The best podcasts for Crime Fiction Author Interviews and Reviews

Who am I?

I love Crime, mystery and thriller fiction and I get to interview authors and ask about their novels for my show In Person With Paul. These are in-depth chats on the CTFM podcast about writers lives, their narratives, characters and the locations and social context of their novels. We get serious but we also have fun. I'm also currently working on writing The Encyclopedia of Spy Fiction, due out in hardback in 2025 which is a huge project. I write features and reviews for Crime Time, Crime Fiction Lover, the European Literature Network and, from April, Monocle Magazine. I am a judge for the CWA Historical Dagger, which is an honour and a thrill. I've always read crime fiction. It started with spy novels and progressed to hardboiled, noir and the wider genre. So they've been there all my adult life. I started to write about the subject and found that people were interested in my work. That led to the podcast. What could be better than asking the questions you want answered to the authors direct and telling people about books you love. Crime in Translation, historical, spy and noir are my favourites.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My podcast is about books, occasionally films and true crime, but mostly crime fiction in all it's guises - historical, murder mystery, suspense, domestic noir, spy, action and adventure, private eye, police procedural, high concept, cosy, noir, hardboiled, literary, thriller, cross-over, Euro-Noir, crime in translation. I usually ask an author to set aside an hour and we chat; background, books, themes, characters - it goes where it goes. The show appeals to an international audience and I've had chats with Don Winslow, Laura Lippmann, Femi Kayode, Walter Mosley, David McCloskey, Maxim Jakubowski, John Sayles, James Grady, Saima Mir, Imran Mahmood, Tony Kent and a couple of hundred more over the last three years. I do a review show once a month and have partnered with Gwyl Crime Cymru Festival, CrimeFest, Newcastle Noir and the Crime Writers Association for special series of shows featuring their work and events. Interviews, reviews, features and events.

What is my podcast playlist about?

Crime and thriller fiction and books. Chats with authors, established favorites and new comers. 300 shows featuring in-depth chats with prize winners, bestsellers, debutants, serious writers and comic ones. Film makers, scriptwriters, police officers, journalists and crime fiction experts. I want to know what's behind the story, the real things people put into their books, the social issues they care about, how they create realistic living, breathing characters and how they see the world.
