Jesus on Every Page – Chapters 1-6
Unfortunately, there is a general neglect of the OT in many churches. Several reasons:

  • ▪ Liberalism – sustained attack on the OT by liberal scholars have shaken Christian’s confidence in the OT
  • ▪ Ignorance – lack of knowledge of the culture and history of the OT
  • ▪ Irrelevance – no longer applicable to life today
  • ▪ Dispensationalism – their artificial dividing up of the Bible into different eras ended up relegating the OT to a minor status
    ▪ Bad examples – OT preaching and teaching is often done poorly
    ▪ Laziness – studying the OT might take more effort
    ▪ Christ-less preaching – too often OT preaching degenerates into moralism
    ▪ Using the title “Christ” instead of the name “Jesus” when referring to the 2
nd person of the trinity in the OT
    What’s the OT all about?
    ▪ Luke 24:25-27, 44
    ▪ Matthew 5:17-18
    ▪ John 8:56
    ▪ Galatians 3:8
    ▪ Hebrews 11:8-9
    ▪ 1 Peter 1:10-11

The Gospel for Life - The Local Church and Missions Keeping in Touch
play

06/17/24 • 14 min

The church should support those it sends.
Not only should our churches send missionaries wisely, but we should support them appropriately. And our support for workers should be as ample as God’s Word enjoins. As we commit to send or support missionaries, we should expect our giving to be serious, significant, and sacrificial. Whether we give directly to missionaries
or through some cooperative sending agency, our goal should be workers amply supplied so that they lack nothing.
The church can care for missionaries by keeping in touch.
The foundation of a congregation’s ability to care for its missionaries is regular communication. We can’t meet needs we don’t know about, and it’s hard to meet pastoral needs if relationships atrophy. Thankfully, it’s probably never been easier to keep up relationships from afar. With email and Skype, there is generally no
reason to fall out of touch with workers. But it still takes effort. Busyness, time-zone differences, and sometimes security concerns can push these calls off the agenda. Church leaders should consider setting a regular monthly time when they will call each supported worker. In addition, they might find another member of the church who is willing to keep in regular contact with each missionary and occasionally report back to the congregation.

The Gospel for Life - 10 Things You Should Know about Grieving People Pt.4
play

06/24/24 • 14 min

Grieving people would enjoy hearing a story about your experience with the person who died.
In the midst of grief people hear a lot of generalities about the person who died, things like, “He was a really great guy.” But what they long for are specific stories about experiences others had with that person, specific qualities that someone appreciated and instances in which those qualities were evident. So to tell a grieving person one of these stories brings joy in the midst of sorrow. And to actually write out one of these stories provides the grieving person with something that brings comfort again and again as they read it and share it with others over the days and years to come.
Grieving people want you to simply be there at the visitation, the funeral, and beyond.
If you can’t make it to the visitation or the funeral, don’t tell the person why you couldn’t come (unless you were on the other side of the world or in a coma) because whatever reason kept you from being there on the lowest days of their life, when they wanted the whole world to stop and take notice that the person they loved died, simply won’t be good enough. Just say that you are so disappointed that you couldn’t be there. Ask the person to tell you about aspects of the service that were special to them. Maybe even ask if you can come over and watch a video of the service with them.

The Gospel for Life - 10 Things You Should Know about the Final Judgment Pt 2
play

07/04/24 • 14 min

Happy Independence Day for those in The United States
10 Things You Should Know about the Final Judgment
The final judgment teaches us that evil won’t triumph.

When we see the horrendous evils perpetrated in our world, we may question if those who pursue evil will finally win. Will the wicked perpetually rage and the world continue to be a place of sorrow and war? Scripture proclaims that hose who murder, rape, and terrorize others and who never turn away from evil will not get away with their wickedness forever. Goodness will finally win; justice is the last word.

The gospel doesn’t make any sense if there isn’t a final judgment.

As Christians, we proclaim that Jesus saves, that when we trust in him we will be spared from the wrath to come. But the message of salvation in Jesus is pointless if there is no judgment. Many unbelievers today are sure of one thing: at death all will be well. Everyone after death will be fine. Nothing bad will happen to any of us. But if they are right, the call to believe in Jesus for salvation is robbed of significance. We may proclaim “Jesus saves,” but what does he save us from if there is no final reckoning? One reason the gospel falls on deaf ears is because unbelievers are convinced that their response to the gospel doesn’t make any difference.

We didn’t invent the final judgment to frighten people.

It is clearly taught in the Scriptures and represents the teaching of the church throughout history. The day in which we live tends to minimize the consequences of our actions, and we are prone to emphasize God’s love over his holiness. But God is holy love, and this is the testimony of the Bible and of the church throughout the ages. The final judgment wasn’t invented by us but captures the faithful teaching of the church through the ages.

The final judgment motivates us to witness and proclaim the gospel to the lost.

We are all tempted to fear people and to think that others don’t want to hear the message. We need to think carefully, of course, about how to share with the lost. We don’t get anywhere if we are rude and annoying. But we are called upon to be bold and courageous. We know that a great day of reckoning is coming, that heaven and hell are at stake, and thus we call upon all people everywhere to repent. We don’t proclaim the judgment out of anger but from a heart of love. We long for people to be saved from the final and great catastrophe. We want to be faithful watchmen in our generation.

Thomas R. Schreiner is the author of The Justice and Goodness of God: A Biblical Case for the Final Judgment.

