Jesus on Every Page – Chapter 13 – “Christ’s Pictures: Discovering Jesus in the OT Types”

I’m sure all of you have heard the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words”

• Can you give any examples from your own life that supports this saying?

The OT is full of vivid visuals that help God’s people “remember better, understand better, and look forward better”

• Examples?

The study of how God used pictures to teach His people is usually called typology – kind of a visual theology (God pictured the truth to preach the truth).

• Do you remember when you were first introduced to the concept of typology?
• What are some good books you have read on this subject that you would recommend or have found helpful?

Definition of a type

• A type is a real person, place, object, or event that God ordained to act as a predictive pattern or resemblance of Jesus’ person and work, or of opposition to both. Types can also represent other new covenant realities
• Examples

~ Adam (person)
~ Jerusalem (place)
~ Tabernacle (object)
~ Event (flood)
~ Prophet, priest and kind (offices)
▪ Caution ~ make sure you work first to understand the type in its original setting and what it was teaching its original audience [danger is to jump too quickly to the fulfillment of the type]
~ Example to work through ~ Passover (including the Passover lamb)
How did an OT believer use or relate to the types by faith?

▪ The type saved only those who by faith saw the great future antitype
▪ Poythress quote on page 145 (discuss)
Foundational truth with typology ~ The same truths are found in the type and antitype (not in the same way or in the
same degree, but the same essence)
▪ Fulfillment presents the same truth enlarged, clarified, and heightened
▪ Same gospel truths are present in both testaments
