You might imagine we've lost our minds here at The Hobcast Book Show with an episode title like this, but, believe it or not, it's a common Icelandic phrase, such is the power and popularity of literature there. Our guest this week is one of the most influential figures in Icelandic fiction, Jónína Leósdóttir. Jónína is a playwright, journalist, and author of twenty-one books. Her most recent book, Deceit, is her sixth crime novel. She was also the founder of the Women's Prize for Fiction in Iceland. As we discuss in this wide-ranging interview, Jónína is no stranger to having to withhold the truth; it was 15 years before her relationship with her now wife, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir became public. Johanna was Iceland's Prime Minister between 2009 and 2013, and the world's first openly LGBT+ in modern history. This is an inspiring interview.

Also this week, Adrian and Rebecca absorb the impact of changes at Amazon, and discuss if a book's formatting and type-setting should really be a factor in a reviewer's rating?

There's no doubt that editing can make a huge difference to any finished work of fiction or non-fiction. Our guest this week, Abbie Rutherford, describes her move from social worker to copy editor and proofreader as a mixture of necessity and fulfilling her passion too. Abbie now one of the UK's most established editors, and specialises in crime fiction from her home base in Sunderland. In this wide-ranging interview, we discuss the impact on AI on the publishing world, and how authors need to do more work on their manuscripts before they send them off to their editors.

Also this week, Adrian reflects on his visit to the world's biggest podcast show in London, and we discuss the news that the big publishers are finally acknowledging that with costs rising fast, the price of books will also have to rise to reflect the new situation.

The Hobcast Book Show - 116: From the outside in - with Louise Mangos
play

04/10/23 • 67 min

If there's one genre that has dominated the mystery and suspense market in recent years, it is psychological suspense and thrillers. Our guest this week, Louise Mangos, has built a strong reputation in the genre, with three novels published to date. Louise is, like no less than four of our own Hobeck authors, a graduate of the Crime Fiction MA at the University of East Anglia. That gave her the foundations of her writing craft, but her inspiration often strikes her while she takes advantage of the fabulous scenery around her in Switzerland. If Louise isn't writing, she can be found kayaking, skiing, running, open-water swimming or cycling around the lakes and mountains nearby.

Also this week, we lament the latest cutbacks at Amazon to impact on the book trade, and how one publisher found themselves unwittingly at the centre of an identity theft scam.

The Hobcast Book Show - 113: Exploring Transmedia Storytelling - with Colin Harvey
play

03/20/23 • 73 min

There are so many potential avenues to pursue for the gifted writer. In recent episodes we've touched on poetry and writing plays, but have you ever considered the key role writers play in creating video games? Our guest this week, Colin Harvey, is a published fiction, non-fiction, and comic author in his own right, but it's his expertise in transmedia storytelling that we focus on in this interview. Colin was first drawn to the potential of writing in the digital space as a boy when he won an Atari home computer in the 80s. He's now Principal Writer with Saber Interactive, having been lead writer with Sony's PlayStation London Studio. It's a fascinating insight into a world many writers have no idea exists for them to explore working in.

Also this week, Adrian is concerned about more changes to the way that audiobook distributor Findaway Voices works, and Rebecca reflects on a positive return to Exeter University to inspire students to explore publishing.

We often take a trip to the dark side on The Hobcast Book Show. It comes with the territory of being crime publishers after all. But this week's episode is darker than most, as we meet Sally-Anne Martyn who admits to developing a love and fascination of horror and the paranormal from childhood. It's that background that fueled her debut novel for Joffe Books, The Clinic which was published in October, as well as the experience of working in one of the UK's fabled and feared Victorian-built asylums shortly before they were all closed and sold off.

Also this week, we discuss changes at Penguin Random House, and how the UK postal strike is creating issues for publishers.

We're all storytellers at heart in the fiction publishing world, right? Our guest this week, thriller author Amer Anwar's personal story though is truly astonishing. Brought up in Southall in West London, Amer always assumed that someone from his background could never become a writer, until he won the coveted CWA Debut Dagger award for the opening 3000 words of a novel he'd begun writing at a creative writing workshop. Agents immediately clamoured for his signature. The only issue was, those 3000 words were all he had to offer. It would take him a further five years to finish that novel. His agent stuck by him, but couldn't find a traditional publisher to take it. So Amer published it himself, using every trick he could think of to promote the novel. It paid off, and that first book, Brothers in Blood, was picked out by both The Guardian and The Times newspapers as one of their books of the year. This is an interview you will not want to miss.

Also this week, Rebecca reflects on a busy day at the London Book Fair, and there's news of Hobeck Books new approach to judging submissions...

The Hobcast Book Show - 98: Thrillers, Travel and Giant Kelp - with Lucy Hooft
play

11/22/22 • 75 min

Our guest this week, Lucy Hooft, wins our unofficial award for being our most remote guest yet. She joined us from the tiny coastal town of Luderitz in Namibia, where it rains just 17 days a year on average, and a shopping trip can involve a 260-mile round trip for the basics. But adventure and challenges are no stranger to Lucy and her husband Daniel. They met in the Georgia, and the Caucasus provide the inspiration for Lucy's first thriller The King's Pawn which was published by Burning Chair Publishing last week. Lucy has worked for the British Government in many exciting and challenging countries, but together with Daniel is now involved in Kelp Blue, a company focusing on harnessing the benefits of Giant Kelp forests - which could play a major role in solving many of the world's environmental issues. Writing is all part of the mix for Lucy, who describes herself as a "juggler". She has to be with three young children to look after whilst launching a new school in the local area.

Also this week, Adrian and Rebecca reflect on a tough week both in the Hobeck office and outside, and yet more issues with the Amazon beast ...

The Hobcast Book Show - Episode 56: Making connections with listeners - with Dian Perry
play

02/14/22 • 103 min

We've mentioned it many times on the show, but audiobooks are becoming an ever more important arm of publishing. Double-digit growth year-on-year, a trend accelerated by the pandemic. But how does a narrator connect with their audience most effectively? This week's guest on The Hobcast Book Show is Dian Perry. An American in London, Dian dreamed of becoming a character voice artist. Now with over twenty years of experience and success, she's the author of Voiceover Narration: Creating Performances from the Inside Out. As Dian explains in this fascinating interview, creating a real connection with listeners requires a different approach. It's not just about reading the words in the right order, or having a pleasant voice - it takes so much more than that.

Also this week, Adrian and Rebecca reflect on yet more evidence that the lack of raw materials is changing the publishing industry, and Adrian shares his excitement about an upcoming auction of personal items owned by a certain British actor.

The Hobcast Book Show - 188: Submarines and sci-fi - with Valeriya Salt
play

08/26/24 • 79 min

One half of The Hobcast Book Show team is a submarine obsessive. So imagine Adrian's delight when he learned that our guest this week, Russian author Valeriya Salt, shares that passion. Her debut novel, Dive Beyond Eternity, is a sci-fi adventure partly set on a German wartime Type 23 U-Boat which is discovered undamaged on the floor of the North Sea fifty years after the war ends. It's an intriguing premise, as the sub contains secret Nazi technology that threatens the future of the world. As Valeriya explains, her interest in submarines runs in the family - her mother served in Russia's Black Sea fleet. But how has Valeriya dealt with the challenges of writing a novel in English, her second language?

Also this week, we report on more efforts by the Society of Authors to hold the mega-tech companies to account over the use of copyrighted material in AI systems, and we celebrate the success of fellow UK indie publishers, Blue Moose Books.
