What if “Miata” Really Is the Answer? — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 3
The Carmudgeon Show
11/13/19 • 22 min
Some people dismiss the Mazda MX-5 Miata as a hairdresser’s car. Others think it’s the answer to all automotive questions. Does the truth lie somewhere between these two extreme positions — or is one of them actually right? Derek just bought a heavily modified NA Miata with Öhlins dampers on it, and it’s great. Jason had a stock NA and it wasn’t. The boys can both agree that NB is meh, turbos have no place in Miatas so the MazdaSpeed is out, but where do they fall on NC, NC2, ND? Was ND1 terrible and ND2 fixed it? Also, should Jason kill Derek? Tune in to find out.

The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled 25-minute conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.
Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on YouTube alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile — and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with.
Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering — which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.

Why you should care about the Scottsdale auctions, Scottsdale Special – The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 12
The Carmudgeon Show
01/21/20 • 50 min
We’ve just spent the week in Scottsdale, Arizona for the annual collector-car auction spectacular, visiting the auctions put on by Gooding & Company, Bonhams, Barrett-Jackson, Russo and Steele, RM Southebys, and Leake. In this special episode of the Carmudgeon Show, filmed on location in Scottsdale, Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott discuss why these auctions are important even to car nerds who aren’t big-dollar collectors.
Now that the Radwood-era cars are finally getting recognition (how about a Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II selling for $434,000?), are we witnessing a generational shift in the auctions? After all, a Mercedes 6.3 sold for less than a tenth as much. And are the “blue-chip” mega-expensive investment-grade cars like the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing in trouble when things like a GMC Typhoon show up at auction? Why are the special double-washers that hold the seats into a Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS just as important as the yellow-stitched seatbelts?
We get a look into Hyphen’s massive encyclopedic knowledge on this episode as we take a closer look at a bunch of cool cars, rough cars, beautiful cars, and very expensive cars. But when less than 5% of collector cars are traded in public, live auctions, what do these sale prices really mean? And what do they really mean for the rest of us?

The 1001-hp Classic Car — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 26
The Carmudgeon Show
05/06/20 • 48 min
The Bugatti Veyron went into production 15 years ago, which means it’s now old enough to be considered a classic car in some places. Derek and Jason take a minute to discuss what was the fastest car in the world, the most expensive car in the world, and surely one of the most momentous automotive engineering projects in recent history.
Fresh off the heels off of the first episode of ISSIMI’s new “Spotlight” show, where Jason features the Veyron Super Sport 300 — the last-ever Veyron coupe produced — the boys discuss the two different generations of Veyron (the first, 1001-hp car was available in coupe “EB 16.4” and convertible “Grand Sport” form — the second, 1200-hp Veyron was also available as a coupe (“Super Sport”) and convertible (“Grand Sport Vitesse.”)
They reveal insider stories like the differences between Burmester and Puccini stereos in the cars, and what it’s like to drive vintage Bugattis (like Peter Mullin’s 1933 Type 51 that Jason drove on a Bugatti rally.) But really, this is just a discussion looking back at the Veyron’s incredible accomplishments.

The new normal for car nerds — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 22
The Carmudgeon Show
04/09/20 • 46 min
Quarantine and lockdown can’t stop the boys from being Carmudgeons, so nothing has really changed, except that Derek and Jason recorded this episode while in different counties. This episode, recorded at what is likely to be just the start of the Coronavirus’ global impact, discusses the likelihood that the pandemic does nothing but accelerate the changes we’ve already begun to see in the automotive world.
What will happen to car values? Will blue-chip collector cars underperform relative to cars that can be driven? What about auto auctions? Or car magazines? Or even the car companies themselves?
And, Jason wants to know, will the pandemic help reinforce our appreciation for fact-based journalism instead of social-media influencers fighting over $400,000 watches given to them?
We can’t know for sure, but these two Carmudgeons certainly have their opinions. And one thing’s for sure: no global pandemic is going to change their love for cars.

The Testarossa is not what you think — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 27
The Carmudgeon Show
05/13/20 • 61 min
There is perhaps no more iconic 1980s supercar than the Ferrari Testarossa. But the Testarossa has a big secret: it’s not a supercar. Oh, it has the performance in spades — but it’s actually a civilized grand tourer in personality.
That’s what surprises nearly everyone who drives one for the first time. It’s comfortable. Exceedingly quiet. It rides well. Other than unassisted steering and being wider than a full-size pickup truck, the Testarossa is an easy car to drive. Once it’s warmed up, that is.
On this week’s episode, Derek and Jason discuss all things Testarossa - from its crankiness when cold to its beginnings as a 365 BB and 512BB and its ending as a 512TR and 512M. BB has never stood for Berlinetta Boxer — how could it, when the Testarossa’s red-headed flat-12 isn’t a “boxer” engine? (It’s a flat-12, a horizontally opposed 12, or a 180-degree V-12, but not a Boxer, because opposing pistons share crankpins.)
Also, they discuss whether its BB name stands for Berlinetta Bialbero (twin-cam coupe, which would be weird because Ferrari already had a DOHC version of its V-12) or whether it was actually named after Brigitte Bardot. Then, there are the Monospecchio cars with center-lock wheels versus the later cars with two mirrors and five-lug wheels.
And then there are the inevitable comparisons to the Lamborghinis - the Miura and Countach, as well as the BMW E31 8-series and the front-engine Ferrari GTs and sports cars, including the Daytona.

