The emPowered Author: A Marketing Podcast for Nonfiction Authors
11/15/22 • 17 min
There are very few must haves I recommend. You need a website, author friend. Hands down, a must. And outside of that, the second non-negotiable in my book is that you need to be on LinkedIn. I don’t think you have to do all the things or be all the places, but I do believe that being visible and engaged on LinkedIn will bode well for all authors, non-fiction especially. Why? Well, because not all social media platforms are created equally, and LinkedIn is the one poised for conversion.
On this episode of The emPowered Author Podcast, I share why I love LinkedIn, how to optimize your infrastructure and ways to engage so that your target readers and clients will find you!

Did you know that getting recognition for your amazing book could also be a way to help you continue to market your book? I don’t know about you, but getting an award always excites me ... and getting an award as an author, well you may have to scrape me up off the floor because I’ll be a puddle when that happens! The truth is that awards are often overlooked as an opportunity to help spread the word about you, your book and your message.
For this episode, Stephanie Feger is joined by Boni Wagner Stafford who has a publishing gift that she shares with the authors she works with. And in this episode of The emPowered Author Podcast, she’s sharing that gift with us as we talk about awards and how they offer marketing opportunities for authors, too!

6.6 The Power of the Ask (And How it Relates to Endorsements)
The emPowered Author: A Marketing Podcast for Nonfiction Authors

An endorsement – at its core – is someone providing you public approval of you, your product, your business, your book. Yes, that’s right ... endorsements are a meaningful part of your book’s marketing efforts and today’s episode dives into that. Be prepared to learn all the W’s on endorsements. What it is. Who to ask. When to ask. And some unique ideas to get more!
If you don’t ask, you are already making the decision for someone. That’s true when asking for an endorsement. That’s also true when asking someone to buy a book, to invite you to come speak, to engage in a strategic partnership, and to get a review. In this episode of The emPowered Author Podcast, the two book experts chat about the power of the ask.

Don’t get amazing author photos and let them sit on a shelf ... or in a Dropbox or Google Drive file collecting internet dust. There is little that pains me more than seeing this happen, especially when you have amazing photos to work with. Use them! Leverage them! Incorporate them into your marketing efforts!
In this episode of The emPowered Author Podcast, Stephanie chats with Chanel Nicole, personal brand photographer, about how to use your author photos to grow your business. Your website should be to your author brand and business as your address is to your home and personal life. It should be your hub. The place you start. The place you express yourself. The place people know to go to find you, authentically. When you think of your website as an afterthought, you aren’t fully leveraging all that your website can and will do for you. But when you think of it first, you are positioning it to work for you.
In this episode of The emPowered Author Podcast, Stephanie chats with Sandy Wiles, website designer and developer, and goes a bit deeper into how to use an author website. Your website is a living, breathing tool to help you accomplish your goals. Don’t just build the website, use it. In today’s episode, we leave you with a slew of ways for you to consider.
The “Ready to Build Your Website Preparedness Kit” will provide you with insights on everything you need to make your website development experience easy-peasy and run smoothly. 12.6 The Step-by-Step Guide to Self-Publish Your Book

Ever gone out to dinner alone? It’s not something I do regularly, but found myself sitting at a farm to table restaurant that made each plate from scratch at order while on my CEO retreat. The 45-minute wait was worth every minute, however the time I sat waiting for it was an opportunity for a lot of conversation time with me, myself and I.
In normal Stephanie fashion, I found myself exploring the farm to table process and then quickly jumped to the manuscript to book process. (Y’all... I was on a business CEO retreat. What do you expect?!)
I decided to leverage the inspiration and use it as a launchpad for the final podcast episode in Season 12 on Self-Publishing. On this episode, I walk you through our “farm to table” approach on how to bring your book to life!
Marketing should emPower you, not be the bane of your existence. (I see you, author... and I know that you likely despise the word and all that comes with it!) From the moment I met Julie Wanzer, I knew she was a rockstar.
Was it her energy? Possibly! She’s filled to the brim with more positivity than I thought one person could hold. Was it her passion? For sure! She loves what she does and it shows. But when I really knew we could be besties was when I learned that her forthcoming book was on LinkedIn! (And if you’ve been around her for a while, you know my stance on the platform. It’s one of the two nonnegotiables I believe every author needs.)
Reading her book was a joy, but spending time with her recording this podcast was even more! Together, Julie and I are moving LinkedIn mountains for authors, and we hope you become emPowered to embrace all the platform has to offer. Tune in to this episode and get some LinkedIn tips you will want to write down and use immediately!

9.5 YouTube Offers Authors Endless Book Marketing Opportunities

Does the camera make your hands sweat and your voice crack or do you get a rush of adrenaline and ideas right when you hit record? I’ve likely not found as polarizing of viewpoints with authors outside of talking about the differing feelings of sharing a message through the written word and through the spoken word. Some love it and many despise it. But most will agree that it’s not going away and its here to stay. Video is important in message sharing, which is why on this episode of The emPowered Author Podcast, we are taking about YouTube.
It is a social platform that is integrated on other social platforms... and it also serves another purpose. It’s a search engine. You may go to Google for info. But when you are looking for how-to, YouTube is top of the list. It’s not the place people go to for mindless scrolling. Facebook and Instagram have that covered. However when people come to YouTube, they are on a mission. My goal today is to help make you that mission.
