I met Dr. Mitchell over zoom introduced to me by my white college professor Dr. Beer. I was struggling with various thoughts. How can be an educator in business school? That our creativity humanizes us and we are working to see each other reflected within each other. Thank you Dr. Mitchell for continuing to be an inspiration to me.

THE CHAIR (S1/Ep30) — A Knock At My Door

I was introduced to Juwan through my mother. Juwan is a local politician. He is in the communities and advocating to guide for local resources. Come learn how he got into local politics and what the church has to do with his hair journey.

His Bio:

Greetings, Neighbors,

My name is Juwan K. Skeens, and I am proud to be your candidate for Boston City Council, representing District 4 in 2025!

Born and raised in Dorchester, I’m a proud African American whose family has owned property in the neighborhood for over 50 years. As a Boston Public School graduate of The Joseph Lee School, Timilty Middle School, and Excel High School, I honed my leadership skills early on as a Junior Varsity Debate Champion with the Boston Debate League and as Senior Class President.

My passion for service deepened as the Neighborhood Liaison to District 4 under then-City Council President Andrea Campbell (2016–2018). In this role, I had the privilege of connecting neighbors and businesses across Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan to city, state, and federal resources. I attended zoning board meetings, worked with nearly 20 civic associations monthly, and initiated impactful projects like Grove Hall in Color and the Boston Youth Expo, empowering youth and families with opportunities.

My mission is simple: to ensure that our community has the representation, resources, and voice it deserves.

Rebecca and I met in graduate school at UCLA. Studying to become teachers. We became fast friends and I fell for her because of conversations surrounding hip hop, teaching art, and our mutual love for the art of drag. I've had the opportunity to see evolutions of Rebecca as the teacher to the coach and now the dancer. It is beautiful to watch someone who finds their joy everyday and nothing gets in the way of that anymore.

Her Bio:

Rebecca has worked with K-12 students in public elementary schools and non-profit programs in Los Angeles for over 13 years. She earned her Master's Degree in Education as well as her Multiple Subject teaching credential from UCLA, where she taught 5th grade Math and Science in East Los Angeles. She worked as a Program Manager for P.S.ARTS overseeing Teaching Artists in Visual, Music, Theater, and Dance programs in districts across Los Angeles. Her recent work includes Arts Integration coaching for classroom teachers, as well as instructional aide work in Special Education classrooms. She currently oversees curriculum and educator development for Symphonic Jazz Orchestra in Los Angeles. In her free time she enjoys training in various genres of dance including Tap, Hip Hop, and Contemporary.

THE CHAIR (S1/Ep28) — The Secret Black Meeting

Periana and I met in college and as she says in the interview the rest is history. Periana is a magical human being with a heart that grows bigger every day and I wanted this opportunity to give her her flowers. She led the charge to get the approval of the African American Studies minor turned into a major on Lake Forest College campus. Because of her, many many students and generations to come will have the ability to see themselves and various perspectives of the cultural disapora in their assignments and in their dreams for their futures. Periana is one of a kind and is absolutely living Black History.

Her Bio:

Periana resides in the DFW area, but was born and raised on the west side of Chicago. She is a wife, a mama to two beautiful girls (Kai and Kobe), a foodie, and so much more. Periana spent the bulk of her career in higher education, supporting and advocating for first generation, low income, and underrepresented student populations. Currently, she is working to improve maternal health outcomes, especially for Black and Brown mamas who are disproportionately affected by the maternal healthcare crisis, and she plans to become a full spectrum doula within the next year or so.
