MORE DETAIL ON THE SHOW
Teddy Atlas and co-host Ken Rideout record this episode once again from Oxnard, CA where Teddy is in training camp with his fighter Oleksandr “Alex” Gvozdyk, the WBO Light Heavyweight Champion.
After some discussion of camp, like how Teddy selects and works with Alex’s sparing partners (10:54), the two dive into the recent deal between Tyson Fury and ESPN/Top Rank/Bob Arum and what it means for future fights in the heavyweight division (22:20). Teddy shares what the sport of boxing would need to do to really give fans the fights they want (37:15).
Later, Vasyl Lomachenko and his manager Egis Klimas join the show (1:02:08). Loma covers everything from getting into boxing as a child, his relationship with his father, the switch from amateurs to pros, overcoming the controversial loss to Orlando Salido in his second pro bout, his mental exercises with sports psychologist, thoughts on trash talking, what makes him different from fighters like Gervonta Davis, and more.
For background, Lomachenko is the current unified lightweight world champion. Prior, he held the WBO featherweight and junior lightweight world titles between 2014 and 2018 before moving up to lightweight. He is also a 2x Olympic Gold Medalist.
**NOTE: Ken mistakenly says that Loma won his third world title in just his third professional fight. He meant to say, Loma won his FIRST world title in just his third professional fight. No one has done this in fewer fights, and Loma is only the second person ever to do it in three fights. (Tied with Saensak Muangsurin, a Thai boxer who fought in the 1970s.)
Egis Klimas is the manager to Lomachenko, but also manager to WBC Light Heavyweight Champ Oleksandr “Alex” Gvozdyk, Unified Cruiserweight World Champion Oleksandr Usyk, WBO Light Heavyweight Champ Sergey Kovalev, and other top fighters.
