The Edtech Podcast - #191 - What Matters In Edtech ASIA
play

04/13/20 • 63 min

Our podcast collaboration with Bett, What Matters in Edtech, is back, this time with a focus on global education. This podcast series is all about the things that matter in education, and how and when tech might help.

What's in this episode?

In our first episode, we focus on Asia and the current challenges and insights from this region. Asia was the first region to see the impact of COVID-19 on the education system and school closures.

We speak to a range of educators and partners in the region to talk about their approach to teaching and learning both before and during the Coronavirus crisis.

What tools and pedagogies are they utilising to best serve their students in the here and now, and also prepare local youth for the connected digital world in the long-term? And just how has Coronavirus expedited or frustrated these strategies in the region.

You’ll also hear about robust technology developed to take on one of the harshest environments out there – space - and how this is being adapted to fulfil large data research projects in this current time.

You can follow the conversation using #edtechpodcast and #BettASIA

The Edtech Podcast - 162 - Competency-Based Education in China
play

09/13/19 • 37 min

What's in this episode?

Hello everyone!

In this week’s episode, we travel nearly 5000 miles from the UK to China, to talk about increasing interest in competency based education. Plus, a listener news item on a new partnership on UK Maths Edtech. First up, you’ll hear Edtech Podcast listener Sonnie Tan interviewing the Founder of KitCat, Michael Huang. In this interview with Sonnie, Michael talks about how he think the Gaokao exam will slowly develop to recognise student’s more creative needs, as well as knowledge of cutting edge technologies, and how to apply them, such as AI. Our second interview is with Yiwei Zhang, Director of International EdTech Projects at Rayee. Rayee is a knowledge provider on education within China, with a focus on well-rounded education rather than the exam-orientated K-12 after school tutoring market that you may have heard a lot about. In this recording you’ll hear from Yiwei about how shopping malls are providing space for students to broaden their learning, whilst their parents enjoy some recreation. What do you think about this set up?

Stay in touch and have a great week!

Karine and Rose meet this week to discuss Ofsted ratings, how AI can transform teachers' day-to-day tasks, and interview friend and colleague Dr Fiona Aubrey Smith on the recent publication of her book: From EdTech to PedTech: Changing the Way We Think About Digital Technology. Aimed at teachers and leaders looking to create greater impact on teaching and learning through the use of digital technology in schools, From EdTech to PedTech translates research on the effective integration of digital technology in education into relevant, accessible, and practical guidance for teachers and school leaders. This much-needed handbook bridges the gap between knowing ‘what works’ and knowing how to make it work for you and your learners.

Ofsted's rating can be transformative and catastrophic. Given Karine's experience as a headteacher, what does she think of its one-word proclamations? Also under discussion is the DfE's call for submission of evidence regarding the opportunities and risks of AI in education, and their recently published report on generative AI, available to view below.

Material discussed in this episode includes:

The Edtech Podcast - #159 - How to develop the team who will deliver change
play

08/13/19 • 51 min

What's in this episode?

Hello everyone!

In this episode, we’re travelling back to (the) Future Edtech conference where a panel of Higher Education leaders discuss how to develop the team that delivers change in the context of institutional capability and leadership development for the "21st Century University". You will hear about how saying no to change is embracing the status quo, academic and professional services collaboration as central towards bringing about change, and why downloading board papers digitally shouldn’t be beyond the University SLT. We also think about value and the tussle between liberal education and University as a bridge to work.

Stay in touch and have a great week!
