Dr. Hakwan Lau is Principal Investigator for the Laboratory for Consciousness at Riken Institute. He works on the neural mechanisms of conscious perception, attention, and sensory metacognition, using human fMRI and Bayesian computational modeling. He is the author of In Consciousness We Trust: The Cognitive Neuroscience of Subjective Experience.

In this episode, we focus on In Consciousness We Trust. We talk about approaching consciousness from the perspective of cognitive neuroscience, and issues with approaches from physics and philosophy. We discuss different notions of consciousness, and the distinction between global and local theories of consciousness. We talk about the neural correlates of consciousness line of research, lesion and simulation studies, and localizationist and modular perspectives of the brain. We also talk about Michael Gazzaniga, the split-brain patients, and the interpretative theory of consciousness. We discuss the functions of consciousness. We talk about what we can learn from AI research. We discuss what we really know about animal consciousness, and if AI can be conscious. We talk about how social and clinical scientists approach consciousness. Finally, we discuss the hard problem of consciousness. --

Mélusine Boon-Falleur is a PhD student in cognitive sciences at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) Paris, researching how evolution shaped our brain. She is particularly interested in studying how individuals adapt to the amount of resources available in their environment, and how our social cognition influences pro-environmental behavior.

In this episode, we focus on how resources impact psychology, and climate change. We start by talking about noncognitive skills and their impact on academic achievement. We then get into how quantitative changes in resources lead to qualitative changes in people’s priorities and psychology. We discuss the importance of time horizons, and talk about pyramids of needs. We discuss how resource allocation affects cooperation and health-related behavior. We discuss risky behaviors through different time horizons, and approaches to prevent hazardous behaviors. We talk about where stereotypes about the behavior of people of low socioeconomic status come from. We discuss how people formed perceived morbidity and mortality risks associated with COVID-19. We talk about the belief-action gap and what explains it. We discuss the labeling of behaviors as “irrational”. Finally, we talk about the social dilemma of climate change and the cognitive mechanisms that play a role in environmental policies, and the important role of social scientists in helping tackle climate change.

Dr. Hanno Sauer is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Utrecht University. His main research interests are in moral psychology and empirically informed metaethics. He is interested in whether and how we can bring empirical data from diverse disciplines such as social psychology, neuroscience or cognitive science to bear on questions of normative and/or metaethical interests, and what the limits of this approach are. His latest book is Moral Teleology: A Theory of Progress.

In this episode, we focus on Moral Teleology. We start by discussing what moral progress is, if it is possible, and we get into a moral anti-realist account of moral progress. We talk about how we can naturalize teleology. We discuss moral regress, and reactionary conservatism. Finally, we talk about institutions of moral progress, and what causes it.

Dr. Lydia Moland is a Professor of Philosophy at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where she teaches courses on moral philosophy, aesthetics, and the history of modern philosophy. For most of her career, she has written on nineteenth-century German philosophy. Recently, she turned her attention to her own country and to women. She discovered the work of American abolitionist Lydia Maria Child, on whom she wrote a book titled Lydia Maria Child: A Radical American Life (2022).

In this episode, we talk about 19th-century German philosophy, and abolitionism in the US. We discuss what characterizes German philosophy, particularly the topic of subjectivism. We get into Hegel’s philosophy, and his work on aesthetics and the arts, tragedy and comedy, and modern subjectivity in art. We talk about Hegel and Marx, and their views on capitalism, society, and poverty. We discuss how 19th-century philosophers took laughter seriously. Finally, we talk about abolitionism in the US, the work of Lydia Maria Child, and we discuss what we should make of politically motivated philosophy.

Dr. Ann-Sophie Barwich is Assistant Professor of History and Philosophy of Science and Cognitive Science at Indiana University Bloomington. She is a cognitive scientist and empirical philosopher & historian of science, technology, and the senses. She divides her brain-time between the Department of History & Philosophy of Science and the Cognitive Science Program. Estimated begin of lab (EEG/Olfactometry) in early 2021. She’s the author of Smellosophy: What the Nose tells the Mind.

In this episode, we start off by talking about the scientific method, how it evolved over time, the difficulties in defining or characterizing it. We refer to the fact that different branches of science and of philosophy of science approach their objects of study in different ways; the place for fiction in science, and how we should think about modelling in science; empirical success; a minority view on the replication crisis, and the importance of failure in the scientific process; falsification, and the demarcation problem. Then, we get into Dr. Barwich’s work on the sense of olfaction, how it works, and a new view it gives us of how the brain works more broadly, and also how it reframes certain questions and big topics in the philosophy of neuroscience.

All of you were extremely kind and helpful over these past few months.

I feel very humbled and grateful from the bottom of my heart to you all!

But I am still going through hard times.

In order to sustain the channel, and even to support myself I need your help.

I am trying to get another job to complement what I am getting from the channel, but you certainly now that that is extremely difficult at the moment, due to the impact coronavirus is having on the economy across the globe.

I am going to try my very best, but I am desperate. If you appreciate what I am doing, and have some money you could spare, please help me!

For these past two years and four months, I have brought on the show some of the top academics/scholars in a diversity of fields, like Psychology, Anthropology, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Philosophy, and even Literary Studies.

On my show, you can certainly find informative, well-researched, engaging, and fun interviews on topics that will feed your intellectual interest.

My income for these past two years has depended completely on the donations made by my charitable patrons and Paypal supporters, but, unfortunately, it is not enough.

In today’s society, scientific literacy is ever more important, and, hopefully, I have been contributing to spread knowledge outside of academia in a format that I try my best to be accessible even to laypeople.

So I ask you to please consider supporting me on the platforms I link here. I am leaving a link to my Patreon page and links to monthly subscriptions on Paypal, and also a link to Paypal for a one-time big donation, if you prefer, if any of you would be generous enough to become a patron or give me a one-time big donation.

Dr. Christian B. Miller is the A. C. Reid Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University. His research is primarily in contemporary ethics and philosophy of religion. He has written for the Wall Street Journal, Dallas Morning News, Slate, Prospect Magazine, Relevant Magazine, Michael Hyatt Magazine, The Conversation, Newsweek, Aeon, Greater Good Magazine, Nautilus Magazine, Fathom Magazine, Institute of Art and Ideas, and Christianity Today. He’s the author of several books, the most recent one being Honesty: The Philosophy and Psychology of a Neglected Virtue.

In this episode, we talk about the virtues of generosity and patience. We start with generosity, and discuss the distinction between generous actions, acting from generosity, and being a generous person. We also discuss if generous actions need to be costly, why motivation matters, if the action needs to be freely done, what makes someone a generous person, and how generous we tend to be. We then get into patience, and talk about the importance of goals, time, emotions, and motivation in patience. We also address general questions about the virtues, including what they are really about – character, or the good they bring to other people -; the difference between continence and virtue; and moral and epistemic/intellectual virtues. --
