The AM Podcast - A Podcast for Asian American Men

Today's episode is a pre-recorded segment from my weekly Instagram Live Wednesday Whiskey News Recap Show for Asian Menswear. The purpose of the show is to update everyone on all of the news they might've missed. The report is centered around all the great things Asian men are doing in the U.S. and worldwide. Why is this important? It's good to provide real examples of Asian men doing more than just stereotypical things to prove we are more than that. I hope you guys enjoy this new segment.

[Barbershop Talk] - 'Kim's Convenience' TV Show Review *Spoilers* (The Show Touching On Unique Asian Experiences, Simu Liu Playing The Jock, How The Show Ending Abruptly Due To Internal Conflict, and More)

Today's Barbershop Talk podcast reviews the hit sitcom "Kim's Convenience,'" starring Marvel's next superhero Simu Liu in "Shang-Chi: The Legend of The Ten Rings." “Kim’s Convenience,” a CBC Television sitcom based on a play of the same name about a Korean Canadian family who owns a convenience store in Toronto.

We talk about the good, the bad, the ugly and give our rating out of 10.

In this episode, we discuss:

- How Paul Lee (Appa) denied his heritage growing up

-Being able to see a multitude of Asian characters

-Kim’s Convenience touching on many Asian experiences that we resonate with

-Asian culture reinforces the idea that we shouldn’t talk about our feelings and keep them inside.

-Leo talks about his favorite episode where they showed us the differences between Korean-born vs. an American-born person

-Mike and Leo provides critical feedback on the show

-The main characters didn’t develop as much besides Kimchee. Everyone pretty much stayed stagnant, and the last season didn’t seem congruent with the entire show

-Why the production company decided to pull the plug on Kim Convenience

-Leo talks about the season-ending episode

-The backlash after Kim Convenience was canceled

-Was the cancellation justified?

-We give our rating out of 10

Living Your Life for You, Not For What Others Expect Of You (Dealing With A Physically Abusive Father, Family Expectation To Become A Doctor, and More) Ft. | Jay Lee (Krav Maga Instructor/Founder of Korean Tiger Studios) | SPOTLIGHT

For today's Spotlight Episode, I'm excited to welcome Jay Lee to the show. He's a Krava Maga and Muy Thai Instructor and the founder of Korean Tiger Studios, where he provides coaching and training on martial arts and defense techniques.
Jay's inspiring journey into martial arts was born out of necessity. Being bullied in high school for being the only Asian kid in school to dealing with an abusive father at home, Jay found himself taking matters into his own hands when defending himself.
To make matters worse, Jay comes from a distinguished family with over 35 physicians who expected him to not only follow in their footsteps but inherit three family practices once he finished medical school. From the outside looking in, Jay had the golden ticket. All he had to do was follow the plan, however, Jay knew deep down inside this life wasn't for him. Ultimately, Jay had to make the difficult decision to either live a life expected of him or live his life the way he wants.

In this episode, we discuss:

Learning how to fight out of necessity

Having an abusive father who was an ex-marine in South Korea (getting drop kicked, father using weapons against him)

Having an abusive father who was an ex-marine in South Korea

Being in a family with over 35 physicians who expected him to follow in their footstep

Becoming the first Krav Maga certified Korean American

Family cutting him off after he made the decision not to pursue a career in the medical career

Having a chip on his shoulders

His thoughts on Asian Hate as someone who teaches self-defense for a living

Men should be able to protect their families

Sharing his best piece of advice

Where he envisions himself in the next five years.
