Our guest, Dr. Gabor Maté, a renowned speaker and bestselling author, sheds light on the true nature of addiction, and why so many of us fall victim to this harsh reality.

Society has created an ideal around feeling “normal” and finding “mental sanity,” when we do not even have a clear definition of what“mental sanity” is. So many people struggle with emotional pain on a day-to-day basis. When that pain becomes overwhelming, especially from early childhood trauma and attachment injuries, it’s human nature to try and escape that pain until it gets resolved.

Gabor describes his clinical experience of helping those struggling with addiction, and how he concluded that addiction is always a strategy to escape from emotional pain, trauma, and attachments injuries during childhood. He speaks authentically and shares about his experience of addiction, while giving hope with the basic aspects that help people heal.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • What led Dr. Gabor Maté into working with substance abusers
  • You may have an addiction you don’t know about
  • The dissociative nature of certain addictions
  • Why people fall back on their addiction
  • How workaholism made Gabor feel wanted
  • How to truly help clients with addictions
  • Accessing emotions in the present as a tool for healing

Keith Kurlander, CEO of Higher Practice, reveals for the first time publicly a powerful story about his experimentation with psychedelics in college and how they led to a serious Bipolar diagnosis. This sent him on a personal and spiritual quest to find a solution to this disorder. What he found along the way was completely unexpected and ultimately freeing.

Psychedelic use is not typically discussed at length in our graduate programs and clinical training institutes. There is a lot of cultural taboo around the subject and mental health professionals are not immune to this problem. However, many clients have experimented with psychedelics and report both extraordinary insights as well as profound nightmares.

In this episode, Keith will discuss his own experiences with psychedelics with a focus on how one experience, in particular, led to the manifestation of mental illness. He goes on to dispel the myth that the psychedelic itself surfaced a budding mental illness. It actually surfaced something much more profound that took years to identify.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • The morning after my psychedelic nightmare
  • My search for the causes of my Bipolar Disorder
  • How psychedelics surface repressed trauma
  • Working with clients who are you using psychedelics
  • How to be grateful for all events from my past

Keith Kurlander, CEO of Higher Practice, goes into the details of 3 productivity habits that transformed his productivity and mindset. These relatively simple practices are fairly easy to put into place and can literally change the way you practice counseling, grow your business, and achieve stable mindsets for a highly productive day.

Productivity and efficiency are often terms that show up in corporate America or the coaching culture. Rarely, do we discuss these terms in therapy circles in regards to mood stability and mental health. However, productivity habits when done “right” often minimize negative coping patterns that result in addictions, dependencies and mood fluctuations. When productivity is defined as engaging in tasks that are most meaningful and purposeful we can “hack” our behaviors to optimize our brain to stay on task in a clear and balanced way.

In this episode, Keith shares 3 productivity hacks that has helped him stay on task, focus with more clarity as a clinician, and achieve as a mission-oriented entrepreneur. By using these hacks for yourself or your clients, you can also achieve more results in less time while feeling energized at the end of the day.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • How a morning and evening ritual can alter your brain state for the entire day
  • Why a mission-statement anchor changes productivity levels
  • Booting the brain’s computer with physical exercise
  • What we can learn from the first African-American astronaut about achieving large goals

Ken Falke, Founder of the EOD Warrior Foundation, discusses life as a Navy bomb specialist and how it led him on a path to helping veterans with psychological trauma from explosive devices. He shares his intimate understanding of what it’s like to hold one of the most dangerous jobs in the military and the therapeutic resources needed for these people.

With up to thirty-percent of veterans suffering from PTSD symptoms it’s clearly a crisis that needs to be addressed. As discussed in the episode, the military does an excellent job in training service members on active duty and how to regulate the mind and body while on the battlefield. However, where services seem to fall short is in the aftermath.

When things go “wrong” and a service member needs support for psychological trauma their options are very limited to modalities that don’t show high levels of efficacy or patient follow-through. Ken will share about another way of working with veterans who suffer from PTSD. The model he and his team developed relies heavily on coaching techniques and post-traumatic growth orientations.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • How the military trains self-regulation
  • How trauma stacks up in service members
  • Why Vietnam POW's displayed fewer trauma symptoms than other veterans
  • Clinical mistakes are made when over focusing on combat
  • An inspiring story of a quadriplegic

In this episode, Emma Derman Teitel talks about a truly empowering approach to feminist psychotherapy and helping women overcome internalized patriarchy. It’s often easy as clinicians to simply listen to stories that need to be told by women and stop there. However, a combination of support and challenge is needed in order to help a woman regain her inner power and bring forth her deepest gifts.

This episode comes at a time where the #MeToo movement has allowed so many women to step forward, speak their truth, and tell the stories of how men abused their power. The individual and collective voice are necessary for society to heal and evolve, which, in turn, can lead to more equality and safety.

Mental health professionals have heard these stories in their offices for many years. The storytelling is one important component of healing in a therapeutic context. However, often a much deeper inquiry and investigation into perceptions, traumas, and core beliefs must also happen for a sense of inner power and authority of one’s life. Our guest today, Emma Derman Teitel is a psychotherapist, coach and women’s group facilitator committed to the empowerment of girls and women around the world. She is passionate about guiding individuals and groups into a deeper connection with themselves and fostering the ability to live with embodied courage, grace and vulnerability.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • Emma’s unique journey about what led her to help women
  • Feminist psychotherapy versus feminist theory
  • Signals that women are actively struggling with patriarchal injuries
  • How to challenge women to overcome the obstacles that they perceive
  • The fuel and fire of the woman healer
