Dr. Hakwan Lau is Principal Investigator for the Laboratory for Consciousness at Riken Institute. He works on the neural mechanisms of conscious perception, attention, and sensory metacognition, using human fMRI and Bayesian computational modeling. He is the author of In Consciousness We Trust: The Cognitive Neuroscience of Subjective Experience.
In this episode, we focus on In Consciousness We Trust. We talk about approaching consciousness from the perspective of cognitive neuroscience, and issues with approaches from physics and philosophy. We discuss different notions of consciousness, and the distinction between global and local theories of consciousness. We talk about the neural correlates of consciousness line of research, lesion and simulation studies, and localizationist and modular perspectives of the brain. We also talk about Michael Gazzaniga, the split-brain patients, and the interpretative theory of consciousness. We discuss the functions of consciousness. We talk about what we can learn from AI research. We discuss what we really know about animal consciousness, and if AI can be conscious. We talk about how social and clinical scientists approach consciousness. Finally, we discuss the hard problem of consciousness. --

Dr. Émile Torres is a researcher at Leibniz Universität Hannover, in Germany. Their work over the past decade has centered around a single theme: eschatology, whether religious, secular, or scientific. Recently, their work has been focused on the nature and causes of human extinction, its ethical implications, and the history of the idea. They are the author of Morality, Foresight, and Human Flourishing: An Introduction to Existential Risks, and their latest book is Human Extinction: A History of the Science and Ethics of Annihilation.
In this episode, we focus on Human Extinction. We start by discussing how old the idea of human extinction is in Western history. We then talk about five existential moods across history, and get into anthropogenic extinction, natural causes of extinction, and the existential mood of our current moment. We discuss what people might mean by “human” and “extinction”. Finally, we talk about ideas in favor of human extinction.

Dr. Branko Milanović is Presidential Professor at the Graduate Center and a senior fellow at the Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality at The City University of New York (CUNY). Dr. Milanović’s main area of work is income inequality, in individual countries and globally, as well as historically, among pre-industrial societies (Roman Empire, Byzantium, and France before the Revolution), and even inequality in soccer. His latest book is Visions of Inequality: From the French Revolution to the End of the Cold War.
In this episode, we focus on Visions of Inequality. We start by talking about how long people have been thinking about economic inequality, and the elements of the best income distribution studies. We then go through the work of authors like François Quesnay, Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Karl Marx, Vilfredo Pareto, and Simon Kuznets, and how there was a natural progression across them. We discuss how and why studies of income distribution went into retreat during the Cold War era; the rise of neoliberalism and its consequences; and what led to the revival of economic studies. We also talk about a recent expansion in our understanding of the dynamics of inequality, with race and gender inequality. Finally, we discuss Dr. Milanović’s goals with this book.
