Encapsulation And The Five Coaching Steps: With Nancy Myers

The Frame of Mind Coaching™ Podcast

It’s not uncommon to be confused as to why people can’t see us for our intelligence or talent. Instead they'd rather question our experience and abilities. But what really makes the difference is what we do in those situations.

On this brand new episode of The Frame of Mind CoachingTM Podcast we have an amazing guest. Her name is Nancy Myers, she is the COO at RapStar Energy Drink, and recently changed gears in her career to the energy drink industry.

Today Nancy comes to me with a very frustrating issue: while being on the job, people around her, including her own team, tend to underestimate her. And she doesn’t know how to approach these people and make them understand how incredible she is at her job. So what I suggest doing is following the Five Coaching Steps, and specifically the step of encapsulation.

Why? As you follow these steps, encapsulation is the bow on the coaching gift - by encapsulating what the other person is communicating, you are describing the problem and verifying if what you got from the conversation is exactly what they meant to say and express. That way people can know that you understand them and establish trust.

The More I Try To Help, The Worse It Gets - Fridays with Ferne: Episode #21

Have you ever had a friend that ended up on the wrong side of the tracks? Have you ever felt like the more you tried to help them, the more distant they got?

Millie has a good friend Tom, he's a kind guy with a sweet smile and a shy laugh. One day, Tom starts doing drugs. He tries it once, twice, and then starts doing it every weekend. Millie begins to worry about him, but the more she expresses her worry, the more Tom draws away. He doesn't want to hear about her worries or her nagging. Tom stops reaching out and stops answering Millie's messages. Millie didn’t know what to do, she didn’t know how to help him.

If Millie really cares about Tom, and is ready to be consistent with him, I would suggest for Millie to simply be Tom’s friend. To be his supporter, even if he is doing something she disapproves of. I would encourage Millie to be consistent with Tom and focus on all the things that are going right, be his anchor to a healthier world.

Now, if YOU were in Millie’s position, what would you do? Let us know!

How To Get Out Of An Obligation - Fridays with Ferne: Episode #22

Have you ever helped someone out of obligation and didn’t know how to get out of it?

Ash certainly has. There is one guy at work, Bob, that is a bit of a slacker. Recently, their boss threatened to fire Bob if he didn’t pick up the pace. Bob immediately came to Ash for help. Ash usually likes helping people, but Bob isn’t easy to help; he is lazy and needy. Ash is tired of helping Bob, but he doesn’t know how to stop. Ash doesn’t want to be the reason that Bob loses his job.

Instead of helping Bob scrape by in something that he clearly isn’t passionate about, I recommend that Ash help Bob find his passion elsewhere. If Ash can help Bob find something that he is truly passionate about, he is more likely to excel.
