The best podcasts for relieving stress and having a laugh!

Who am I?

I'm a filmmaker and storyteller in many different formats, passionate about both fiction and documentary. I listen to podcasts to stay informed and to be entertained, and I listen while eating breakfast, running, driving, and relaxing after work. The three of us who co-host our podcast "That Was a Show?" were born in the 80s and grew up in the 90s. We watched a lot of TV in our youth (and still do) and we also all studied media and filmmaking and have worked in creative fields as writers, producers and directors. So we appreciate and understand television from both sides of the screen.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Our podcast "That Was a Show?" is about failed or forgotten sitcoms from the 80's and 90's. We take the process of reviewing the shows in detail quite earnestly and seriously, but our conversations are very fun, silly and spontaneous.

What is my podcast playlist about?

I've been listening to podcasts for a very long time. There are many different types of shows I listen to and for many reasons, but the most important discovery I made is that I was able to take up long distance semi-competitive running by listening to podcasts. These are podcasts I've listened to while running to relieve anxiety and stay motivated to keep going.

The podcasts I picked and why

1. Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend

Why this podcast?

This podcast is very, very funny and I actually cannot get enough of it. If they produced five times as many episodes I would listen five times as often. The interviews with guests are more down to earth and sincere conversations than what you come to expect from the talk show promotional circuit. The dynamic between Conan, Sona and Matt is the kind of comfortable hangout experience that is the reason why traditional sitcoms were always so re-watchable. It doesn't matter what they're talking about, you just want to hang out with them.

After 25 years at the Late Night desk, Conan realized that the only people at his holiday party are the men and women who work for him. Over the years and despite thousands of interviews, Conan has never made a real and lasting friendship with any of his celebrity guests. So, he started a podcast to do just that. Deeper, unboundedly playful, and free from FCC regulations, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend is a weekly opportunity for Conan to hang out with the people he enjoys most and perhaps find some real friendship along the way.

2. How Did This Get Made?

Why this podcast?

One of the OG podcasts to popularize the format and a bit of an inspiration for me. Paul, June and Jason are a lot of fun to hang out with because you can tell that they're friends in real life and this is the way they'd talk to each other ever if there were no microphones around to capture it. The movies they review are absolutely ridiculous, and you don't need to watch the movie to find the discussion entertaining. I've seen the show live on tour and it's even better.

The award-winning comedy podcast that celebrates bad movies. Comedians and actors Paul Scheer (The League), June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie), and Jason Mantzoukas (Big Mouth) break down the very best of the worst films ever made—we’re talkin’ blockbuster flops, cheesy 80s action movies, Lifetime thrillers, obscure cult classics, and if we’re honest... most Nic Cage and Jason Statham movies. Plus, sometimes they’re even joined by hilarious guests like Seth Rogen, Conan O’Brien, Amy Schumer, Nicole Byer, Nick Kroll, and Charlize Theron. And the best part? They watch these bad movies so you don’t have to! New episodes every Friday. Classic episodes re-released every Monday.

4. WTF with Marc Maron Podcast

Why this podcast?

This is quite possibly the first podcast I ever listened to and one of the longest running podcasts of all time. Marc Maron has interviewed so many people in show business over the years, and hosts conversations that tend to be deeper and weightier than what you'll hear anywhere else. He gets very personal with his subjects, and speaks a lot about his own personal life and struggles with addiction and mental health. Even though Marc is a comedian, and so are many of his guests, this podcast is the most serious on the list. That said, there's a gentle and sincere approach to the conversations that feels almost like a meditation.

5. Handsome

Why this podcast?

Three comedic geniuses hanging out together. Tig, Fortune and Mae would each on their own be hilarious if they were just reading a phone book. This is probably the newest podcast on the list and another recent discovery. I look forward to listening to more of these meandering and silly conversations.

"Handsome" is a podcast from comedians Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster, and Mae Martin. Every week, the handsome hosts field a question from a friend and attempt to answer it together, covering every subject you could think of. Along the way, Tig, Fortune and Mae tell plenty of stories and just generally have a ridiculous time.
