03/27/23 • 15 min
Hi!
I’m Karen Hall, Host of The Hero Within Podcast.
Today we hear from my good friend, Becky Belnap. Two of her 4 children have a rare mitochondrial disease, a genetic disorder called Leigh's Syndrome. It is so rare that only 30 kids in the nation have this disease, and she describes being on a medical odyssey to have their disease diagnosed and get the help they needed.
Becky learned early about adversity and has seen others suffer. She shares her own struggles and insights she has about dealing with adversity in healthy ways vs. non-healthy ways. She earned a degree in Public Health and now works for the Nexus Coalition for Drug Prevention teaching in schools.
Today, you will learn:
*The effect of Becky's sister's suicide on Becky's life as a teen.
*How she was able to have the expectation that her life would be hard and how this prepared her and helped her deal with difficulties later in life. *Why Becky feels that her kids hit the jackpot with the genetic mutation that they have.
*How her husband grieved and dealt with the diagnosis differently than she did by researching and forming a foundation and helping others.
*How Becky continues to cope with the tools the Spirit inspired her to use with exercise, building a support system with friends, music, prayer, and worship.
Have you experienced adversity? What has helped you deal with your trials? I'd love to hear about it!
Wishing you lots of love on your own hero’s journey,
xoxo, Karen
