The Adam Experiment - The Inner Circle Effect with Thomas Kriese
play

03/25/24 • 52 min

Episode Summary:
Have you ever felt stuck in your professional or personal life? In this episode, Adam sits down with author Thomas Kriese to discuss his book, "The Inner Circle Effect," and explore the power of surrounding yourself with the right people to unlock your full potential. Discover how to identify and cultivate the five essential archetypes you need in your inner circle to break free from stagnation and achieve your goals. Join us for an insightful conversation that will transform how you approach your relationships and personal growth.
Key Topics and Takeaways:
00:01:58 - Thomas shares his inspiration for writing "The Inner Circle Effect" and how feeling stuck led him to realize the importance of being intentional about the people you surround yourself with.

00:03:16 - Defining the difference between the inner circle (the people around you) and the inner circle effect (the impact those people have on your opportunities and circumstances).

00:05:22 - Thomas describes the feeling of being stuck in a valley between two peaks - the potential and energy to make things happen but not knowing where to focus it.

00:09:03 - The importance of taking action instead of just acquiring knowledge and the role of a "motivator" in pushing you out of your comfort zone.

00:13:10 - Identifying the archetypes in Thomas' inner circle, including his challenger, supporter, and mentors.

00:16:07 - Discussing the different types of networks (conveners, expansionists, and brokers) and how they impact the size and strength of your inner circle.

00:22:56 - Navigating the challenge of detaching from people who no longer serve your growth without immediately replacing them.

00:37:14 - Taking agency over your own happiness and plugging the holes in your cup before seeking external validation or support.

00:42:46 - How your inner circle seeps into your subconsciousness through the concept of mimetic desire, influencing your behaviors and choices.
The Experiment:
Reach out to your oldest and coldest connection, someone you haven't spoken to in at least half your life. Reignite that connection with a simple, heartfelt message expressing your appreciation for the memories you shared. Notice the psychological uplift it brings to both you and the recipient, and explore how reconnecting with weak ties can expand your network and open new opportunities.

Have you ever felt stuck or overwhelmed with "buts" when trying to start something new? In this Short, Adam shares his personal experience of getting trapped in spiraling thoughts that prevented him from launching his podcast and making progress on other goals. He outlines a 7-step process he uses to break free from analysis paralysis and perfectionism:

Key Topics:

  • Recognizing the thoughts and patterns that lead to inaction ("buts", "shoulds", overcomplicating)
  • Raising mental awareness of those thought loops
  • Tuning into the physical sensations in your body
  • Naming what's happening without judgment
  • Pausing to create a pattern interrupt
  • Getting curious about the fears and limiting beliefs driving the spiral
  • Reconnecting to your deeper "why" and what truly matters
  • Taking empowered action aligned with your priorities

Adam shares how simply hearing a song at the right time allowed him to give himself permission just to start and figure it out, rather than get bogged down in putting out a "perfect" launch.

He emphasizes that while simple, this process takes practice. But by building the muscle, you can spend more time moving forward on what you care about, rather than stuck in paralysis. Adam's insights provide a practical framework for overcoming crippling overthinking.
