What a chaotic opening weekend for the 2022-23 American Hockey League season. From power outages to incredibly hot starts by rookies, there was plenty of action, and we talk about it all in episode 38 of The Holy GrAHL podcast. Join hosts Jeremy Paul, Zack Power, Andrew Rinaldi, Corey Swartz, and Deana Weinheimer as they present an equally chaotic show. What do fate and mayonnaise have to do with this episode? That’s the burning question.

First, we have to discuss the power outage that interrupted the home opener for the Utica Comets and the visiting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Corey gives you all the details of the postponed restart.

In news of the week, we celebrate Austin Czarnik‘s American Hockey League Player of the Week nod and discuss the first suspension of the season, which was handed out to Mitchell Stephens. Finally, we highlight some franchise firsts as the Calgary Wranglers and Coachella Valley Firebirds played their first game (and scored the first goals) in their franchise history.

After a round of Swipe Left/Swipe Right involving goalie fights, mascots, and reminiscing about a particular fascinating day in AHL app lore, it’s time for some AHL fantasy hockey.

Using a random wheel generator and some helpful advice from their co-hosts, each host picked their starting lineup in a segment we call the Wheel of Fate.

To wrap up the show, the guys highlight the divisional standings after opening weekend and make their pick for the game of the week.

Jeremy takes us home in the mascot-inspired bonus round.

01/20/22 • 89 min

Welcome to The Holy GrAHL, Field Pass Hockey’s newest podcast. They cover the week behind and ahead for all four AHL divisions. From news to looking ahead at the following weeks’ worth of games, The Holy GrAHL has it all!

On the 14th episode of The Holy GrAHL, the crew enjoys a breath of relief in the news cycle following the madness of postponements the last few weeks. They discuss Filip Král’s recent surge that earned him Player of the Week honors and celebrate a delayed goal by Rochester Americans rookie sensation Jack Quinn. The crew also welcome Eric Staal back to the AHL with a bang.

Then, they reflect on Willie O’Ree’s trailblazing in the hockey world and his exemplary character as an ambassador for the game following his jersey retirement ceremony.

Quinn’s goals – four of them to be exact – still weren’t enough to pull his Americans away from falling into our “Oof of the Week,” and the crew discuss the once star-studded Americans now struggling through a competitive North Division.

The hot takes on “Swipe Left, Swipe Right” cover everything from a European-inspired point system to playoff implications and the return of a former popular franchise.

In the scoring races and the Quest for the Holy Grail, they discuss who moved up, who moved down, and which teams need to get going. Our hosts discuss Stefan Noesen’s huge weekend to give the Chicago Wolves the top three-point scorers in the league.

Michael joins the team late in our segment in the first appearance of all five hosts on a single episode in the running of the podcast!

The full-strength podcast then breaks down their games of the week in each division and finishes up with a bonus round inspired by the Wolves’ top point producers that – shockingly – features more Chicago Wolves.

The four hosts are back in episode 70 of Field Pass Hockey’s American Hockey League podcast, The Holy GrAHL. Join your hosts Zack Power, Andrew Rinaldi, Deana Weinheimer and Corey Swartz as they open the doors to the 2023 Calder Cup Finals.
