Calibrate your growth on your behaviors and actions
The College Success Habits Podcast
05/09/23 • 23 min
Ep #178 - So you set out to make changes in your life. How do you know that your actions work for you and not against you? In today's episode, we dive into calibrating your personal growth and changes on your behavior, not your intentions.
Intentions are words. Behavior is your actions. Actions speak louder than words. It's pretty easy to say you will do something and then justify why you are still participating in the activity you told yourself was going to go bye-bye.
Today is the day to start making that change because you are not stuck...you are standing still.
Just hit play, and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies, bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now.
It is time. It has been time. To live is to shine. Step into the SUN.
Stand up, step forward, raise your hand - it's your turn, head the call!

The First Year Experience w/ Jessica Cerda
The College Success Habits Podcast
04/11/20 • 40 min
Ep #47 - In this week's episode, I welcome Los Angeles City College's First-Year Experience program director Jessica Cerda to the show. We discuss how to manage your time, handle the stressors college inevitably heaps upon you, and how, no matter the campus, there is help and assistance in the form of: counselors, therapists, advisors, etc. available to guide you through the maze that is the college experience.
While this was recorded before the novel coronavirus and subsequent quarantine took over our society, I still think what Jessica talks about is relevant as there are tens of thousands of high school students about to embark on the amazing journey that is college. There are equally as many students that have had their first year experiences halted as it was just gaining momentum - and I think all of you in the early stages of your university life will have some massive catching up to do when the schools reopen in the fall (fingers-crossed.)
Here's my best wishes that all of you make it through this healthy and without the loss of a loved one. Be ready for next semester because things will return to some semblance of normalcy at some point and you want to have momentum in hand rather than starting from a stand still.
Thank you so much for listening and being a part of this community. I truly appreciate your support.

Words are just words until you attach meaning to them
The College Success Habits Podcast
04/13/22 • 45 min
Ep #133 - Your words are just words. Other people's words are just words. Once you hear yourself say them to yourself or others or once someone says something to you or around you - that is the moment you attach a meaning to the word(s) being used. We tend to say things to ourselves before we speak them out loud. Even when you say something and ask yourself, "where did that come from?" Oh, trust me, you thought it or something close to it before you ever said those words to someone.
We filter everything we are going to say through our mind before it is spoken. Our thoughts are so plentiful during a day we are not consciously aware of a majority of them. Think about this, you have 50,000 thoughts a day, according to many studies I have researched, and other studies claim more than that - so when you doubt you ever thought something before you said it, I assure you, you weren't keeping track of all 50,000 thoughts you had today.
The words you and others use are just words. They have definitions we as a society agreed upon at some point, even if it was just in their use in the proper context of the words definition. The feeling you attach to a word, that is all you.
If you get offended, triggered, or otherwise negatively influenced by a word used around, near, or at you, well, that is on you because you choose to have the reaction to that word in the moment. If you give little credence to the person saying the word, then you are likely to care way less or feel way less emotional than if a person you respect, admire, or look up to says it to you.
When we denigrate someone for using words we find offensive and ostracize them from the tribe we do not extinguish their use of the word or the feelings they desired to elicit upon their use of the word. No, no, no...what we as a society are guilty of is the ostracization of the offending person into the shadows where they will inevitably seek out others who will embrace them for using the perceived offensive word.
That might sting to read, "perceived offensive" word, because there are certain words we, as a society, think we have agreed are down right offensive. Ah, that is not really the case. There are some people who do not think or feel using certain words are offensive, or if they do think others will be offended then they are more likely to use that word toward or around someone hoping to evoke a negative reaction.
There is so much more I can write about this but the show explains it well enough so...
Just hit play and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now.
It is time. It has been time. To live is to shine. Step into the SUN.
Stand up, step forward, raise your hand - it's your turn, I will call on you.

Re-programming and de-programming your mind
The College Success Habits Podcast
03/24/22 • 44 min
Ep #131 - College is a wonderful opportunity to challenge your current way of thinking and feeling around your opinions, beliefs, and values. You do not have to give up anything in your pursuit of clarifications and further development of your personality - in fact, it is in the pursuit of growth you are able to increase your empathy and understanding of how others have created their opinions, beliefs, and values.
It seems the "cancel culture" has taken such a firm grip on our institutions that any conversation about the who, what, when, where, why, and how's each individual created their current way of thinking is barely a part of the conversation - and if it is a part of the conversation it is swept aside in favor of calling the person an IST or defining their behavior as an ISM.
People, institutions (like higher-education,) organizations, businesses, governments, etc., want to cancel others, or scream louder than them, in a vain attempt to squash or silence dissenting opinions, beliefs, and values.
The missed opportunities to explore one another and decipher how our minds created the views we have is destroying us as a culture, citizenry, and planet.
Am I sounding way overboard or have you noticed this too? When we shut someone down who's opinion of a social issue is different than ours, we do not change their mind, we do not gravitate them toward our thinking - we push them away, we isolate them, or worse...we magnetize them toward others with the same opinion and that actually gives them power. Power they would not have even searched for had they been given the chance to explain themselves.
The future of US, not the U-S but the plural US, is being determined today by our ability or inability to listen to someone else with an open-heart, rational thinking, and emotional intelligence.
It is time. It has been time. To live is to shine. Step into the SUN.
Just hit play and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now.
Stand up, step forward, raise your hand - it's your turn, I will call on you.

