In this podcast episode, I was joined by Mark Flynn, the Owner and Founder of the specialised brick, block and masonry subcontractor, Brickit. During this conversation, we talked a little bit about Mark's background, setting up a sub-contracting business, looking for good clients to partner with, and his view of successfully delivering works on a construction site.
Having worked on a couple of Seasons of Channel Nine's The Block, we touched upon those experiences and how over the last few years, he has added layers of reporting and risk management into his business operations to mitigate risk. Talking with Sean Ryan about his career journey into Property Development, and all things Build-to-Rent (BtR)

Got a question about the show? Click here & Send us a text!

In this week's episode, Sean Ryan, the Development Director of Greystar, joined me for a discussion. Greystar is an international multifaceted real estate organisation and one of the largest Build-to-Rent developers in the industry.
During our conversation, Sean shared insights about his career journey, starting with his background in Structural Engineering and how he transitioned into development. He discussed the process of developing his knowledge, expertise, and experience in the field of development and the learnings he gained moving into the property development sector.
Our discussion also delved into the topic of Build-to-Rent as an asset class, and the drivers behind it from a developer's perspective, including planning issues, developing a network to develop projects and understanding the fundamentals.
As an experienced developer within Melbourne, Sean has a deep understanding of the market and the Build-to-Rent asset class. He helped us understand the reasons why BtR has gained traction here in Australia over the last few years and what proportion of the overall housing market it may fulfill in the future.
Our conversation was engaging and informative, and Sean's logical insights were valuable in understanding the current state and future potential of the build-to-rent market.
Amongst other things, in this podcast we discussed:

  • Structural Engineering and stepping into Property Development
  • Typical challenges that you might expect as a developer when you're trying to take a project through planning
  • All things BtR and considerations around amenities within this asset class
  • How the BtR model will play a role in the residential shortage crisis currently hitting Australia

If you work in the built environment, have an interest in property development, transitioning your career from one market sector into other fields of property/development/construction, or have an interest in Melbourne's buildings and the much publicised Build to Rent asset class, then have a listen!

Talking with Sonya Miller about her career, experiences, and thoughts on Melbourne's Construction & Property sector

Got a question about the show? Click here & Send us a text!

In this week's episode, I was joined by Sonya Miller, the Founding Director of Armitage Jones, the Consulting Project Management and Development Firm, and Dynamic Property Group, a boutique property development business.
Sonya and I had a wide-ranging conversation about her experiences in the construction and property industry. We discussed how she progressed into then progressing her career, some of the challenges faced by the industry, managing risk and how it affects the market and approaching the selection of head contractors for a project.
I really enjoyed our conversation and I learned a lot from Sonya's insights into the construction and property industry. I think our listeners will find her insights to be valuable as well.
Here are some of the key takeaways from our conversation:

  • The number of challenges that the construction and property industry is facing, including rising costs, labour shortages, and regulatory changes.
  • The importance of carefully selecting head contractors, as they can have a significant impact on the success of a project.
  • Why a collaborative management style is essential for success in the construction and property industry.
  • The differences between Project management and Development management, the two distinct disciplines, and the importance of understanding them.

Hope you enjoy the podcast!
