Radio Gizmo: Brynn, Aaron & Barry

1 Creator

The podcast about failed or forgotten sitcoms from the 80s and 90s. Many sitcoms have stood the test of time and have millions of adoring fans—but those shows were diamonds in the rough. This podcast is not about those diamonds, it's about the rough. Some sitcoms were briefly popular in their time, some were cancelled almost immediately. You probably won't recognize most of these, and you'll say 'that was a show?' Hosted by Brynn Byrne, Aaron Yeger, and Andrew "Barry" Helmer. A Radio Gizmo Production. Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place was the 1998 sitcom about Gen-X career and relationship angst. It featured Ryan Reynolds as Berg (Guy 1), Richard Ruccolo as Pete (Guy 2) and Traylor Howard as Sharon (a Girl). They hang out at Beacon Street Pizza in Boston (a Pizza Place) where the Guys work. After season two, the pizza place is dropped from both the story world and the title, and it becomes Two Guys and a Girl—a title that is both preposterously generic and numerically inaccurate, as another Guy as well as another Girl are added to the main cast. Whatever...the point is this slightly younger, slightly edgier version of Friends is best known for helping launch the career of superhero/gin/football tycoon Ryan Reynolds. These two guys and a girl (Barry, Aaron and Brynn) grab a few slices and give it a taste.

Jennifer Slept Here WAS a show. These are the actual lyrics to the theme song:

“I just saw the most beautiful ghost in the world—she slept here. I just saw the most outrageous kind of a girl—she lived here. Jennifer, whatchu doin’ to me? In and out of my life you appear. They say the stars don’t shine as bright since you left here. Jennifer slept here; she lived here; she loved here; laughed here and wept here—she slept here. And she never really left here—Jennifer slept here!”

Brynn, Aaron & Barry hold a séance to find out why the ghost of a Hollywood starlet is hanging out with a 14 year old boy.

That Was a Show? - Vinnie & Bobby - aka Matt LeBlanc’s Joey Before Joey
play

06/17/21 • 78 min

Vinnie & Bobby WAS a show. Buried deep within the filthy bowels of Married With Children was a backdoor pilot for a show called Top Of The Heap starring Matt LeBlanc. It lasted seven episodes. But because everyone else was wrong, another attempt was made featuring the same character, Vinnie Verducci, and thus Vinnie & Bobby was born. It also lasted seven episodes.

Brynn, Aaron & Barry attempt to piece this all together—and while they’re at it they pick apart the latest major act of 90s nostalgia about that obscure show where Matt LeBlanc really took off...the Friends Reunion! Welcome back to Season 2 of That Was a Show?

Not My Department WAS a show. This 1987 satire was produced by the CBC and takes on government bureaucracy in Ottawa. The show centres around the fictional Department of Regional Incentive Targets, or DRIT. Quelle idée amusante! That Was a Show? takes a drive north of the border to review a Canadian sitcom for the very first time. Brynn, Aaron & Barry fill out the appropriate access to information request forms, and politely ask why this show didn’t get reelected after its first term in office.

1989 saw the release of one of the most memorable cinematic comedies of all time, the John Hughes classic Uncle Buck starring the incomparable John Candy and Macaulay Culkin. A mere one year later, a sitcom version was released featuring practically none of the original cast. The replacements try their darnedest to replicate the unique charm of the film, which is of course the story of three kids left in the care of their rough-around-the-edges uncle Buck Russell whilst their parents leave town to attend to a family emergency. The show has a premise that has been modified in dark and strange ways to suit the format of an ongoing series. Brynn, Aaron and Barry light up cigars, hop in the old ‘77 Mercury and try to figure out why this version of the heartwarming family story backfired. (Fans of the movie will get that reference!)

The Golden Palace WAS a show. It was a spinoff of The Golden Girls—but subtract Bea Arthur, and add Don Cheadle and Cheech Marin. They sell their house and buy a hotel in Miami. Why do they come out of retirement to take on this much risk and hard work? Why does Sophia want to run a commercial kitchen and bus tables at 87? We decided to put on some pastel leisurewear and investigate. Featuring guest Samantha MacAdam!

One Of The Boys WAS a show. What do you get when you bring together Dana Carvey in his first starring role, Nathan Lane in his first starring role, music and acting icon Scatman Crothers, and cap it off with the vaudeville stylings of Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney? Turns out not a lot. This 1982 sitcom is about an energetic senior who ditches the nursing home (where he inexplicably lives because he’s in terrific shape) to move in with his college student grandson and roommate. This show even features appearances from the likes of Olympia Dukakis, and Meg Ryan in her second role ever. Brynn, Aaron, Barry, and special guest co-host, Neal E. Fischer of the podcast Triviality, try to figure out why this show got pulled offstage by that giant cane.

Ferris Bueller WAS a show. The iconic John Hughes classic about high school rebellion from 1986 was reimagined as a sitcom in 1990. Matthew Broderick was replaced by Charlie Schlatter who, much like the Ferris of the film, often breaks the 4th wall to address the audience—only this Ferris is also explicitly aware of the existence of the film, for which he has an apparent disdain. This show also features Jennifer Aniston in her 2nd time at bat. Join Brynn, Aaron, Barry, and special guest Simone Smith who chose this show—looking into the camera—as we cut class and go on an adventure to see why this one got expelled.

play

05/06/21 • 63 min

Brynn, Aaron & Barry look back at a full 90s-sitcom-season worth of podcast episodes. The hosts watch another episode of a show they reviewed early on to see how it compares; they present the first annual TWASies Awards to some of the most deserving shows, characters and actors; they answer a listener question; and they reflect on the origin story of That Was a Show? and how far they’ve come! And inspired by classic sitcoms, there’s even a clipshow!
