The Holderness Family

Welcome to the Holderness Family Podcast! On Facebook and YouTube we are known as The Holderness Family. We make those silly songs and skits with our kids, but on this podcast, it's just us... the real us. The non-Christmas-jammies-us, the why-can't-my-socks-be-on-the-kitchen-counter-us (Penn) the why-do-I-have-to-go-outside-and-talk-to-people-us (Kim). On this podcast, we will share the real-life ups and downs of living together, working together, raising kids together, in what we hope is a funny and entertaining way. We will be taking questions that we are likely unqualified to answer (absolutely unqualified to answer) but we are hoping that the show will make all of your beautiful families realize you're not alone. The Holderness Family Podcast - Changing How We Talk About Death with Hadley Vlahos, RN
play

09/12/23 • 32 min

Penn and I have had our fair share of interactions with hospice as our loved ones grow older. There are so many people who don’t always have access to hospice care in the way they would like. But one thing I do know, the nurses who care for us in our final days are a special breed. One of these special nurses is Hadley Vlahos, a registered nurse devoted to hospice care.

Hadley (or Nurse Hadley as she is known online) recently wrote a New York Times best-selling book The In-Between: Unforgettable Encounters During Life's Final Moments and she joined us on this week’s podcast. She writes about the life lessons she gained from her patients and the phenomenon of “the in-between.” These are the days where it seems people have one foot here on Earth, and the other somewhere else. It turns out, you can learn a lot about living from the dying. We talk to Hadley about some of her stories in the book, our own experiences, and her efforts to change the way we die with her non-profit, Hadley House.

The Holderness Family Podcast - The Silver Linings of Menopause with Dr. Kourtney Sims
play

12/06/22 • 52 min

While we typically only hear the dreadful things about menopause, I’m happy to report that there are actually silver linings to this stage of life. Lately I’ve been feeling a little bit like I’m going crazy. My anxiety has been elevated and I’ve been on edge. Maybe that’s why when I saw Dr. Kourtney speaking on TikTok, her words about hormones struck me. Could this be what’s making me feel like this?

We invited Dr. Kourtney Sims, M.D. to join our podcast to educate us, and, after our discussion, Penn and I agreed that anyone that is a woman or lives with a woman would benefit from hearing this information. While some symptoms of menopause are less than desirable, Dr. Kourtney explains that we don’t need to think of it as something that we must suffer through. What did you think of our discussion? You can learn more about Dr. Kourtney here: https://www.drkourtney.com/

About the Holderness Family : Penn, Kim, Lola, and Penn Charles Holderness create original music, parodies, and Vlogs for YouTube and Facebook to poke fun of themselves and celebrate the absurdity in circumstances most families face in their day to day life. They published "Christmas Jammies" in December 2013 and life hasn't been the same. Since then, their popular parodies, "All About That Baste", "Baby Got Class," and original music "Snow Day" have received national news coverage. Penn, the Dad, took a chance and left his job as a news anchor to join his wife Kim, the Mom, at their video production and digital marketing company, Greenroom Communications, LLC. Lola and Penn Charles are always happy, respectful and eat all of their vegetables (that last sentence is a lie).

The Holderness Family Podcast - Striving For Body Neutrality with Anne Poirier
play

01/23/24 • 57 min

*This podcast talks about weight loss and issues surrounding body image*

I love the sentiment around body positivity today. Models of all sizes cover magazines, and performers in larger bodies headline tours. But I don't know if I will ever get there. I grew up in the 90s where being thin was socially rewarded. It wasn't until I met Penn that I realized how you look doesn't have an impact on how you're loved or what you are capable of accomplishing.

I talk more about this in a recent blog post, but it got me thinking... do I have to be body positive? Is body neutral an option? Enter expert Anne Poirier to talk to us about what it means to be body neutral and actionable ways we can give gratitude to these amazing bodies we have. Learn more about Anne and the work she is doing here: https://shapingperspectives.com/

True story, when Penn first got diagnosed with ADHD in the mid-90s, his doctor handed him a book called Driven To Distraction. It was a brand new book by Dr. Ned Hallowell about ADHD and it was groundbreaking at the time. Penn's doctor encouraged him to read it to understand his brain. Penn said, "Great!" And then he proceeded to leave it in the backseat of his car... forever. This week we come full-circle and interview the ADHD OG, Dr. Ned Hallowell on the perception of ADHD, what we should do for ADHD caretakers, and life coaching works. You can learn more about Dr. Ned and his new book, ADHD 2.0, here: https://drhallowell.com/.

