even point to a page or something or a page not found. What's the importance of having maybe a corporate and a personal and how do you leverage both?
Seth 00:00:17 I think you do need both. And you raise a good point where so many times there are dead links and it doesn't take you to the right place. So, you know, that's definitely something that I highly suggest people make sure are in working order. But you touched on a great point, because often people that we speak with say that I have a corporate profile, so I don't really need to work on my personal one. Let me just provide you with, you know, two very tangible takeaways that, answer this question. Number one is you would agree, people want to do business with people. They want to know the face behind the company. And so if I see a great corporate profile with good content, but it's just a logo, I'm not going to be as inclined to reach out to them and start a relationship, because I don't know who's behind it.
Seth 00:01:01 The personal profile, you can organically target the exact audience that you want to. So like, for example, I had a guy that was in the medtech world and had a brain, a brain device, and he wanted us to connect him to every neurosurgeon in the country. You can be very proactive as opposed to the corporate profile where you don't have that ability.
