DISASTER RELIEF WITH FILIPINO BUSINESS ft. Ainna | E06

06/18/21 • 40 min

The Insight Out

"Would you rather get Ube Pandesal from the bakery, or the buns that your Lola has just made?" (Escueta, 2021)
Definitions:

  • Ube = Purple Yam that originates from the Philippines; earthy and starchy flavoured;
  • Pandesal = Common Filipino bread using local flour, making the bread softer from it's inspiration, the French baguette;
  • Lola = Tagalog term for 'Grandmother'

Ainna Escueta is a junior-year Philippines university student that had returned to Hong Kong due to the COV19 pandemic. Her connection with her home country amidst its struggles, mixed with eagerness to help had conceived "The Phil-Kong Project": a filipino-for-filipino community that aims to support the social mobility of both Filipino and Hong Kong small businesses that are forced to limit operations. Ainna and I revisit how she started this project and explore how charity/ social work is facing negative feedback due to a skewed perception.

PHOTOGRAPHY SHIFT FROM AVIATION ft. Hans | E05

"I like taking pictures of people - not in a creepy way. It's just interesting to the human eye when they see faces." (Martin, 2021)
Hans Martin found his footing in photography through the joy in family events, and needing a tangible product to mark these occasions. Though initially trained to be a pilot, he took off exploring the world of multimedia - self learning photography, videography and cinematography. Hans and I roll out his passion story, how it continues to unfold and understand how gritty the life of a freelance photographer is.

"FOODIE" BEHIND THE ALGORITHM ft. Bryan | E07

"The first step is to call myself out. I will admit from the get-go: I am uncultured ... It's a balance of matching what I know [about food] with what I don't know and how I can bring that together. " (Chavez, 2021)
Bryan Chavez is a Hong Kong based English Teacher whom spends his leisure finding eatery gems around the city. Not only does he use his 'pun prowess' but his finite knowledge of culture and narrative, to connect with the owners/staff of the eateries he visits. Bryan and I affirm that aligning with another person's cause transcends any transactional agreement. It is this idea that helped him create community that recognises, respects, and recommends his reviews to others.
