Hey Beach Lovers - I never thought I’d say this but my guest today, Terri Maxwell, just might be more of a beach lover than I am - and that’s saying a lot!

In addition to being a true beach lover, Terri is the founder of Shift/Co a conscious business growth platform TM created BY conscious entrepreneurs FOR conscious entrepreneurs.

If you’ve been listening to the podcast for a while, chances are you’ve heard me mention ShiftCo - numerous times. That’s because, this amazing platform has helped me grow my business - and this podcast - in ways I never thought possible.

So what does all this have to do with The Beach?

When you hear Terri’s story about how the beach pretty much saved her business and her life - I think you’ll get it.

*Subtle Warning:
A small portion of today’s conversation mentions addiction and child abuse - I just wanted to acknowledge that ahead of time, in case some of you are sensitive to those issues, and because, well, I care about you.

=>If you share Terri’s vision for using business as a force for good, and if you're ready to grow a conscious company that can change the world, join the Shift/Co movement.

The Beach Speaks - Ocean Sounds with Christie Pratt

You know those ocean sounds you listen to when you want to relax, meditate, or fall asleep? Have you ever wondered where those sounds were recorded?

Well, Christie Pratt did - and she turned that thought into a podcast that she calls Journey of Relaxation where she just hopped in her car, drove to the Atlantic coast and started recording Ocean sounds!

She began her journey at a beach on the coast of Maine and from there she started traveling south stopping at different beaches along the way to record the Ocean sounds.

When I heard about what she was doing, I thought it would be a really interesting topic to explore - and one you might be interested in, too.

If you want to hear the unique sounds of each beach stop along Christie’s ocean sounds journey, check out her podcast Journey of Relaxation on your favorite podcast app.

The Beach Speaks - Let's Go to Jamaica! with Cathi Taucher

Hey Beach Lovers, how is the beach speaking to you today?

I’m having one of those days where it’s been difficult to do any work. The weather is beautiful, and I can hear the beach - and it’s calling my name!

I’ll admit, I struggle with discipline and consistency - especially with this podcast. And like many creatives, I’d rather be doing the fun, inspiring things - like recording a conversation with a guest- than doing the less than inspiring tasks that you know need to be done like writing show notes, editing the audio, creating social media posts - which I really do enjoy!
But, it takes so much time! When can I go to the beach?

So, what’s a beach lover to do when there’s work to be done, and all you want to do is play?

Well, it seems like Cathi Taucher has that figured out. And in today’s episode, we talk about how she runs a successful travel business while living only a few yards from the beach - on Seven Mile Beach in Negril, Jamaica!

Today, we dive into the topics:

  • What it’s like to live and work in a beach paradise
  • Are people traveling more? Where are they going?
  • The essential things we need to do when planning a beach vacation
  • Why it’s so important to plan leisure time into your schedule- even when you don’t think you have the time - or the money.

**Be sure to listen to the end to hear Cathi’s story about how she met a very attractive man on the beach - and what happened next!

When I think about my 2023 beach bucket list, the ones at the top are on the Gulf Coast - the ones on practically every travel guide’s top 10 Florida beaches, like Caya Costa, Captiva Island, Sanibel, Destin, and Pensacola.
Jensen Beach was not on my bucket list, but when I got a chance to go - even though I had a lot of work on the podcast left to do - how could I say no? When I hear "go to the beach," - I'm on my way!
I spent more time in the hotel room trying to edit and publish an episode, battling a series of tech issues, stressing out over some arbitrary deadline I created for myself - and missing out on precious time on the beach!
The beach was speaking to me - and I wasn’t listening.
I love exploring new beaches (and revisiting old ones) because each one has a different message for me - if I listen. What I don’t know, the beach knows.
How is the beach speaking to you today?

“One cannot collect all the beautiful shells on the beach. One can only collect a few. One moon shell is more impressive than three. There is only one moon in the sky.” ― Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the Sea

It’s hard to think about going to the beach and not wanting to take a little something with you to remember being there. It’s like the shore has this magnetic pull, urging you to pick up a seashell or some other treasure and take it home.

But what if you found out that if you took that little piece of the beach - you would be cursed?

On this episode of The Beach Speaks, my guest, Jenny Paul, and I discuss the joys of collecting shells, sand, and souvenirs at the beach. Jenny shares her experiences collecting sand from various beaches worldwide, including the fascinating pink sand of Bermuda and the black sand of Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii.

We reminisce about her connection to the beach, including childhood memories of losing a water shoe and the recent discovery of a silver dog tag on the beach etched with the words "authentic self." She shares a story of collecting something at the beach that might be cursed, adding an intriguing twist to our conversation. All these experiences lead us to reflect on the profound meaning of the things we find on the beach.

