Jesus on Every Page – Chapters 1-6
Unfortunately, there is a general neglect of the OT in many churches. Several reasons:

  • ▪ Liberalism – sustained attack on the OT by liberal scholars have shaken Christian’s confidence in the OT
  • ▪ Ignorance – lack of knowledge of the culture and history of the OT
  • ▪ Irrelevance – no longer applicable to life today
  • ▪ Dispensationalism – their artificial dividing up of the Bible into different eras ended up relegating the OT to a minor status
    ▪ Bad examples – OT preaching and teaching is often done poorly
    ▪ Laziness – studying the OT might take more effort
    ▪ Christ-less preaching – too often OT preaching degenerates into moralism
    ▪ Using the title “Christ” instead of the name “Jesus” when referring to the 2
nd person of the trinity in the OT
    What’s the OT all about?
    ▪ Luke 24:25-27, 44
    ▪ Matthew 5:17-18
    ▪ John 8:56
    ▪ Galatians 3:8
    ▪ Hebrews 11:8-9
    ▪ 1 Peter 1:10-11

The Gospel for Life - 10 Key Bible Verses on Death and Resurrection Pt.1
play

06/26/24 • 14 min

John 11:25-26 ESV The Death of Lazarus

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” Read More

Jesus does not merely say that he will bring about the resurrection or that he will be the cause of the resurrection (both of which are true), but something much stronger: I am the resurrection and the life. Resurrection from the dead and genuine eternal life in fellowship with God are so closely tied to Jesus that they are embodied in him and can be found only in relationship to him. Therefore “believes in me” implies personal trust in Christ. The preposition translated “in” (Gk. eis) is striking, for eis ordinarily means “into,” giving the sense that genuine faith in Christ in a sense brings people “into” Christ, so that they rest in and become united with Christ. (This same expression is found in John 3:16, 18, 36; John 6:35; John 7:38; John 12:44, 46; John 14:12; 1 John 5:10.) The “I am” statement here represents a claim to deity.

John 14:1–3 ESV
The Death of Lazarus

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” Read More

“Believe in God” is translated as an imperative (or command), but the Greek could also be rendered as a statement, “You believe in God.” The imperative is probably better in light of the previous sentence. What troubles the disciples is Jesus’ imminent departure (see John 13:36). “Believe,” in keeping with Old Testament usage (e.g., Isa. 28:16), denotes personal, relational trust.

In light of the context (Jesus going to the Father; John 13:1, 3; John 14:28), it is best to understand “my Father’s house” as referring to heaven. In keeping with this image, the many rooms (or “dwelling places,” Gk. monē) are places to live within that large house. The translation “rooms” is not meant to convey the idea of small spaces, but only to keep consistency in the metaphor of heaven as God’s “house.” In a similar passage, Jesus speaks of his followers being received into the “eternal dwellings” (Luke 16:9; cf. 1 Cor. 2:9).

Jesus on Every Page – Chapter 13 – “Christ’s Pictures: Discovering Jesus in the OT Types”

I’m sure all of you have heard the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words”

  • Can you give any examples from your own life that supports this saying?

The OT is full of vivid visuals that help God’s people “remember better, understand better, and look forward better”

  • Examples?

The study of how God used pictures to teach His people is usually called typology – kind of a visual theology (God pictured the truth to preach the truth).

  • Do you remember when you were first introduced to the concept of typology?
  • What are some good books you have read on this subject that you would recommend or have found helpful?

Definition of a type

  • A type is a real person, place, object, or event that God ordained to act as a predictive pattern or resemblance of Jesus’ person and work, or of opposition to both. Types can also represent other new covenant realities
  • Examples

~ Adam (person)
~ Jerusalem (place)
~ Tabernacle (object)
~ Event (flood)
~ Prophet, priest and kind (offices)
▪ Caution ~ make sure you work first to understand the type in its original setting and what it was teaching its original audience [danger is to jump too quickly to the fulfillment of the type]
~ Example to work through ~ Passover (including the Passover lamb)
How did an OT believer use or relate to the types by faith?

