7th Alternate Oscars - 1934 ft. Chris Makas
The Alternate Oscars
07/07/21 • 98 min
1934 - the year a single movie defined an entire genre! Categorically Oscars co-host Chris Makas was gracious enough to join me as we discussed the films of 1934, a truly stellar year, from the beauty of The Scarlet Empress, to how Frank Capra essentially saved the Academy, to the Bette Davis controversy, to how the Academy passed over so many classics for disposable trash in terms of what they actually nominated.

2nd Alternate Oscars - 1929 ft. Jackson DeStefano
The Alternate Oscars
05/29/21 • 97 min
What a year to be talking about! Jackson DeStefano joins me as we take out the trash of 1929, and reward the few good movies that were released that year and eligible for the Oscars. Besides our awards, we mostly discussed the struggle of transitioning to sound that plagued 1929, and Jackson briefly mentioned his thoughts on Gary Cooper and Walter Huston, as well as the technical marvels and importance of Hallelujah being undermined by its abhorrent racism. And we both agreed on the greatness of Lucky Star, not to spoil anything. And I didn't even remember to mention Paul Fejos' narratively messy technical marvel Broadway! Oh, and beware of the gaffe Jackson and I made in forgetting to announce our winners, which we quickly corrected. Anyways, cheers and enjoy!

The Alternate Oscars
06/21/21 • 56 min
This week, Ben Miller and I are discussing the movies of 1932! In less than an hour, we covered a lot of ground, including Ben's appreciation of Lady and Gent, the considerable technological leaps the film industry made, behind-the-scenes hijinks, and the enduring legacy of Fredric March.

Bonus Episode: Sparkle (2012) ft. Dawn Lee
The Alternate Oscars
06/11/21 • 41 min
Because it is Black Music Month, Dawn Lee and I joined forces to discuss one of her favorite films, 2012's Sparkle, a remake of the 1976 cult classic. We touched on her history with the movie, how it improves upon the original our experiences with Whitney Houston, and whether she was Oscar worthy in the movie.

6th Alternate Oscars - 1933 ft. Emily Blakowski
The Alternate Oscars
06/29/21 • 133 min
The lovely Emily Blakowski and I had a blast discussing the films of 1933! There was a lot to dissect, from how Emily identified Warner Baxter's character in 42nd Street to one of her theater teachers, the genius of remake-worthy Design for Living, the endurance of the Little Women novel, and so much more!
Apologies in advance for audio issues and background noise: I had my AC on full blast and I didn't realize that having my mic on cut off Emily's audio.

For the latest episode, Kieran B has joined me to discuss the movies of 1935. This was a fun year to unfold as we discussed early Hitchcock, The true debate of The Informer vs. Mutiny on the Bounty, the boycotts the Academy faced, Bette Davis' consolation Oscar, Kieran's unexpected appreciation for Dangerous, and the crazy write-in votes!