I’m so happy that Jenny agreed to share her story of the cursed sand because, sometimes, a “curse” can actually be a blessing! Although neither of us expected that our conversation would take such an existential turn - it did bring up some interesting questions that I’m sure the beach has been asking me, but I guess I haven’t been paying attention - until now.
Is there a greater meaning to what we find on the beach, and what do we choose to keep and why?

This episode is a must-listen for beach lovers and collectors alike. Share it with your friends!

Let's talk Beach rituals for a minute - do you have any? If so, what makes them so meaningful? Is it healing? Connection? And, how about the "perfect" beach body - what do you think about that?

To explore these ideas, I invited a fellow podcaster and beach lover, Chris Angel Murphy (they/them), to talk about their favorite beach rituals - and, what started as a fun conversation about salt baths, hypnotherapy, and cruising the beaches around Los Angeles, quickly morphed into the topic of having the “perfect" beach body.

Let’s face it, haven’t we all been a little anxious about not having the perfect beach body or felt self-conscious wearing a bathing suit in public, where all your insecurities are laid bare on the beach towel - where everyone can judge those body parts that you prayed would look different.

What if baring your body felt not just uncomfortable, it actually felt - unsafe?

That was Chris Angel’s experience, and even though they said parts of it felt a little embarrassing to tell, I felt like it was a beautiful opportunity to share and honor ourselves - as we are. Their story is, at times, humorous and yet self-affirming and authentic - and that’s what makes them so relatable.

While you might not feel like rushing to the nearest topless beach after listening to this episode, perhaps you’ll feel a little less anxious about being beach body ready the next time you put on that bathing suit and head out for some sun, sand, and surf!

Because, as Chris Angel says: "Everyone is beach body ready."

Do you dream of moving to the beach?

I dreamed of moving to the beach for so long, and now I can open my front door and walk down to the beach every day!
One morning I was sitting on the sand with my eyes closed, tuned in to the sound of the waves, and listening to what the beach had to say about my journey to living at the beach, reminding me of what I had to let go of and what I needed to keep.
How did I get here?
It all started with a piano!

In this episode, I invited Alex Sizemore, a Jacksonville Beach, FL native, to help answer your question: "How do I move to the beach?"
Alex has lived at the beach all his life, and as a realtor, he helps people of all ages and financial situations make their dream of living at the beach come true.

The Beach Speaks - EP 53 The Beach Spoke to Me in a Cat 4 Hurricane!
play

11/04/22 • 17 min

A friend of mine from “up North” asked me what’s it like to be in a hurricane? That got me thinking about my past 22 years living in Florida. How many hurricanes had I been in?

I grew up in the mountains of Pennsylvania. The only “natural disasters” I ever experienced were blizzards - which were fairly common and not all that disastrous. It wasn’t until I moved to Florida that I had ever been in an actual natural disaster - a hurricane.

I had just moved to Orlando when four hurricanes rolled through Florida - one right after the other:

Charlie, Francis, Ivan, and Jeanne.

Don’t you love how hurricanes have “everyday” names?

It makes sense to give hurricanes a name because it makes it really easy to talk about them later, like: “Remember when Andrew came one night and took our roof ?” Or, “Katrina - yeah - she was bad

And, like people, hurricanes have different personalities, are difficult to predict, and you never quite know what they’re going to do.

In this episode, I tell my story of two significant hurricanes in my life (so far): my first, Charley, and my last, Ian.

The hurricanes were roaring, the beach was speaking, and I was listening!

Hey Beach Lovers!
Can you believe 2021 is almost over? How about those New Year's intentions you made way back in January?

For me, my intentions this year tended to ebb and flow like the tides - but I managed to hold steady to one: my “word” for the year which was "connected" and two: beach travel adventure!

For today’s episode, I invited my good friend and luxury travel expert Judi Dunlap to help me “unpack” some magical stories I wanted to share from my recent adventure down the historic California Pacific coast - a trip she so beautifully helped put together for me and my husband.

We talk about the travel mindset, leaving space for surprises (and wow did this trip have some surprises) making connections - with nature, with our spirit, with others, and of course,

The Beach! ⛱
I have to say, after reflecting on this episode, I can really see how my intentions to create connection and beach travel have manifested in such an abundant and meaningful way for me this year. I’m so grateful!

This was just one part of our nearly month-long travel adventure where, after our week beach hopping along the Cali Coast, my soul partner, Ernie, and I spent 12 days exploring all things Costa Rica. I can’t wait to tell you all about the magic we encountered there!
Stay tuned: Part 2 of my Beach Adventure recap: "The Costa Rica Experience" will be coming to your earbuds, soon!

Most of all, I hope this episode has inspired you to create a beach adventure of your own. It’s never too late. . .don’t wait for that elusive “some day” - state your intention, and take at least one step toward your dream - TODAY
