Who am I?

I’m a devoted fan of silly, light-hearted audio fiction comedy podcasts. I love them because they offer an escape from the seriousness of everyday life with their quirky characters, absurd storylines, and laugh-out-loud moments. Whether it’s clever wordplay, over-the-top voice acting, or outlandish situations, these podcasts always bring a smile to my face. They’re the perfect blend of creative storytelling and humor, turning the mundane into a fun adventure, and I can’t get enough of the joy they bring! I grew up loving comedy albums, Monty Python, The Goon Show, National Lampoon, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and old time radio shows. I am a huge fan on comedy audio fiction

What is my podcast playlist about?

The reason behind creating a list of specific comedy podcasts on Goodpods was born out of a desire to share my personal discovery of a certain type of humor that I found deeply engaging. I’ve always loved comedy that blends clever writing with absurd situations and well-crafted characters—think shows that are less reliant on improv and more about narrative structure, like scripted sitcoms in audio form. As a huge fan of audio dramas and storytelling, I noticed there was a gap when it came to finding comedy podcasts that focused on strong narratives while still delivering plenty of laughs. So, I set out to create this list as a resource for listeners like me who appreciate comedy that doesn’t just riff but instead delivers well-planned, hilarious arcs, unique settings, and memorable characters. It's for those who want to immerse themselves in a world of well-paced humor, without the unpredictability of full improvisation. By sharing this list, I hope to connect with fellow podcast enthusiasts who are looking for a consistent laugh that builds up over a series, rather than a joke-of-the-moment style.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Wooden Overcoats

Why this podcast?

Well written and performed A great comic setting that evolves with the characters and I love British comedy. This is like listening to a British sit-com that was never on TV. Wooden Overcoats is a brilliantly crafted British audio sitcom that follows the Funn siblings, Rudyard and Antigone, as they struggle to keep their failing funeral business afloat on the fictional island of Piffling Vale. Their quiet life is upended when a rival, the impossibly charming Eric Chapman, opens a competing funeral home, drawing away all their customers. The podcast excels with its sharp wit, quirky characters, and impeccable comedic timing. Created by David K. Barnes and directed by Andy Goddard and John Wakefield, Wooden Overcoats is praised for its top-tier sound design and clever writing. Felix Trench and Beth Eyre shine as the dysfunctional Funn siblings, while Tom Crowley brings perfect balance as their affable rival, Eric Chapman. The supporting cast, including Ciara Baxendale as Georgie and Belinda Lang as Madeleine the mouse, adds layers of humor and charm. The show’s unique setting and character-driven humor make it a standout among audio dramas. Its blend of dark comedy and heartfelt moments has earned rave reviews, with comparisons to classic British comedies like Fawlty Towers. The New Statesman called it "funnier than anything broadcast on the BBC," while Wired described it as “very funny, very British.

5. Midnight Burger

Why this podcast?

Midnight Burger is an intriguing and often surreal audio drama that blends science fiction, comedy, and existential musings, set in a diner that travels through time, space, and alternate dimensions. While many listeners are drawn to its quirky and imaginative plots, others appreciate the narrative-driven episodes that offer depth and cohesive storytelling rather than improvisational humor. Each episode typically features a stand-alone story that explores different timelines, cultures, or bizarre scenarios, with the Midnight Burger staff serving as the consistent thread. The voice acting and characters—such as Gloria, the diner’s no-nonsense manager, and the other quirky employees—are well-developed, grounding the strange and fantastical settings. The show's narrative strength comes from these episodes that drive the plot forward, offering rich, thematic content about the human condition, science, and the mysteries of the universe. For those who prefer structured storytelling over improvisational comedy, Midnight Burger still shines through its strong writing and creative world-building. While there are moments of humor, these don’t dominate the episodes and are often used to enhance the unique, ongoing story arcs rather than derail them into pure improvisation. The balance between episodic adventure and overarching narrative is one of the show’s key strengths, making it a solid recommendation for listeners who appreciate both high-concept sci-fi and thoughtful storytelling.