Your words solidify your programming
The College Success Habits Podcast
04/05/22 • 37 min
Ep #132 - Continuing the conversation from last week, we dive into the words you use in your head toward yourself and how they are not benefitting you in your journey of personal growth and life enhancement in your life, let alone in your higher education journey.
We can push those that disagree with us into the shadows because history has shown that totally works in silencing them. Instead, let us first release the harsh judgements and criticisms of ourselves. Inside your head, there is a slew of random thoughts that come across your awareness everyday.
How do you talk to yourself?
Where do you know there is a more desirable way to communicate with yourself to yourself?
When are you now ready to embrace this new communication in your life?
Our society, our culture, our world has been beating ourselves up long enough. First sit down with yourself and agree to be kinder to yourself - that is a beautiful start.
It is time. It has been time. To live is to shine. Step into the SUN.
Just hit play and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now.
Stand up, step forward, raise your hand - it's your turn, I will call on you.

Stigma Part 1: ”If I can do it, so can you”
The College Success Habits Podcast
12/01/22 • 39 min
Ep #160 - Stigmatizing language is pervasive in our societies. When someone compares their life to another's in a way that insinuates they had it tougher or rougher because of their age, race, creed, color, etc. they are comparing themselves and their life to someone else's while deleting out an infinite amount of information that doesn't make the comparison even remotely equal.
Claiming someone has race, religion, age, country, generational privilege is thrusting upon them the responsibility to feel ashamed or guilty for something they may or may not have had happened to them. Imagine this for a moment. The idea that someone is being told, "well I did this, that, and the other, and I am BLANK, and you had it way better than me, so what's your problem?"
How does that read to you? How does that sound when you say it out loud? I hear judgement and rudeness. I have no idea what another person has gone through in order to be the person I am seeing in front of me right now. When I attempt to compare what I've gone through versus what I think I know they have gone through I am comparing and deleting at the same time.
Most people won't know, and perhaps they'll never know, why they behave and do the things they do. So much of our behaviors and habits are programmed into us at such a young age we have no idea where they are rooted. Your life is singularly yours and mine and everyone else's is singular ours.
Thinking you know what someone else has gone through simply by judging their outside or talking with them is outside the lines of harmonious behavior. It is time we as a world talk to one another by listening to learn about each other rather than waiting for our chance to talk, argue, and cancel them.
Just hit play and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now.
It is time. It has been time. To live is to shine. Step into the SUN.

The Six Core Human Needs
The College Success Habits Podcast
04/28/22 • 57 min
Ep #134 - What motivates you at your core? Knowing this will bring to your awareness what needs your are seeking to meet when you do anything you do. It will also alert you to why you quit the things you quit.
At an unconscious level our mind is seeking to fulfill critical human needs in every action it has you participating in. You think you are consciously making decisions, yet there are drivers inside you that fuel, motivate, and draw you toward the action and behaviors you turn into patterns and habits.
I am not showing you how you are attaching these needs in your life, I am bringing this needs out of your subconscious mind and bringing them into your conscious awareness.
After this episode, which is admirably longer than usual, you mind will expand deeply around how you use these six core human needs to drive you toward that which you continue and that which you quit.
Just hit play and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now.

Fulfillment & Ego
The College Success Habits Podcast
05/06/22 • 26 min
Ep #135 - Do you find yourself not feeling fulfilled when you achieve something or fulfill a needs in your life. You know how it feels to be satisfied and to look in the mirror and feel you did your best work. If you accomplish something and you don't feel good about yourself the main problem you might run into is that your expectations of what it would look like to succeed and what it actually looks like are far off from one another.
Fulfillment of your needs is something you have been making a priority in your life and satisfying these needs will continue to be a primary focus of your life until the end. The question to ask yourself is this...am I seeking to fulfill my needs in a mature, reasonable, and resourceful manner or am I seeking to achieve them through my egotistical, kid driven self?
When nothing is ever enough, your kid ego is running the show. When you are satisfied with your result, even if it doesn't result in adulation and acclaim, then you are in your seat of mature, wisdom driven experiencing.
Trust me on this, if the kid ego is in charge achieving satisfaction will literally be a fruitless endeavor. When you are in your seat of maturity, your accomplishments will be fulfilling and satisfying regardless of the level of social prestige you gain.
Just hit play and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now.
It is time. It has been time. To live is to shine. Step into the SUN.

Adaptability in an uncertain world w/ Thom Rigsby
The College Success Habits Podcast
09/03/20 • 54 min
Being adaptable and flexible will relieve stress and anxiety when you layout plans and begin working toward your goals and outcomes. What that adaptability and flexibility looks like to you will be different than that of the person next to you - but there are enough similarities that we can begin to strategize together ways to be prepared when the world throws a pandemic at us.
Business coach Thom Rigsby joins us to discuss how your time in college can be seen through the eyes of running a small business. Many of the strategies that are so useful in the working world have a direct correlation to your schooling career.
You are learning so much about yourself during this time in college. Let's step back from the day-to-day hecticness that is your university life and get into how you can add the skills you will need to increase your adaptability. Your career outlook can change on a dime. Your financial stability can be rocked to its core. It is all on you to take control of your career and life trajectory and you can start doing that right now, today, in college, and the amount of effort won't be that much different than the energy you are expending worrying and stressing about the uncertainty that has become the norm.