▪ The type saved only those who by faith saw the great future antitype
▪ Poythress quote on page 145 (discuss)
Foundational truth with typology ~ The same truths are found in the type and antitype (not in the same way or in the
same degree, but the same essence)
▪ Fulfillment presents the same truth enlarged, clarified, and heightened
▪ Same gospel truths are present in both testaments
What are some tips/principles in your own study and work that you would want to pass along?

The Gospel for Life - Resisting Gossip – Part 2: Resisting Gossip
play

05/28/24 • 14 min

This week we want to work through the issue of gossip. We will be using Resisting Gossip: Winning the War of the Wagging Tongue by Matthew Mitchell as a guide.
▪ Resisting Gossip – Part 2: Resisting Gossip (chapters 4-6)
Sinful gossip includes the sin of judging others
▪ See James 4:11-12 [slander means to speak against someone, to talk them down, to speak ill of them, to disdain someone or to run somebody down verbally; intent is to belittle another, to pour out contempt, to mock, to hurt, to harm, to destroy]
▪ What are the issues in passing judgment?

~ Rush to judgment- which involves: listening to only one side; not considering the source; assuming and assigning motives; and we assume the worst about someone
~ Prideful judgment – it is not our place, calling, or responsibility; we don’t judge how we would want to be judged; we aren’t willing to humble ourselves
~ Unloving judgment – critical judgment (lacks charity)
Practicing Ephesians 4:29 – Applying the put off/put on principle to our use of our mouths
1. Say nothing at all (Proverbs 10:19; 17:27-28)
2. Commend the Commendable – say something good (“helpful for building others up”)
3. Talk to people, not about them (Matthew 5:24) – this can mean loving confrontation
4. Offer words of mercy – words should “minister grace to our hearers” (e.g., Proverbs 10:21)
5. Talk to and about the Lord (Ephesians 5:19-20)
Listening
▪ Evil listening
~ Proverbs 17:4
~ Live as children of the light

  • 1. Pray and weigh (Use wisdom to ask discerning questions to know how to engage with the one gossiping)
  • 2. Avoid – Proverbs 20:19
  • 3. Cover and defend– Proverbs 17:9; 10:12)
  • 4. Go to the one being talked about

The Gospel for Life - Resisting Gossip – Part 3: Responding to Gossip
play

05/29/24 • 14 min

Resisting Gossip – Part 3: Responding to Gossip (chapters 7-8)
The reality is that we all will be gossiped about ~ can be quite painful. Below are some reasons why:

  • Gossip is a betrayal (form of treason) – Psalm 55:12-14
  • Gossip can leave us feeling vulnerable – Psalm 55:4-8
  • Gossip steals our reputation – Proverbs 22:1 – “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”
The question is, how are we to respond when people gossip or slander us? In faith and in love First, responding in faith:

Psalms can be so helpful ~ Psalm 140:1-13 is a good example [principles drawn from this Psalm]

  • 1. Take it to the Lord (140:1-2)
  • Tell it like it is (vs.3)
  • Remember to whom you are talking (vs.6-8)

2. Ask God for Justice (Psalm 140:8-11)
3. Believe that God Will Answer (Psalm 140:12-13)
Second, responding in love

  • Love our enemies – Matthew 5:43-47
  • Love is active – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Four practical and biblical love-in-action response when we find ourselves the target of gossip:
1. Pray (Matthew 5:44; Philippians 1:9-11)
2. Overlook (Proverbs 19:11) ~ kind of a one-sided forgiving
3. Confront (Matthew 18:15-20). A few questions to keep in mind before you confront someone who has been gossiping about you

  • Is it true?
  • What can I learn from this?
  • Should I defend myself?
  • Can I rejoice in this

4. Repay Evil with Good (1 Peter 3:9-12; 1 Corinthians 4:10, 12-13)
