Episode 522: Tami Simon - Sounds True
At age 22, Tami Simon started Sounds True with a dream, a tape recorder, and a $50,000 inheritance she received upon the death of her father. Though she had no business experience and only a vague idea of what she wanted the company to be, Tami had her guiding principle strongly in place: to “disseminate spiritual wisdom.” In the early days, Tami began by recording conferences and interviews with teachers like Ram Dass and Stephen Levine. She broadcasted portions of these recordings on a radio show that she hosted on Boulder County Public Radio, and then made the cassettes of the entire recordings available for purchase. She also began to connect with the Boulder music scene by offering cassette duplication service to local artists. Tami hosts a popular weekly podcast called Insights at the Edge, where she has interviewed many of today’s leading teachers. Tami lives with her wife, Julie M. Kramer, and their two spoodles, Raspberry and Bula, in Boulder, Colorado. “When I took my first steps on the spiritual path,” says Tami Simon, “I was looking for answers to life’s greatest mysteries. Over time I learned that the best books and teachers pointed us inward—to our own experience—and that this is where we can find our greatest sense of aliveness and purpose.” Tami is the author of Being True, The Self-Acceptance Project and The Dharma of Dogs. Episode 524: A Little Spark - Children's Book Author Chris Parsons
Two years ago, Chris Parsons left the high-tech business world behind to focus on his true passion and life mission of creating meaningful experiences for children. As a father of two, he felt strongly that by utilizing engaging stories, reading and music, children can be encouraged to “Be That Spark” and do amazing things with their little lives. At a time when it’s more important than ever before for books to motivate children, Parsons was driven to start a movement and thus his debut children’s book, A Little Spark [Zuroam Media, October 1, 2020], was born. Featuring the protagonist Spark, the brave young mouse, a fireless fire-breathing dragon Daniel, a freezing world, and an enemy to conquer, action, fantasy and humor are weaved throughout the story. With displays of kindness, comradery, bravery, forgiveness and even some evil to allow for valuable takeaways, A Little Spark is destined to be a perennial favorite amongst parents and teachers for crucial teachable moments for children primarily ages 7-10 years old. It makes a great family read aloud too. The Children’s Book Review says: “From danger to bravery to equality for all, A Little Spark offers just the right amount of magic and adventure to captivate readers and encourage them to venture out into the world with a spark of their own.” A combination of text, illustrations and music creates a unique experience for parents and children alike as they meet enchanting creatures that individually offer new insights.