The Holderness Family Podcast - Helping Kids (And Us) with Failure with Michelle Icard
play

09/05/23 • 41 min

I am constantly wavering about being proud of my kids for good grades and feeling overwhelmed with how much work they have to do. The same goes for sports as I’m the loudest one cheering on the sidelines, but sometimes brought to tears when they have a hard loss. We wanted to discuss how to deal with setbacks, so we brought Michelle Icard onto the podcast to tell us how to turn failures into character-building moments, something she lays out in her new book, 8 Setbacks That Can Make a Child a Success.

We talk about teen archetypes, the value of having a poker face, and the 3-step approach for problem solving common failures. It’s important to schedule a time to talk, share your own mental health journey, and try to keep your face emotionally uninvested as your kid shares their feelings. Ask a question or just say hi, by calling 323-364-3929 or emailing us at [email protected]. If you like this podcast please consider leaving us a review!

The Holderness Family Podcast - What We're Getting Wrong About Youth Sports with Dr. Nicole Detling
play

11/21/23 • 48 min

Penn and I are no strangers to sports. We both enjoy playing recreationally, watching matches, and our kids are competitive too. There’s so much to admire about professional athletes. But what can we learn from them? This week we have world-renowned sports psychologist, Dr. Nicole Detling, on the podcast to talk about how to get our heads into a winning mindset.

Dr. Nicole has consulted athletes for 25 years, including Olympic and Paralympic medalists, world champions, professional athletes in the PGA, MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL as well as professional rock climbers, road cyclists, mountain bikers, and water skiers. Professional athletes are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. In Dr. Nicole’s experience, these individuals have higher levels of commitment and perseverance. We discuss how we can get in the zone in our everyday lives, as well as the pros and cons of youth sports. You can learn more about Dr. Nicole's practice here: https://www.headstrongconsulting.com/

The Holderness Family Podcast - Is It Too Late To Change My Parenting? with Dr. Hope Seidel
play

02/20/24 • 50 min

I am pretty sure I didn’t do “gentle parenting” with my kids. To be clear, Penn and I don’t really have to discipline our children. They are wonderful kids and on their way to be amazing adults. But when they were toddlers having a tantrum, I can’t say that I was gentle. But should I be? Is it too late to change my parenting? Enter our dear friend, Dr. Hope Seidel, a parenting coach and pediatrician. When I posed this question to Dr. Hope, she responded: “Why do you think you need to change, Kim? Because a book told you so?”

This is why I need Dr. Hope in my life and why I am so glad she joined our podcast discussion this week. She reminded us that it’s important to ask yourself: What am I hoping my kids will be, and am I creating a home that promotes that vision? This week we did a whole episode about relatshes (our funny way of abbreviating relationships) in honor of Valentine's Day! We talk about how we met each other, we hear how some of you met each other, and for any of you single folk out there, we talk about where to find love. Oh, and we discuss how every love story in a rom-com movie is built on a lie. Happy Valentine's Day (or whenever you're listening to this!)

We’ve all done it – looked into our dog’s eyes and wished we knew what they were thinking. We enlisted the help of our dear friend, Victoria Stilwell. She is the dog-training mastermind behind the hit show It’s Me or the Dog, the Victoria Stilwell Academy, and many other projects. She’s a big deal in the dog-training world and we were so excited to have her on this week’s podcast.

I have a really hard time ever calling something a failure. For me, even if something doesn’t go as well as I had hoped, I always learn and grow from the situation, which, I think, is a good thing! If you are making a choice about something, it is totally okay to not know exactly what you are doing or how to do it because then you can learn and grow. Even if you feel like you aren’t succeeding in the way you thought, life has a way of teaching you things you can use later. Or maybe you will succeed more than you ever thought. Nobody knows, but getting started is the first step.
