The Documentary Filmmaker Podcast - S2 Ep. 24 Why a format will help you make better videos
play

07/26/22 ‱ 11 min

Format. Now that word probably sounds about as sparkly to you as ‘spreadsheet’. Or ‘data analysis’. Or – shudder – ‘budget’

But please don’t click pause! I promise you that the context I’m about to use the word format in can excite you. Because in this blog post I’ m steering my focus to video formats. Why? Well, I firmly believe that crafting a video format is one of the best ways to woo your audience and keep them coming back to your content.

I employ a format for almost every video I create – from 2 minute shorts for my company website, to impact documentary films that are shared on the silver screen, right though to the weekly Moonshine Moonshot series I produce with my co-host Mike Hill.

So what’s the deal with formats?

For one, they will dictate the general shape of your video. But it shouldn’t be confused with its genre. Let’s say your genre is ‘talk show’. That’s great. It might also run for 27 minutes, starting with a 5 minute guest introduction, followed by a 20 minute conversation and concluding with a 2 minute outro where you thank you guest and ask viewers to tune in next week. Now that’s your format.
I explain further in the episode.

Welcome back filmmakers! it's now time for you to start thinking outside of your film... I’m not trying to be deep or metaphorical here!
Your documentary is the centerpiece of a network of different materials that all compliment each other, and one element of this network is the website.
And yes! You do need to start thinking about your website in pre-production. You can never be too careful when it comes to website development. Maybe it will take weeks or maybe it will take months. But it will definitely be a gamble.

The Documentary Filmmaker Podcast - Ep. 43 How to pitch your film

Ep. 43 How to pitch your film

The Documentary Filmmaker Podcast

play

12/05/22 ‱ 19 min

This week, I show you how to create a pitch video and sell your film to potential funders.
If you’re an aspiring documentary filmmaker with an important story to share, there’s one thing you need to get straight how to pitch your film to potential funders.
Ah yes, the dreaded ‘p” word. If you’ve been keeping across the How to make a documentary series, I'm sure you knew this one was coming up.
Last week, I looked closely at crafting a compelling proposal. And the week before that I zoned in on pre-interviews, which are often used as part of pitching your film idea. Now the time has come to really dig into it.
The thought of pitching leaves most filmmakers with an icky pang in the pit of their stomachs. Maybe it’s because it implies a certain level of salesmanship and we’re “creatives”. Maybe it’s because the idea of “pitching” and what it means is still a bit blurry or perhaps it’s because pitching can be connected to public speaking and public speaking is rated as a greater fear than death.
Maybe your worried about all of the above. And quite possibly it’s also because your film really matters to you and you want to get the green light to make it. So the answer to your pitch is very important to you. No one wants to get a no. Not from a potential funder.
But, if you want to make a film – a really, really good film – you do need to learn to embrace the concept of pitching and raise some finance.
Pitches put you front and centre with decision makers who can finance and champion your film. In short: if you want to bring your vision to life, you need to master the process.
Listen now and I'll show you how!

The Documentary Filmmaker Podcast - How to distribute your film

How to distribute your film

The Documentary Filmmaker Podcast

play

06/07/20 ‱ 17 min

How to distribute your film? Long gone are the days where engaging a distributor was the key to getting your film out into the word.

Self-distribution has become far more common and having control over your film and where its shown can have enormous benefits to both yourself as the filmmaker and your audience.

So what are the ways to distribute your film and what role can a distributor play in the mix? Here are a few:

Video on Demand (i.e. Netflix, Amazon Prime)

  • Cinema on Demand (Tugg or Demand Film)
  • Hosted screenings
  • YouTube
  • Vimeo (has great tools for selling directly to your audience)
  • DVD/ Blu-ray (yes there are still some uses for DVD)
  • Broadcast Television
  • Theatrical release (Cinema)
  • Social media (Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn)

Many of these, particularly Cinema on Demand, Hosted Screenings, YouTube and Social Media you can easily be set up by you aka self-distribution. You can go direct to broadcasters but this is where a distributor can be really beneficial. They go to all the markets and have contacts for all the broadcasters around the world. They’re going to be much better at getting your film in front of the right folks and negotiating deals- this is their specialist area. Of course, you can do it yourself but it’s extremely time-consuming. A theatrical release can also be much better handled by a distributor unless you have good contacts to set it up yourself.

It really comes down to you and your hopes for your film. Where are your audience and what are your goals? Are you planning a broad release to get it in front of as many eyeballs as possible or is it niche and you want a very specific group of people to see it?