Behind the Scenes of the Latest Videos: M3, LFA, NSX Type-R — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 44
The Carmudgeon Show
06/14/21 • 64 min
In the latest and thoroughly overdue episode of The Carmudgeon Show, the boys spend an hour or so discussing their latest video projects: Jason’s just released Icons episode about the G80 M3 (which necessitates revisiting the E30 M3 and E46 M3 and of course the W201 Mercedes 190E 2.3-16), and Derek’s upcoming BTS with DTS episodes about the Lexus LFA and NA1 Honda NSX-R. They also discuss the recent rally they attended, which was not without drama (one car flew off a cliff) and their preferred type of driving and how certain cars are and aren’t suited to that. On that topic, Jason and Derek compare notes about the first generation NSX; Jason isn’t a huge fan, while Derek described the NSX-R as one of the best drives he’s ever had. In fact, Jason took a cashier’s check to buy a US-market NSX and came home empty handed because he wasn’t enthusiastic enough about how it drove.

Will your car be valuable one day? — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 35
The Carmudgeon Show
07/10/20 • 63 min
In this episode, Derek and Jason peer into the crystal ball to concoct the recipe for the perfect collectible car. What it comes down to is a number of factors; a checklist of characteristics.
Did the car represent an end of an era? Or if it was replaced, was its replacement fundamentally different in a bad way? How many units were made — only two cars to ever hit the million-dollar price tag were produced in greater than 1000 units — the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing and the Ferrari F40.
Don’t forget attrition: some cars were made in large numbers but typically destroyed by rust, abuse, neglect, or just use. Or lift-off oversteer.
Cars that are aberrations in their product lines (like the original GTI or the Mercedes Black Series cars) tend to do well. We can’t, of course, forget intrinsic desirability, nostalgia, and cars that represent the ultimate expression of their era: 1959 Cadillac’s fins, Aston Lagonda’s wedge styling. Don’t underestimate the cyclical nature of fashion: at one time, the Lamborghini Countach was seen as the car you buy if you can’t afford a new Lambo.
Four-door cars have historically underperformed, but the Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II shows a sea change. Perhaps that’s because, for the first time, many of the most desirable cars of the last 40 years were saloons: Lotus Carlton, BMW M5, etc.
Provenance of the marque plays a role — but it’s not a guarantee (hello, Ferrari 308 GT4), but speed and experience almost always win. Speed alone isn’t enough, because as cars get faster and faster, the experience is what becomes dominant. The same go for looks: great looks are necessary for collectibility but certainly not sufficient.
At the end of the day, Derek always counsels his clients to drive what makes them happy. Then, even if the car’s value doesn’t skyrocket, the ownership experience alone is enough to make it all worthwhile.
What an out-of-character optimistic view from a true curmudgeon. We’ll make sure Derek is far less happy next week.

Why We Love to Hate McLarens, Except the GOAT of Course (the F1) — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 43
The Carmudgeon Show
04/07/21 • 69 min
It’s no secret that neither Jason nor Derek love contemporary McLarens, despite them being objectively quite good. In this episode, they discuss the reasons why they feel this way, and also how modern McLarens are like a variety of foods including mirepoix, Mexican food, and turkey soup. Incidentally the exact opposite of these reasons is why they are both so enthusiastic about the McLaren F1 and the upcoming T.50. Naturally, this content is preceded by and interlaced with requisite tangents about 911s, e-Golfs, and Mark I Volkswagens. Also of note is Derek mentioning not one but two rear-engined Porsches that he *doesn’t* like.

The importance of a pre-purchase inspection — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 25
The Carmudgeon Show
04/29/20 • 52 min
Unless you just don’t care about anything, it’s wise to have a pre-purchase inspection, or PPI, on any car you’re purchasing. And not just by a random friend who can kick the tires for you, but by a marque expert. That’s especially important because more important than noting overall condition is finding things that aren’t “correct.”
Using the incorrect hose clamp isn’t a problem. Nor is the wrong bolt here or there. But recognizing those items’ incorrectness means that a mechanic has needed to touch that area, and that he either didn’t know which proper parts to use, or didn’t care. Anytime you see something incorrect, it points to something that should be investigated further. Most of the time, it’s meaningless; occasionally it can be evidence of something disastrous.
Both Jason and Derek have experience with Alfa Romeos that had been cut in half — and only noticed the evidence of welding once the car was in the air. And both of them have bought cars unseen - from Derek’s Daimler Double-Six to Jason’s $300 Isuzu P’Up.
In this episode, they exchange war stories of buying cars with and without PPIs. And why sometimes it’s necessary to show up with a baseball bat. Hey, pretending you’re crazy is a perfectly valid negotiation tactic. If you’re from Brooklyn. And stupid.

It had better be a Diesel— The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 30
The Carmudgeon Show
06/03/20 • 52 min
How much ground clearance do you need in an apocalypse vehicle? After all, running over zombies might damage the cooling system on your venerable Mercedes W123—which otherwise will be the official car of the cockroach, long after all other life forms on Earth have ended.
Surely we all know (except Derek) that Zombie Apocalypse vehicles need to be diesels, lest the zombies deactivate your spark-ignition system with their ray-guns. So that leaves out the Land Rover Defender gasoline versions, though those would just break down anyway. What about a Toyota Land Cruiser? Mercedes G-Class? Suzuki Samuai? Jeep Wrangler? Or the coolest apocalypse vehicle, the Lamborghini LM002.
This week’s episode is all about the prospect of a get-out-of-harm’s-way vehicle. Spurred, of course by recent political unrest in the U.S. And, for the record, ISSIMI’s two Carmudgeons are happy to judge your car based on a multitude of factors, but they’ll never judge you on the color of your skin. Humans are humans.