The Gospel for Life - The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
play

07/19/24 • 14 min

The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
“One great challenge for any congregation is to insist that the Spirit in its midst is truly the Old Testament Spirit of the God of Israel, not the spirit of happy times and crowd dynamics.” Pg. 13 Prompt: Why do think this is a challenge?
THE SPIRIT OF GOD WAS PRESENT AT CREATION Pg. 14
He was involved in two ways: in the ecology and theology of creation.
1. Ecology. A Christian view of ecology must start with Genesis 1, where the Spirit of God was present in the darkest, bleakest of all places
2. Theology. The Spirit of God was present in and above creation.
THE SPIRIT OF GOD WAS PRESENT IN THE CREATION OF MAN Pg. 17
1. You are made in God’s image and likeness. Genesis 1:26–27
2. 2. God gave man the mandate to subdue the earth and rule over it.
3. God made man a unique way. THE SPIRIT OF GOD WAS PRESENT IN OLD TESTAMENT PEOPLE Pg. 18
1. The Spirit in craftsmen(Exodus 35:30-36)
2. 2. The Spirit in the judges. (Judges 6:34)
3. The Spirit in the kings. (1 Samuel 11:6, 16:14)
4. The Spirit in Moses. (Is 63:10, Numbers 11:16-17)
5. The Spirit in all Old Testament believers. (Pg. 23)
“In conclusion, then, we can say that while the Holy Spirit indwelt all Old Testament believers, their experience of the Holy Spirit was usually limited to a degree of personal filling, but they were rarely fully filled, and even more rarely did they overflow to others in witness, evangelism, and mission. That filling full
and overflowing awaited the apex of the person and work of Christ, when the Holy Spirit was poured out on Him without measure and on His church in an overflowing way.” Pg. 24

The Gospel for Life - The Holy Spirit: The Infinite, Personal God
play

07/17/24 • 14 min

The Holy Spirit by Geoff Thomas
Chapter 1 The Holy Spirit: The Infinite, Personal God

“Many people today are ignorant about the person and work of the Holy Spirit, both theologically and experientially” Pg. 2
Prompt: Respond to Thomas’ assertion here. Do you sense this is accurate of the church today? Why have a conference dedicated to the Holy Spirit?
“We know that the Son of God became incarnate, died on the cross, rose from the grave, and ascended to the throne of heaven so that He might pour out His Spirit at Pentecost and continue pouring Him out on the church everywhere. Without the gift of the Holy Spirit, the earlier accomplishments of the Savior would not have profited us.” Pg. 2
Prompt: How is the work of the Holy Spirit connected to the Gospel? Why is the gift of the Holy Spirit necessary to each and every Christian?
The essential, vital, central element in the life of every congregation is the person and work of the Spirit of God as illuminated and structured and judged by the Spirit-breathed Word. Pg. 2
Prompt: Discuss the practical application of this in the life of the local church. Where and why is the Spirit’s work “essential, vital, and the central element for the church”?
There is no good in any of us that is not a result of the Spirit’s work. Every virtue we possess, every victory we win, and every thought of holiness are due to the Spirit. Whatever God calls us to do in life can be accomplished only by the Holy Spirit. Pg. 2
Prompt: Is Thomas overstating our dependency on the Holy Spirit? Is there biblical evidence for these claims?
What verse come to mind? (Gal 5:13-26, John 15:5)

The Gospel for Life - Blaspheming the Holy Spirit

Blaspheming the Holy Spirit

The Gospel for Life

play

07/24/24 • 14 min

Geoff Thomas: The Holy Spirit – Chapter 5: “Blaspheming the Holy Spirit”
Opening verses – Matthew 12:22-32 (parallel passages: Mark 3:28-30 & Luke 12:10) & Hebrews 6:4-6
Sometimes this topic is hard to understand and to reconcile with our understanding of who God is (a God of mercy, grace, love, forgiveness)
▪ Exodus 34:6-7
▪ Psalm 130
What the Unforgivable Sin is Not (pages 50-52)
1. The unpardonable sin is not blasphemy
2. It is not a sexual sin
3. It is not suicide
What the Unforgivable Sin Is
▪ For this, I do not find his two categories (subheadings) on pages 53-56 helpful
▪ I think the full paragraph on page 58 is much better and more helpful
End with this quote from page 57:
▪ “If you are anxious that you have committed blasphemy against the Spirit, you needn’t fear that you have done
so, for such blasphemy is always accompanied by complete indifference to losing your soul. In other words, if
you are afraid you have committed this sin, we can say with great confidence that you haven’t, because your
troubled conscience is a sure testimony that you haven’t committed it.”

Grieving people will not necessarily call you if they need something
10 Things You Should Know about Grieving People by Nancy Guthrie
This article is part of the 10 Things You Should Know series.
Sometimes we say to people, “I’m here. Please call me if you need anything.” And we mean it. But someone in the midst of grief can barely think straight. They certainly can’t take on the task of recruiting and organizing the help they need. What they really need is for people around them to figure out something that would be helpful and just do it. “I’m going to mow your grass for the rest of the summer so you don’t have to think about it,” or “Would you like some company to go pick out the burial plot or to order the gravestone?” or “I’m going to come over on Thursday morning and do your laundry.” No one is ever going to call and ask someone to come over and clean their toilets or wash their clothes, but sometimes that is what they really need.
