On this episode of TheFemmeCast, I chat with author Emma Burger about body image, addiction, and self-acceptance. For the record, self-acceptance is the art of accepting who you really are, as you are. Imperfections and all. Sadly, this is something that many of us, men and women, have never really been taught how to do. In her new book Spaghetti For Starving Girls, Emma takes you on a journey with a young woman who is struggling with just that.
A fictitious novel based loosely on some of Emma’s own personal experiences and anecdotes, Spaghetti For Starving Girls is about a young woman who after drunkenly sabotaging her plans to move to New York city for a lucrative job in investment banking, finds herself working at both a high-end Italian restaurant and the university hospital taking care of adolescent patients struggling with anorexia.
In this episode, we chat all about this inspiring book as well as our own personal struggles with body image, addiction and self acceptance.

Toxic Positivity
On this episode of TheFemmeCast, I explain how constantly trying to think positively about everyone and everything, might be the very thing that’s keeping you stuck, unhealed and disempowered. I know this might sound unreal, considering the many theories and campaigns on positive thinking out there. But hear me out.

The Period Mix
On this episode of TheFemmeCast, I’m giving myself full permission to be an unapologetic hot mess, because if I'm being completely honest...it’s almost that time of the month for me, and there's just no pretending I am anything but. In fact, I literally just unfolded myself from the blanket wrapped fetal position that I was strategically using to keep my cramps at bay.
But it's kind of got me thinking...as women we love to vent to each other about our periods, but not necessarily when we’re on our period. We'll go on and on about how tired, bloated, irritable, emotional and uncomfortable we feel when we're on it, without any shame or reservation whatsoever. But to actually make the bold proclamation to say "I'm on my period?" That is usually reserved for only closest and dearest members of our sacred feminine sisterhood.
The funny thing is that as women, this is probably one of the most powerful and magical times of the month for us. The problem is we try so hard to hide it and keep it under wraps, whilst we moan and groan our way through it, that we usually end up missing the opportunity to take advantage of it completely. And that’s because, there’s still a huge stigma around “being menstrual.” And I think it’s time that changed and that we allow ourselves the grace to be honest about how we’re feeling, when we’re feeling it.
Join me as I walk you through My Top 10 Dos and Don'ts For Feel Good Periods.
You know I am not one for rules, ever! But when it comes to trying to navigate my cycle, I follow these rules explicitly. And today, I get to share these rules with you, so that you can be inspired to be a little kinder to yourself, to be present with how you’re feeling, and to move through your cycle with much more ease. Most importantly, to give yourself “be menstrual” without any shame or guilt about it.
I’d love to know if any of this advice resonates with you, so please share your feedback with me! Also, if you have any tips or tricks that you use for your ‘feel better’ period, please get in touch and share your wisdom.
